Agreed. If Nathan decides to terminate his own contract (quits), then he also terminates his pay cheque ... like any other job.

I don't think its all bad if Nathan is taking a year off or flat out retiring ... I'd be keen to see a bit more of Tom Hawkins this season anyway.

You said that because Nathan Ablett was on the list after the cut off for delistings he did this to get his pay cheque for the year.

Ben Cousins has everything to do with it - he was not delisted before the cut off for delistings. Meaning he was in exactly the same position as Nathan Ablett re: time of delisitng (if they delist him). West Coast aren't paying Ben Cousins for 2008 so what makes you think that Geelong would pay Nathan Ablett. Just because you are on a clubs list at the cut off date does not mean you have to pay them.

Monetary compensation for not wanting to fufil a contract to play at age 22? Why? The only thing I could see happening is that his contract is amended to a minimum one if they decide to give him a year off so they don't have to redraft him but even that seems unlikely.

Ben Cousins was delisted. He wasnt delisted at the first cut offs as the AFL didnt allow it but was delisted in the final cut offs. We were then allowed to use a PSD pick to replace Cousins on our list.

Nathan Ablett walked of the job a few days after the final delisting cut offs. All a bit convenient. Fact is Cousins aint on a AFL list. Nathan Ablett still is. Situations are not the same. If Nathan Ablett was a upfront truthfrul and respectable bloke he would of called it quits before the final delistings could be made so Todd Grima could get a chance rather then have him playing in the SANFL with his AFL dream over while Nablett receives a paycheque for doing nothing

Id love to know if Nathan Ablett will forfeit his pay. I seriously doubt he will

Would be a great ploy to grab alot of attention for a new sponsor. :p
Can't really see it being a new major sponsor.

We already have Ford as the major sponsor on our jumper and NIB as a joint major sponsor on our shorts, with Skilled still having the naming rights to KP. Any other sponsor isn't really all that major then.

I think it's definitely Nath related. Just can't make up my mind whether it's going to be a staying or going announcement.

Nathan Ablett won't be paid, but his contract will still show in the TPP.
Ablett has breached the conditions of his contract, he's ended it and unless the club has agreed to a settlement (unlikely) then he won't receive anything from today forward.

However, the money that was to be paid to Nathan Ablett cannot be paid to another player.

You still receive payments. Geelong cant terminate his contract. He wont receive the 100k but he gets paid a certain amount per week seperate. Similar to injury payments.

Depending on what he does. If he takes a year off ... then he's more likely still get paid. But if he retires he terminates/breaches his own contract and would not get paid!

A TPP is a salary cap figure that isn't necessarily what you pay a player. Nathan Ablett will still be under salary cap but won't neccessarily be paid.

Its very simple, Nathan Ablett will breach the terms of his contract. He will not provide the service for which he is paid for. He does not have to be paid. He is effectively failing to turn up for the rest of his contract - it has nothing to do with injury payments.

Geelong and Nathan Ablett can terminate his contract jointly. Geelong can't sacl but jointly they can cancel or vary a contract no different to WCE varying Ben Cousin's contract last year. Of course it can be done with mutual consent but that doesn't mean it effects salary cap.

If Nathan resigns, then HE terminates the contract. You can't enforce the payment components of a contract if you don't fulfil it's terms. Ludicrous suggestion.

I'd suspect Longy's right in saying that the money set aside can't go to other players though.

When Glen Jakovich retired mid season he still got paid a weekly wage in a similar vein to that of what a injured player would earn. You get X amount per game aslong with the base wage. Nablett would forfeit the base wage but will still receive the X amount. If he takes a year off he will still get paid as big schnitzel said.

Can we get back to the important discussion on this thread - how Nathan was about to become one of the greatest CHF of all time because he was really good at training. Forget Carey, Brown, Hart, Brereton etc. They might be able to turn it on out there on a footy field but Nathan Ablett could carve up where it counts - on the training track against his own team mates.

Was he getting paid as an act of Goodwill? Geelong doesn't have to pay him.

Under your idea, all players would sign for another year just so they could get paid out then retire early season. Do they do it? No because clubs aren't obliged to pay you.

Augie, i don't think that was the essence of this thread but i stick by my statement. The kid is a freak and i'm guessing you have no idea what you are talking about.

I'm not saying he would be as good as Carey, Brown etc, but he definitely has the potential. You have to remember he did not come through the traditional U18 TAC comp and so was already behind in his development.

To have any currency when talking about Nathan, you have to understand teh type of person he is. If the fire was there to play top flight footy then watch out because he could have been great.

The fact that he was competing exceptionally well against Scarlett and Harley means a fair bit. The backs were trying, don't worry about that! Pretty handy backmen too......

Jako said quote they were "contractually obliged" to pay him regardless

surely they dont have to pay him. Yes he has a contract but that contract is for him to play footy. If he refuses to play he cant get the money .

I mean if Judd quit playing tomorrow to go to hollywood and become an actor do Carlton have to pay him $6million over the next five years? that seems very unlikely.

Nathan Ablett has walked away according to SEN. Option to com back left open, not officially retired, having at least a year off.

Ron Burke from 3AW at Skilled Stadium just reported on the Dennis Walter program that Nathan Ablett has decided to retire due to loosing the passion for the game. Possible he may play VFL at a later date. Very brief statement

I don't think it is a breach. I believe the CBA states something along the lines of if a player retires they get paid off in full for the term of their contract. Which may be a reason why he announced this after the cut-off. If he did it before the cut-off, his salary for next year would come under this year's cap, pushing us over the line in terms of salary cap. Which is the same reason Voss was listed this year.

Geelong should not welcome him back, if he changes his mind.
Millions of young kids would sell their left nut to play AFL footy

So in other words hes getting paid. Jackpot.

Hes getting paid 100+ to go on a tour of Europe. Good work if you can get it. I wonder if anyone in the media will be gutsy enough to ask this question.

Will you forfeit your pay Nathan? Give it to charity maybe.

I've watched him play in a competetive game and he is average at best. To say that he would have been great if he had the fire to play is like me saying I would have been great if I wasn't so slow or had that lack of ability problem.

I understand it is disappointing for you that he has retired but it is just silly to start overrating players just because they have left the game. Shoulda coulda woulda is pointless.
