Three quarter time summary/thoughts - noting that I believe 4th quarter might get weird with match-sim setups and scenarios, and a few key players being rotated out;

Forward Line
  • It's very obvious that Collingwood's best tall defenders aren't playing, because Larkey is clearly a class above their backups. Dancing circles around them and is probably our BOG.
  • Paul Curtis and Jaidyn Stephenson appear to have really developed a strong rapport because they're not running into each others space or trying to crumb the same packs. Both of them really showed a good amount of effort and forward pressure stuff too.
  • Still lots of room for improvement about keeping the footy once it enters our forward 50 and hits the ground, but there's promising signs.
  • Jy Simpkin playing a dedicated half-forward type role might take some time to really pay dividends, but early indications are that it's a good plan. But also makes it hard to see how a guy like Duursma cracks the best 22.
  • Zurhaar looks good. Contract year.
Midfield
  • Will Phillips came on and was an obvious direct swap for George Wardlaw (who is finished for the day). Looked great. His inside 50 kicks are beautiful. I hope he plays every game for us this year.
  • Xerri has done well as the game has gone on. Started the game a bit rusty but has looked better and better as it's gone on. Doesn't offer as much as Goldy did around the ground, but we were spoiled in that regard.
  • Dylan Stephens looks like he'll be best 22 for us, but it has to be noted that Stephens, Fisher, and Bailey Scott all play essentially the exact same role and I don't think there's space for all 3 in our best 22. So will be interesting to see what happens there (Bailey Scott isn't playing today).
  • Sheezel (who is playing both in defense and in midfield a bit) is elite. He just makes me laugh with how easy the game looks for him.
Defense
  • Toby Pink and Biggy Nyuon have also gotten better the longer the game has gone on.
  • Pink especially had a couple of good plays, including a really good intercept mark that completely nullified what was looking like a Collingwood goal. The kid has really strong defensive instincts.
  • McKercher is taking the kick-outs and playing that same role we saw Sheezel play to start last year. Looks really good. Gets a lot of the pill.
  • We still badly need a solid small/medium defender. Collingwood has this in Isaac Quaynor, and we don't.
Overall the thing that has impressed/excited me most in the game so far has been our speed. We've played fast and taken some chances and it's paying off. Skills have been good, if not still a little inconsistent.

Powell and Laz feel like new recruits to be honest. Both were written off by most last season. Great to see.

I still think if we're at full strength, it's difficult to fit both of them into our best 22.

But this is a nice problem to have.

From what I've seen today, I'll be bitterly disappointed if we only win 3 or 4 games again this season. There have been some gorgeous moments of play from our kids that excites me for the future but also gives me a lot of hope for this season that we won't be the easy beats we have been the last four seasons.
