Haven't seen much in here on Hunter Clark. Anyone able to help me out on how he was?

Disappointing, unfortunately. Albeit against a very good opposition.

Played in the guts and was a regular at center bounces but rarely got involved.

Some poster here went back to work out his stats and said he had 8 touches in the first 4 periods.

He did get involved a bit more in the 5th period when Melbourne rested all their star players.

He still just looks unfit.

I get it's the first practice match, but he looked gassed 5min into the game and his poor disposal would indicate that.

I understand he's not the best runner and that's fine. But to be 6 years into a career and still have poor fitness is pretty embarrasing.

It's either that or just plain laziness, because he's a massive liability on the defensive spread and having 1 weak link in a zone defines is all you need to be leaking goals.

Im hoping these practice games and the first few rounds will just be blowouts and he'll be better come round 3-4.

I never watched or listened to the game , but I wouldnt look to much into the defense knowing heard he had Howard , Cordy playing forward at time and Paton on a wing.

Lyon would be checking what players can do in other positions, but Knowing the defense side of Lyons game I expect it to be the least of our problems.

I feel Josh Battle could be a standout for us this year , he has the ability to be a star down back since he has been settled in one postion and at 24yrs of age could really have a outstanding year.

Having Sinclair who has turned into a All Australian star across have back and the consistent Wilkie having Battle step up will really take us forward.
I also think Howard will hold his own against the big forwards so we are in good shape.

Midfield is the area we have to improve to get us up to the top end of the ladder.
The midfield has been our achilles for a number of years now and never gets above workman-like at best. We won't be getting up that top and of the ladder until we get more class in there, and looking at the praccy match last week, I don't see a lot of change about to happen.

Don't agree. Our biggest issue has been the drop in standard when our main mids need a rest. Level that out and we can improve significantly.

If Windy and Owens do make the step up and become 20+ possessions a game players who can run through the midfield and still pose a significant forward threat then a lot of change can happen very quickly.

Steele comes of the ball and goes forward - in comes Owens/Windy.

The biggest one we'll miss is Jones for his genuine speed out of stoppages. Ideally if he gets fit he should never have to win a contested ball again - sit him and Gresh on the outside and let Steele, Windy Crouch, Owens deal with the grunt work.

A few too many ifs and buts. We expect more from some players than they will deliver. Jones has good run, but he won't be the Jones of 2020 and is injury-prone now as time goes on, same scenario for Gresh. Owens looks nothing like a midfielder to me, but Windy a good chance. Crouch is the only one in that lot who could hit a target by foot over 40 mts, and the rest a up and under sideways kickers and bombs by foot. Steel now should be played mostly in the forward half as a strong defensive forward who can take a good mark for his size against taller opposition.

Look at a blue chip mid like LDU. Pick 3 or 4 and physically ready from day 1. It still took him 5 years to properly arrive.

Windy, Owens and Pou need to play every game in the next 3-4 years to be hitting their straps when RTB's contract is up. It's a big ask.

This is mildly interesting, someone recorded stats for 4 of the practice matches and converted to fantasy points and Steele had the second most. Pretty much the whole Melbourne midfield only an inch behind lol.

We did play 7 quarters

Windhager, Phillipou, Owens will take time.
It won't be sudden.

And slow inaccurate ball movement. Our forward line was one dimensional and delivery was poo. Ratts had a controlled ball movement game plan without players capable of safe disposal and then had the most predictable delivery inside 50 of any side.

Our side mids went well last year but once we got it outside we struggled. Our bad patches were when Steele and Grehsam went out injured and no-one was fit to cover for them.

As long as we don't end up having to use Owens as a makeshift tall forward/second ruck, he would rotate through the midfield/forward option along with Steele and Windy.

Very formidable grouping and as I said if both the youngsters come on as expected then we will lose very little as they rotate.

As for Zac Jones - once he rejoined the club after his break at the start of the year he played 13 of a possible 15 games.

As for midfield disposal efficiency - all I've got to say is I'd hate to be a leading forward if any of Dangerfield, Oliver and Petracca had the ball.
