Opinion Matthew Nicks: Adelaide's Coach (Part 2) - Full Support of the Board

Is Matthew Nicks the right coach for Adelaide?

  • Firmly yes (I love what I'm seeing)

  • Leaning yes

  • Can't decide either way

  • Leaning no (but don't sack him yet)

  • Firmly no (he should be sacked)

I saw Silvers actually brought out the Hardwick comparison for Nicks.

He does realise they actually won 15 games in 2013 and 2015 right?

What a joke.
Clubs always damage control for coaches until they're sacked.

He'd know with a tiny bit of research that's its a dumb comparison.

The problem with the narrative of a rebuild was that it was never a rebuild. I'm not sure how we sold it as such but maybe the club initially used the term in association with Nicks rebuilding the culture. Someone in the media started talking rebuild and the narrative just grew. But its an out and out lie.

Nicks first game in charge

I dont see any intention of rebuilding that side. 9 of those players 90 games later still play. Would have been 10 had Sloane not retired with injury.

Of our entire 2020 squad, 20 listed players remain on our 2024 list (including Sloane).

Port Adelaide - have just 18 players remaining from their 2020 list.
Collingwood - have just 13 players from their 2020 list.

There is literally zero excuse for us being in our current position. Yes we have injuries but our depth should have well and truly been there by now. And then we have the club treating us like we are stupid and then happy clappers coming on here refusing to lay blame where it belongs, on Nicks.

Send this to Rowey, let's keep him angry!

The Matthew Nicks fan club has reached the stage where Wayne has been asked to turn the light off if/when he decides to leave as he's the last one left.
had me wonder if I was going crazy by thinking this was the second time you'd dropped this bomb... 👀

The only silver lining from the ceo interview was he mentioned a core group of players that most of us would highly rate and didn’t mention any of the scrubs as part of this. These were mostly up and comers like soligo TT and Rachele. This gives some hope that given the current pressure they may begin to try some youngsters and piss off some of the honest tyers that coach loves since they aren’t getting it done. Two debacles in a row has helped to turn media sentiment against those in charge, which helps this process. I imagine at least some one in development / recruit will be made accountable at the end of the year. They are in a position that the media will keep calling for an external review. they’ll reluctantly do it and sacrifice a few scape goats- but not all responsible. But as long as they see that they have to focus on building on that core then we can at least salvage something from this season. At this point it’s the only way they can hope to keep the pressure on them at bay since plan A clearly isn’t working and the local media finally started to grow a pair.

Unbelievable that 4 of our list management committee are Roo, Silvers, Kelly and the CFO. Not exactly a sharp group.
Nothing wrong with those roles being involved. CFO has to be there to manage salary cap. The big issue is that the GM football is not a football person.

Crowds need to completely drop off. Lets see them defend the club if 10k start turning up. These pricks must be punished in the back pocket, it's the only thing they care about. Supporters are an inconvenience for them, they only care that they keep blindly spending. Roo demonstrated what they think of supporters.

They’re clutching at straws. They locked themselves in and need to excuse their decision making. Wagons have been circled dnd fingers are crossed this year is an aberration. There’s no way they embarrass themselves further by doing anything this year.

Manage salary cap, you’re kidding right? It’s an 8 column x 45 row spreadsheet with the simplest of add/subtract formulae. If Kelly, Reid or Silvers can’t enter the data being discussed on that spreadsheet then they all need to go.

I would have thought the List Manager is there to manage the salary cap as part of their job? Hence why player managers and in St Kilda's case, a banker, get those roles. It's about negotiating deals and managing the cap.

Exactly and the cap is a hard number, no need to have the CFO reviewing other financial departments to see if player salary can be handled. The full cap (and soft cap) should already be budgeted, so LM only needs to work to the number provided by the AFL. Making decisions on talent/value is difficult, logging and managing it on a spreadsheet is exceedingly simple.

And how many of those players on that list were there after 2020 ;) Had we cut the same amount end of 2019 and 2020 then we wouldn't have been able to fill an AFL side lol. How do you think we went from one of the oldest to one of the youngster list in the span of 2 years??? We decide to do a full list rebuild after the CM debacle and it was the right choice.

The Crows are never getting 10k to a game, worst case would be high 20s going by our history. Even Port didn’t go that low during the Primus years.

The percentage of people in any supporter base passionate enough to boycott a game would be very very low.
Still, something approaching a half empty Adelaide Oval (25,000 - 30,000) is an ugly look and something even the AFL can't ignore or tolerate. The SMA would be hurting from the rivers of cash from game day customers drying up too.

Oh yeah of course, but I’m not sure we will even see a drop to those levels tbh. Sydney on Saturday night will be a good crowd as a couple of our stars are back and Sydney are good to watch. Maybe the Giants or Saints could see drop offs, but are in good timeslots and at worst probably see 35k still.

Only 37,000 for last Thursday for what should have been a prime time game (with the local SA freeze novelty) would have been a bit of a shock, but that will be discounted due to the long weekend factor.

I'm still expecting a good turnout for the Sydney game. But the GWS game (with their 7 person traveling cheersquad) and Saints game (potential Ross Lyon defensive snoozefest) will be telling, especially if Sydney and Brisbane belt us the previous two weeks.

Richmond have sucked this year, I don't think a crowd of 37k was particularly unusual with a long weekend coming up.

I think 35k will be the max we get to home games for the rest of the year excluding a showdown. I dont know why people keep turning up to see us finish 15th along with financially supporting the arrogant clowns running the joint. If supporters are happy turning up to see us lose they are easily satisfied. I'll show some interest when they get serious and clear out the incompetent clowns who have a long history of failure and only care about keeping their snout in the trough.

I can only see us winning at most 3 games for the remainder of the season. Home against Hawks and Saints. And we'll jag another one. Expecting Port to spank us in their showdown.

That's a 7 win season, equal 2nd worst in our history. Only worse one was 2020 (Nicks). Equal with 2021 (Nicks) and 2011 (Craig - sacked).

Next worst was 8 wins in 2022 (also Nicks), 2004 (Ayres - sacked), 1999 (Blight - left) & 1996 (Shaw - sacked)

You see where I'm going with this ...

Sorry George, been busy

There's a prediction COLL could miss the 8 this year, after a Premiership last year ....due to their injury list
Should Macrae come under scrutiny for poor performance .....shouldn't COLL's list be better than the Crows ?

I've already answered your question, in the multitude of posts above ....a Coach is judged on their ability to maximise performance of the list ....and the list management quality is judged by the footy dept / CEO ....factoring in the health of the squad

That's always been the case, and will continue to be so ......people like Rowe, are buffoons catering to their audience .....and I bet everyone tuned in to hear & cheer all the negativity
Oh Wayne, Collingwood not a good example, equal fourth just out on percentage after starting the season in party mode….
