Opinion Matthew Nicks: Adelaide's Coach

Is Matthew Nicks the right coach for Adelaide's rebuild?

  • Firmly yes (I love what I'm seeing)

  • Leaning yes

  • Can't decide either way

  • Leaning no (but don't sack him yet)

  • Firmly no (he should be sacked)

4 rounds in and we haven’t played a single side that looks a finals contender yet. Only a fool would judge us as being anything great at 2:2 and having played GWS, Tigers, Port and Freo. But it’s no surprise that you’re seeing us as world beaters.
The pleasing thing is that we are beating/nearly beat teams in the 10 to 14 range.

I don't expect ust to play Finala this year. However we are better than last year.

Need to finish 9 to 12 bracket this year for this year to he considered good.

I’d be disappointed if that bracket isn’t our minimum

Nicks has a very long way to go to prove his coaching history is a thing of the past. there were signs during both the Port match and the Fremantle match of his old ways creeping in at times. Richmond and GWS were both Nicks too a tee. So yeah, i need to see a lot more improvement. Most of what we see is still youthful exuberance and natural improvement as players get experience.

Your final comment says it all - natural improvement as players get experience. That’s why the last 4 years have been hard to judge Nicks on - he hasn’t had the cattle (AFL level players with suitable experience). That’s starting to improve and with it our game style is improving

So the jury is still out on whether he can coach imo

I understand losing. Trust me I not once expected anything than a bottom 4 finish in the past 3 seasons. For mine though its the way we lose. This is where I am drawing my conclusions and frankly I've seen nothing this year that has changed my mind.

I guarantee that if the club thinks we are a top 6 club and Nick's isn't achieving that, they will move him on very quickly for a quality coach. Nick's has proven that he can bond a group and I will certainly give him credit for that and I acknowledge that's a good quality. He hasn't proven that he is strategically adept and is able to make moves before they need to be done on match day. We need to see that on Matchday consistently and we haven't to this point.

My advice for Nick's when he speaks publicly as well is to be more confident about the team and stop talking up the opposition as world beaters when we all know they aren't. It sounds amateurish. He has a long way to go to beconing a great coach but I'm not writing him off. I would just like to see more rapid improvement from him.

" The way we lose"....

Strange that quite a few of the Victorian media commentators have often mentioned that generally we are a hard team to play against and rarely get blown right away on the scoreboard?

These quality coaches you speak of are who exactly?

Those last two sentences sound like an each way bet to me?

When he took over he was given the worst list since Fitzroy.
Any other coach would've given up within 3 years.
This guy is the real deal, can you imagine what he would've achieved with ports list????

As I’ve posted before, I think he’s a fairly good coach, but I don’t think he’s got the edge required to rebuild to a genuinely contending group.

He certainly doesn’t have the grumpy coach persona that defines most successful coaches. You think of Hardwick, Clarkson, Scott, Beveridge, Malthouse, Longmire, Matthew’s who are probably the most successful coaches this century - they are all grumpy buggers, with the press and with losing

Goody and Simpson perhaps break that mould a bit - and they are two relatively recent examples. And as gets commented across employment these days this generation need a slightly different approach to the older generations. A softer touch.

I was happy with Nicks being extended until end of next year because I think by then it will be clear if he has what it takes and if required the incoming coach will have a group that are pretty well ready to go and doesn’t have “lazy habits” as Nicks has had a good contested focus for the group

This is mostly me. Someone said he is a good assistant - I tend to agree

The last two weeks have been a huge improvement, but I'm still waiting until mid to late 2023 before passing judgement.

Don't forget last year in the first 6 rounds

Lost to Freo by a point
Beat Port
Beat Richmond
Lost to Essendon by 4 points
Upset the Bulldogs in Ballarat

We started off just as well (maybe even better), but by half way through the season we were cooked. It's way too early to be saying that we're better than last year.

Didn't get blown away, true. But did we give ourselves a chance to win? This is the critique of Nicks. He protects the losing margin. Sometimes from the outset of the game he has already geared the side to lose but in a way that looks respectable.

Without getting ahead of ourselves but St Kilda, Carlton, Essendon, Collingwood, Sydney and The Crows have all not beaten a single team in the current top 8.
We have however at least played against two finalists from last season and an "away" showdown where we were expected to lose comfortably. Our results are average but the form line is impressive.

The ladder is not yet reflective of team quality.

The biggest positive so far is that we haven't been as heavily reliant on Walker, Laird, Keays or Smith.

Tex in particular was the only thing that stopped us winning the spoon again in 2021 and was instrumental in a number of our wins last year.

All have been fairly average so far by their standards.

Dawson has been our best senior player by the length of the Flemington straight so far.

Really loving what Nicks is doing with our spread of players with regards to CBA's this year.

In 2022 - for 14 games we only had 4 players attend 20% or more CBA's. The other 8 games we had 5 players attend 20% or more CBA's (obviously excludes ruckman and is midfield only).

So far in 2023 -

Rd 1 - 6 players
Rd 2 - 6 players
Rd 3 - 6 players
Rd 4 - 7 players

Much more versatile and flexible. Good to see.

100%.

Have been 3-3 in both 2021/2022 before falling apart.

We are a legit chance of being any combination of 4-2, 3-3, 2-4.

We have a pretty tough schedule from 7-11 facing the Pies, Cats, Saints, Bulldogs and Lions. Thats gonna tell us a hell of a lot more about where we are headed than the first 6 rounds IMO.
