Opinion Matthew Nicks: Adelaide's Coach

Is Matthew Nicks the right coach for Adelaide's rebuild?

  • Firmly yes (I love what I'm seeing)

  • Leaning yes

  • Can't decide either way

  • Leaning no (but don't sack him yet)

  • Firmly no (he should be sacked)

Make no mistake Nicks got a bath tonight in coaching.

Moving Dawson down back worked against kids in Launceston (or at least didn't hurt us).

Moving Dawson down back against a 4th qtr specialist team with momentum is just amateur hour.

Pies showed numbers around the ball is king.

He did go into all CBA’s last quarter - and we didn’t win any
Importantly Laird didn’t touch it in the last quarter - we got smashed out the back of stoppage. Let JDaicos destroy us

Defensive rubbish in the last. Hack.
And we wonder why players from bigger, more sophisticated states have historically wanted to escape our club and its group of feral supporters. It’s just so totally embarrassing - can’t you see it?

Half decent kicking from our elite players and we are 5 in a row and the fickle ones would be up and about

It’s the logic throughout this thread.

Everything bad is Nicks’ fault.

Everything good is in spite of him.

He was our coached in the last quarter, but Macrae is ******* good.

He failed that test, and it’ll sting for a while, but coaches, like players, can get beaten, this doesn’t mean they’re no good.

Good point - and while part of the last quarter could definitely be put on coaches - sometimes you need your players to win the ball and we didn’t have enough gas for our boys to do that in the last

I'm not suggesting that Dawson up in the contest wins us the game, I'm simply suggesting that matching them for bodies around the contest gives us a better chance of not losing it every time.

Both teams had the spare and used them differently.

Fly also made ballsy calls like throwing Moore forward.

6-6-6, did he start in defence or play midfield and move to defence? If it’s the former someone had to move out

Went to 4 CBA’s in the last quarter so started midfield and then dropped behind the ball - like he has done a fair bit over the past month

We were playing defensive footy most of the last qtr. Trying not to lose, weren't trying to bury them.

Rubbish. We were playing defensive footy because we were getting destroyed in stoppage which meant we were always on the back foot and trying to pick our way through the whole zone.
For me we ran out of gas. The overlap run of Noble and JDaicos in the last just carved us up. 16-4 clearances for the quarter , Laird had 2 handballs, Soligo had gone off only 5 of our players had more than 3 touches in the last quarter - they had 13
Fitter, more mature big bodies around the ball overran us
They bat so deep - we are still thin through the middle

People revert to habits when under the most pressure. I think on field and in the box we went to panic mode today. I think sometimes in sport there are self-fulfilling prophecies - after our poor goalkicking we just tried to hold on for dear life for 20 minutes and lost intent and shape.

When people watch the replay look how this pans out

1st quarter we moved the ball on instinct - both the player by foot and the intended target both moved in sync

A few passages in the last quarter where the passer looked lost because the target was either in the wrong spot - hadnt moved - or had moved away

Nick's went back to his old ways. Curb the opposition. You need to score to win. That soligo move was dumbfounding. He almost should be sacked for that. That and Dawson out of the middle definitely cost us 4 points.

Rough sequence of events as seen by me on TV coverage:
  1. Josh Daicos scored a goal 9:40 (real time not game time) into the final quarter.
  2. The game falls into a tense stalemate, a few behinds either way
  3. Commentators note that Dawson has dropped behind the ball as a loose defender.
  4. Shortly after this, John Noble kicks a goal 27:32 into the last quarter
  5. Collingwood dominate the possession and field position in the last five minutes to win. Despite terrible goalkicking accuracy (0.2 from 4 shots in this period I think)
Adelaide were matching Collingwood for ~12-15 minutes until the point Dawson went back, when everything fell apart structurally.

Either Dawson moved himself (highly likely for mine) or Nicks instructed him to. Either way it's on Nicks to tell him to cut that shit out.

No. This is just what you want to think.

Plenty of people on here recognize his positive traits and have discussed them at length. Once more - he is a great guy, the players absolutely love him. The team plays for him and he has installed a tremendous culture. This is all part of coaching and he gets an A+ for that IMO.

The knock on him is that he isn't great tactically. We MUST bring in a tactical senior assistant if we are to move forward. His use of the sub alone this year has been catastrophic. Brown as a tagger in rd 1 - stupid. TT as the sub against Richmond - Doubly dumb.

Taking off Soligo in a low scoring game instead of a tall was just about the dumbest thing he could have done at 3/4 time. There is no logical explanation.

Blind Freddy can see our best subs have been running ball users - (Sholl/Jones). For the next few weeks we need to utilise Cook/Nankervis as our sub.

This. We were dead on our feet and our midfield(Including Dawson)came to a complete halt. Dawson was largely ineffectual around the ball as he had been hammered all night. Probably removes himself as he realised they were just running past him.

I dont see it as going defensive as much as trying to keep our drowning heads above water. Couldnt even go man on man or muster up the effort to get around the stoppage if they wanted to. Just look at Murphy being 25m away from a flu ridden Sidebottom in the dying minutes.
Soligo going down hurt us big time(He was flattened in the 3rd I think. Not a voluntary or tactical sub).

we lost a fair bit of our speed around the contest with Soligo benched and Dawson behind the ball. Pies had no trouble running clear of the pressure. Should have seen a fair bit of Rankine in there.

Radio said he was not injured and pretty sure nicks has said the same, they just wanted more run, which is even more dumbfounding as to why you’d take soligo off.
