Opinion Matthew Nicks: Adelaide's Coach

Is Matthew Nicks the right coach for Adelaide's rebuild?

  • Firmly yes (I love what I'm seeing)

  • Leaning yes

  • Can't decide either way

  • Leaning no (but don't sack him yet)

I saw some people saying they didn't like how Nicks speaks but I think he's presenting himself quite well thus far. Seems to speak fluently and clearly which is important for the head coach role.
Me too. There is an openness in his face and eyes I liked. Hope the fans don't knock that out of him.

I'll have to get used to a voice that sounds like he spent the last 6 hours screaming across the paddock at a bunch of duds with no oomph. Did the port years do that to him? :)

He talked about talking with Rory AND with Tex about what is needed for them to play at their best. Then mentioned the rest of the playing group. Interesting that he still included Tex there. He might not have the title of Captain but it implied to me that Nicks knows that Tex is still a leader.

Thought not only did he speak well and seriously he showed some personality by letting us see a jovial side too. Impressed so far but lets face it no one has any idea til he takes full control and we see what style we serve up next year. As he said, we can be inconsistent, lose matches but most of us understand where the club is at so it's just about the spirit showed to a certain degree too.

He would know that Tex is a 'heart and soul' guy for AFC, and he would like that, and want to show it in little ways, like mentioning Tex in the manner he did.

After looking at the list of possible senior coaches in waiting while Freo's job was vacant Nicks was one I rated pretty well.

His resume isn't the most impressive out there but he's consistently been named as a future senior coach and has seen finals footy a bit in his time (Including the Grannie this year)

He's a bit of a mystery compared to a Kingsley or a Yze but I think he can do well. Good luck Nicks and the Crows!

Says we won't pick players based on age. It's based on if they're willing to play for their mates, play their role. Already knew he is big on culture but he brought culture up a few times also.
That was the one comment, and only comment I didn’t instantly love.

Because it screams tex/dmac. Plays for their mates. And they play their role.

But it screams the culture he wants to instill is one where Fogarty will flourish. I’m super keen for 2020 now.

Did I miss something, or did he repeatedly mention his Sydney years and culture, repeatedly mention his GWS time and the culture there, but never once mentioned the 8 years in between?

That was pretty street-wise of him.

Or, he did say he is sticking to the positives, so maybe that's why he had nothing to say about the port years....

If we're fair dinkum about this list "refresh" and "rejuvenation" we're talking about there is no way Mackay should play a single AFL game in 2020
