Great Job Reaction GIF

Hasleby definitely stalks the board.....

West Coast have been urged not to blink first over the No.1 draft pick.

Instead, Fremantle great Paul Hasleby says the Eagles could take a massive draft night gamble that, if it pays off, could result in the club hitting the jackpot - securing both No.1 prospect Harley Reid and top local talent Daniel Curtin.

Hasleby suggestion involves the Eagles keeping the top selection, taking Reid as expected.

Should Curtin slide - as some experts predict - beyond North Melbourne’s pick two and three, and potentially Hawthorn’s pick four, the Eagles should look to trade their future first-round pick to secure the key defender.

And there’s a very good reason rival clubs might take them up on the offer.

“Many, including his manager (Jason Dover), think Curtin could be the best of all of them. Why don’t West Coast have a crack at both players (Reid and Curtin),” Hasleby told SEN.

“You take pick number one and you choose Harley Reid. You lock him in.

“Then through live trading, you wait to see what happens.

“Curtin in draft boards around the place seems to fall outside the top five.

“Now, I’ve often thought North Melbourne has to take him. They need a centre half back and he’s the best in the draft.

“Jed Walter (tied to Gold Coast) will be pick number two. Essentially North will have three and four. If he gets through the Roos, then you strike. Go in.”

Hasleby admits the rebuilding Hawks will likely hold on to pick four but is more optimistic that West Coast could prize a top 10 selection from Western Bulldogs (5), Melbourne (6), Greater Western Sydney (7) and Geelong (8).

“What if West Coast went to GWS or Geelong and offered their future first?” he said.

“I think only optimistic West Coast fans would have them climbing the ladder next year. You’d be banking on them getting the wooden spoon again.

“If you were Geelong and you’re entering 2024 with West Coast’s first pick… and maybe pick 23 this year, which will get pushed back a bit to about 27.

“So they still get a good player (this year) and set themselves for next year.

“If you’re West Coast, you get two elite talents in and you fast track it, bringing one in a year in advance.”

So WE sweeten the pot by adding a second rounder? **** sake, Hase. What a horrible take. Obviously he was only skim reading the posts and mistook what some people were saying about getting another pick back.

Is Curtin really that good that we would trade our first pick next year, which if we won another spoon might be worth two top 10 picks next year if we traded down, for one bloke in this draft who the AFL consensus suggests isn't good enough to crack the top 5 in this years draft? Lets not let the fact that he is from WA inflate our assessment of how good he actually is.

Okay I was against this half round nonsense but now that I see it annoys Victorians I am all for it

It kind of annoys me too, but I’m relaxed knowing that all the dodgy fixturing isn’t going to cost us a finals spot this year.

When we’re challenging again, that’s when I’ll get up in arms about all the bastardry that goes on.
