Coach Men's Senior Coach: Brad Scott

If we had of kept snelling and Voss (snelling in particular) that would have actually said more about Scott to me in a negative way.

Snelling was getting gifted games late in the year after having an absolute dog shite year and I thought to myself he must be one of the coaches favourites or something,
so to get rid of him showed the type of balls I want to see, genuine list clogger.
Can’t believe people are advocating for him to have stayed, he’s a long way from the 2021 snell that finished 3rd in the bnf. That was at his peak. Went nowhere but down.

De-listing Snelling is another good insight into the brave new world we're in.

We're going all in on the softest, most front running, weak outside shite that we're capable of in the hope that we can cheat the system and win a final next year.

When Hardwick lost his composure do you think he called Essendon spuds because it is made up of hard-working blue collar toilers (which is what Hardwicks's premierships were built on)?

I've been warning people that Brad Scott is not hard and has not brought any of the qualities he is associated with to the team. The numbers confirmed it, the eye test confirmed it and now the list management is confirming it.

Voss is symbolic, too, but, he doesn't matter because he is a rookie and we should just ignore 50% of the players we recruit each year.

Come on.

I agree that this team is full of front runners

But retaining Snelling would not help. He’s too limited. He chases and tackles but isn’t good enough to be a reliable role player into the future.

To be any good we need players who will do a better version of what we hoped he would do.

It would be better to get worse for two years while actual AFL players learn to pressure than to commit to more mediocrity.

Snelling was one of the spuds Dimma was talking about…

Bit off topic, but I had to chuckle when I saw this on BB.......

Went to a sportsman’s night last night with Walla and Merrett. Neither said much controversial but when asked about their best win of 2023 Zach said it was great beating ‘Those spuds over at Richmond’.

Can't help but think there's an alternate reality where the same people are saying 'Gah hanging onto players like Snelling and Voss! Clearly both list cloggers! This club is going nowhere under Scott if he can't even make the easiest of decisions!'

Not to mention if we got Clarko, Ross or Yze we would be lamenting how things could have been if only we had gotten Scott

Jacob Townsend was the most Richmond small we had. And he was such a spud that Dimma gave him to us!
And we tried to use him as a KPF.

Snelling is symbolic. He's another example of how we have prioritised everything other than grit, two way defence and the hard ball under Scott so far.

Scott doesn't need 5 years to demonstrate his priorities. He needed 5 weeks to start when he tipped us over the edge for Tsatas.

Scott's argument is that the game is heading that way away from congestion and the hardball. Let's hope he is right about that.

Scott’s wrong about that if basketball is anything to go by (as afl is a similar style game)

Regular season games will be less contested but in finals games physical hardball contested footy will be the priority.

As far as Snelling goes. He’s just not good enough and a player not at the level that tries his best is still at the end of the day a player not at the level.

It’s hard to be a leader/example if your example is that of a spud

Melting about a fringe AFL player being delisted is an interesting tactic that's for sure. Especially one that hasn't really displayed the 'good' form for 2 seasons now.

Grit/Contested ball is a must in modern footy but also is foot skills (especially in transition) and gut running.

Snelling may have grit but his kicking is abysmal, and I think post injury his running hasnt been up to the mark either.

He was at his best for us more as a link man on the half forward line not as a pure pressure forward, since the injury he cant perform this role well because he keeps turning the ball over with pop gun kicks.

It's interesting to listen to Goldstein's first interview on the club website, the role he's envisioning is evidently the one he's been sold on by Brad, but also his reflections on what Brad is like as a coach and what he wants to do here.

In particular, he talks a lot about Drapes and how he wants to pass on his knowledge about how to prepare for games, particularly as a cross-code athlete who came late to footy (Goldstein from basketball, Draper from soccer). He talks about the midfield group who he respects in their own right but feels he has something to contribute in terms of his knowledge of how midfields work (which makes sense when you think about it... how much would Flip have known with 50 odd games compared to 300+?) That's at least 600 hours playing against other midfields, plus all the time spent at training and reviewing footage and whatever.

Evidently Scott has given him a similar spiel to the one Flip got, about you're not the 'back up', but you're not No 1 either, you're going to have to compete for a spot but if you deserve it you'll get it sorta thing.

And then with regard to Scott personally, talks about him being honest and tells you exactly what he expects and what your role is going to be in the team. Very clear communicator.

McKay also got a really good sell from the club. The process for him started halfway through the year, and got a really good sell from Brad on the journey, what the group can do, where they're going and getting him excited to be part of that. Says it's been playing out over the last 5-6 weeks but hints that it goes back further than that 😝 Wants to improve himself as a player but 'those great teams have such a great backline and I want to be part of the best backline in the league'.

Both of them are childhood bombers who want to play on Anzac Day and in front of big crowds and whatever, that sounds like the same line we've heard forever either from Dodoro or the media team feeding them lines I guess.

Gresham talking of a stressful couple of months but also pumping up Scott's tyres, "spoke to Brad, loved his messaging".

One thing that comes through consistently is how Scott is a good communicator and commands respect. IMO, that is what all good coaches are regardless of game plan.

Something it seems Rutten struggled with.

This coming season is really the first time we can judge Scott IMO. First full run at it as he came in so late last season.

The off field stuff seems more stable than it has since Sheeds heyday, from afar anyway. Can't be more impressed with Scott myself.
