LP?

Yeah I like the concept of 'wins' as far as learning, and agree with McGrath and Langford being wins. Baldwin consistently playing back is a kind of win, but I don't think there's a full understanding of his capacity unless he gets consistent time in the seniors.
Other wins as far as learning about the players, I think include;
Laverde
BZT
Ridley
Martin
Hobbs
Phillips
Bryan
Caldwell (but I think there's still more to be known about Caldwell in terms of his capacity to go to another level)
Langford
Menzie
Merrett
Heppell
Weideman
Parish (...I think he realised that Parish can flourish alongside Setterfield)
Setterfield on-ball, not on a wing.
Tsatas
ADJ
Munkara

I'm not sure we / Scott has necessarily learned anything new about;
Hind
Redman (only because he has been ultra consistent for a couple of years now)
Draper
Durham
Shiel
Stringer
Perkins
Jones
Snell
Guelfi
AMT
Wright

I think we're learning about Perkins by him starting at CBs, but how the second list (and some of the first list, like Weideman) is challenged over preseason will be interesting.

Yeah, I'm not sure how I feel about the idea that for Parish to be at his most effective, he needs Setterfield there. I know Setters gives Zach space as well, but as you pointed out, he's not one-dimensional like Parish... well, he seems one dimensional to me anyway.

There's heaps here I hadn't considered.
Durham individually I wasn't sold on having demonstrated much more than last year, except that his tank seems to have improved, but his wing pairing with Martin has proven to be really productive, especially when you consider that Martin likes to push forward more. I'd like to see Duz hold more of his marks.

Also agree, the lack of marking talls around the ground is stark. A tall marking key back will hopefully allow Ridley to push up and do more of that, as well as Laverde / BZT. Not sure what happens there though.

I think with the marking talls it’s an all over the ground issue.

For instance it’s gotten better since Wright returned but having little marking impact from whoever’s been playing ruck and CHF has been an issue.

Weed/Flip/Draper/Jones/Bryan have all struggled to offer much in a contested marking capacity for a variety of reasons.

Will be interesting to see how Cox impacts that tonight. Even consistently bringing the ball to ground would be an improvement.

Really need Setterfield taking marks through the middle as well, and although they've improved, I'm sure the need for the rucks to take more marks around the ground would be on Scott's radar as well. This is what Bryan should pass Phillips on.

Gee whiz, could really use another big forward with a thick neck whose eyes are a little too close together that can smash a pack
And then have the ball go straight to a Dogs defender for an easy rebound?

You’d take it over Guelfi playing centre half forward.

Menzie out is also quite staggering if fit, he’s the only player we have that combines aerobic ability with pressure and forward craft, he’s indispensable.

He chose to go away from what was at least a little bit successful, he chatted shit, and he got banged.

Gotta fix up the team balance next week. It’s all out of sync
We’ve gone back to playing the slow horrible brand of footy we played last year
We totally lack run from the backline. Stop & prop does not work for the whole game.

Hind needs to play, McGrath back to pocket in a stopping role, he turns the ball over too much for a running back. Kelly might be a good 1 on 1 defender, but he must be the slowest player in the AFL. He is like a handbrake, always stops, never plays on.

Forward pressure too, Snelling, Guelfi are not best 22 going forward. Get Menzie in and one of Wanganeen/Davey.

Yep our smalls just don’t have speed. Davey has to come back in.
And I know mass isn’t the best defender, but we need another good ball user who can hit 45m darts.

We have two guys (Ridley, Redman) who can move the ball to a very high standard across our back 7. One (McGrath) who, to put it kindly, is average in this regard. And then four (Zerk, Kelly, Laverde, Heppell) who can't really be trusted to do much with the ball once they win it and have to use it very conservatively.

This is absolutely something we need to turn around asap though realistically the offseason. As suggested elsewhere, ADJ to half back is such an easy call, as would be someone like Cox. A great way to build up the confidence of a young player and keep them involved in the game (as Pies did with Daicos and North did with Sheezel), while teaching them about defending and team acts.

Not just run, we also lack speed of thought.

So often we telegraph the switch, the opposition roll over prematurely leaving open players and kicking lanes in the corridor, which we ignore and continue the switch to their set up wall.

We almost looked nervous to pull the trigger at times tonight.

The Cats game still lingering in the players minds, there was no dare.

this is the gibberish I managed to take down while he was talking:

pressure good

ability to nail a tackle to win a HTB FK not good

not a direct correlation but it does line up a fair bit, we end up down 30 in CP, 30 in GB. 30 inside 50s a piece

Been pretty efficient going forward most of the year, weren't tonight.

structure didn't change after quarter time, but Bont, Treloar lifted and our young mids looked a bit tired and a bit flat. have to look at that and get some spark.

beaten in clearance, cp, groundball. i50 differential pretty good considering those numbers.

across the course of the year those mids have done a terrific job, relished the challenge. as a collective badly beaten, not just in the midfield.

i50 stoppages, inability to build pressure disappointing

strike a better balance between working hard throughout the week, game to game. want every player to improve, strong development focus across our list. gotta have a good think about that and how to make sure the players are fresh for games. coz it looked like that tonight.

weren't direct enough, slow out of the back half, ball movement out of the back half has been pretty good this year but bulldogs credit they stifled that tonight. changes there didn't really translate into forward half pressure.

Ridley looks like a quad strain, will get it scanned and find out the details. did it kicking so it wasn't a cork.

Naughton v Ridley was great tonight. JUH, they've got some really good capability forward of the ball. wasn't just our defenders.

what's changed since Port, Adelaide? looked flat, last week we were comprehensively outplayed by a better team right at this stage, Geelong are where we wanna be and we're striving to close that gap.

Is Stringer fit? well he's playing, so he's fit. every player is carrying something at this time of the year and Jake's no different. Jake wouldn't make excuses and wouldn't want me to make them either.

Everyone expects him to be a match winner but he's not the only one up there.

In a challenging position because we do have selection pressure every week, but we need to get better as a team and we need to see what that looks like whether that's forward structure, ruck structure. whole lot of things that go into it. against Adelaide it looked fantastic and it wasn't a whole lot different tonight.

8 day break helps, we'll go to work on that. balance on trying to get work into players to improve and if you really want to improve each individual players' development plan then you've gotta do some training, but we've got to balance that to make sure they're ready to go next week.

Slow out of half back, we have been since Kelly in the side.

I don't think it's a result of Kelly being in the side so much as Kelly, Heppell and McGrath all joining the backline in lockdown roles.

Someone else said something in some other thread that I had open a second ago which makes me think that we don't have enough rebound off half-back which results in Redman's lane getting clogged by the opposition. If we had two rebound players they'd have their hands full, but as it is they can shut him down and then it's game over for scores from rebound.

If we can get a better small defender, we can release McGrath to rebound, although he needs to tidy up his kicking or go for a jog instead of throwing it on the boot. Otherwise, bring Hind or D'Ambrosio in to provide rebound while McGrath defends.

Your right,

Kelly just need options going past. McGrath lacking confidence and handballs into trouble too much.

But we definitely need more run half back coming through the middle.
