Player Watch Mid-Season Pick #13 (2021) - Jed McEntee

No doubt Jed is one of the least talented players on an AFL list but the criticism he cops is a bit harsh and ill directed.

Personally, I blame Fantasia. He’s got all the talent in the world and is very well paid to be soft and give no output.
I agree about Fantasia however imho McEntee should never have been selected in the mid season draft let alone recontracted for a further 2 years. Played mid for Sturt but is nowhere in the ballpark of an AFL quality mid. Defensive forward is actually an oxymoron and not a position on the field. Our coaching and game plan is abhorrent. Sorry if it comes across as personal.

He's a barely passable SANFL midfielder, who we drafted, and then played in a position and given a role he had never done before by a coach with NFI, at a much higher level of competition than he had played before.

And we wonder why he averages a handful of touches and half a goal per game?

I believe he should never have been drafted, never been picked in the side, and should be delisted asap.

Doesn't mean it's his fault, or that I hate him, or that he's not trying his best, or that I blame him.
Like many on here, it's the club/coaches that are the source of my vitriol.

It's weird that most of the time he looks genuinely slow out on the field. I wonder if its because he is running hardery for longery the entire game and is constantly out of puff.

I just hate defensive forwards and a negative game style. Collingwood and Brisbane are prime examples. Small and medium forwards with creative flair, run and goal sense. Give me that over McEntee and DBJ any day.
Beau McCreery is the textbook definition of a 'defensive forward'. He's just actually good at it.

Put McEntee in Collingwood's team and McCreery in our team and the output from both players would be different.

Getting something out of Rozee/Butters/Horne-Francis or Daicos/De Goey/Moore is nothing to do with coaching, it's just a given. Getting something out of more limited players by giving them the confidence they need to execute a clear and simple role within a well structured team that maximises their strengths and minimises their weaknesses is the very definition of coaching.

Our coach is rubbish so our role players will mostly look rubbish.

There's probably half a dozen or more Collingwood premiership players that would end up plodding around bereft of direction & belief in the SANFL under DD.

The output from McEntee would be different because he'd probably be getting much better numbers in the VFL.

I thought I would do a mid dive, not a deep drive on the year of Jed Mac and Cheese.

He played 22 games for the year for the Power.
He started Round 4 and played every game after that including both finals.

He was 164th overall for goal scoring with 0.64 goals a game.
Jed was 291th overall for tackles with 2.91 a game.
He was 165th overall for goal assists with 1.05 a game.
His marking was 546th best in the comp with 2.18 a game.
His scoring involvements were good for 314th with 3.14 a game.
His best stat was tackling inside 50 which was good for 39th at 1.27. I'm pretty sure earlier in the year, he was Top 5 or so.

I'm sure he is a nice guy who loves greyhounds but he's a black hole of a forward and those stats with that amount of games in just another Kenny Average stat for you all.

And for Schulzy, Pressure Acts Jed is 121st overall with 16.5 a game supposedly the best part of his game.

Also, hilariously, not even in the top 100 for the all important pressure acts.

He's not even actually good at the one thing that he's supposed to be good at.

lol he's not even good at SANFL level, that's the weirdest thing about this whole situation. He was garbage in the SANFL and then got promoted and played every game like he was some sure bet JHF tier pick.

Those stats though, a full season and I'd wager he's probably the worst player this season for how many games he's played in the position he's played them in. It's so ****ing weird.

Yeah Doc, that was my general idea when I decided to have a look at him, that is, the worse stats but with the most game time during the season. A double whammy.

Jed looks surprised and confused when he gets the ball. Its like, how did that happen and what am I supposed to do now?
lol remember when he had the ball on the SACA member wing in the final and had an open Port player and just skied the ball between the opposition player and the port player like a total spud. He was in open space under no pressure when he did it too.
