There's no doubt, in my mind, that TSW put the wheels in motion with his FB wall post ;)

lolz - i love giving TSW credit, but I do know that the club has been in constant talks with the AFL about compensation and how its affected etc

i hear that there is strong protection on the 4th year of the contract pending performance clauses in year 3 FWIW
So he can be a shit truck for two years, play ok in the 3rd and get his 4th?

Dont think that deal is all that bad, 1.6 over 4 years would be just above average, considering our position i think its a win.

My thoughts exactly..

Forget the boak contract I think this is the worst...

At 400k a year or Pearce at 550k I dunno...if we won or lost
Good call.

4 years is a bit long, but at $400K per year its not ridiculous if we envisage Monfries being in our first 22 (which he should be). At least he's not going to be able to demand more money after 2 years. That aside, the amount reported may not necessarily be true.

The downside being if he fails miserably we have to wait 4 years to get rid of him. I think we know the level we will get from him though, solid if not spectacular.

Regardless, welcome to the club Gus.

Which player would get paid more at age 27 than at age 25 when up for contract both times? (after inflation/AFL mandated increases across the board).

Freo never win

i believe the club knows roughly where it stands now, and how it will be affected if we were to sign players like russell etc as free agents

wont be public till the end of free agency

When does it end? I can't believe how long they have made this whole thing now! I thought FA ended Friday

So long to Gus. Always thought he would become a great player when he matured physically. Could be a very good pick up for you guys so long as you give him a focus, was poor last year and IMO was due to being used as a bit part HF/Mid rotation.

Pick 48 is nothing to give up to a player that will most likely play every game next year. 4 years is a long contract but chances are pick 48 would be delisted in 4 years.
pick 48 could be replaced in 2 years, and his list spot made available for rookie pick #7 that came on. Or a new draftee in 2014.

Long contracts burn us regularly.

I'm content with giving up pick 48 for him

The 4 year deal was probably what was required to tempt him

Commercial realities have to be accepted, rather than having a temper tantrum like Portia.

Both of these points, Monfries for pick 48, is still a pretty good trade. And i'm of the firm beleif we're still not close to 100% cap room so its good to be attracting players to our club.

But he is still the type of the player that we could be going
"why did we give him 3+ years?" and begging that we trade him halfway through year 2/3

Guess we'll have to wait and see, you're taking the most pessimistic view possible though. I'm happy that we've secured someone that will immediately improve our squad. Also has the 4 years been officially confirmed?

Commercial reality says that if you take a bad deal because its the only deal on offer, it doesn't mean its suddenly a good deal.

We could keep our pick, approach players that will do a 2 year deal, there are so many options out there. If Monfries is "4 years or nah", there is absolutely no definition by which he is a rare enough player-type that we must take that deal.

You have it arse about

We wanted the bloke, the 4 years was what he required to come to us, the terms were acceptable, we are content, the player is content, we get our guy.

As neither of us work in our recruiting department, we both are having a stab at the process, I reckon mine is more realistic.

I don't give two ****s about the process, all I know is we've signed a middling small forward to a four year contract at age 25, and given up a third round pick for the privilege.

4th year requires a number of performance based targets which need to be met prior.

yep, pretty much how I was told it. Port and angus have both done well to find a deal that is win win, with a suitable amount of "insurance" for each party

My question has always been that do we want him because he's a good fit for our side, or do we want him just because we can? His 2012 stats don't look that flash.

Oh well. Best of luck to him, as he's a Power player now.
