Certainly brought tears to Sewell's eyes on AFL 360 that week.
(Seriously if anyone has that footage could you please post it)
Yes, I know it happened in a reserves match... Yes, his last game was dismal - I remember he came off at the end with black bags under his eyes... Maybe one late night too many and then some... But he still kicked a reasonable tally in his last season.
My dislike of Ayres knows no bounds - I don't know any supporters that have nice things to say about him.
His 14-7 v Bombers was memorable too; a player kicks 14 and team loses!!
Sheedy said he just wanted them to kick more than Ablett.
He was so good.
We have certainly been spoiled by magical moments, games, players., none > GAS. He had so many incredible moments that I am sure he started to get judged too harshly if his goals/marks were not super exciting.
I particularly loved that Sandy Roberts moment- "What more can you say?"
As far as games I've actually attended, by far my happiest time was the first 15 seconds of the 1989 Grand Final: I watched as Bewsie took the ball from the centre and kicked it down Gazza's throat - as if that wasn't enough, I then looked back to the centre to see Dermie flat on his arse trying to breathe. It doesn't get much better than that!

I still blame Ayres, even if it wasn't his fault that GAS retired
I did have his Essendon performance to include in my post, but forgot
Another incredible effort by GAS, with 14.7 goals + 12 marks! Also, must applaud an injured Salmon, who kicked 10 goals. Geelong led for Q2 + Q3, were up by three points at three quarter time, then Bombers won by 24 points! GAS broke Jack Metherell's 10 goal record -v- Essendon at Corio Oval:
"1936, Rd 9 - Geelong 26.18-174 d Essendon 14.13-97 - for a long time this was the Cats' highest score (till 1987). It remained Geelong's highest score against Essendon until 28.13-181 at the MCG in round 9 of 1992 and has not been topped in Geelong. Jack Metherell (10 goals) became the eighth player to kick 10 goals or more for Geelong in Geelong."

More about Jack Metherell:
"Arguably his most auspicious achievement, however, was masterminding, at Launceston in 1960, the first ever win by a Tasmanian state side against the VFL. Metherell's achievement appears all the more noteworthy when you consider that he had been away from coaching for several years prior to the game."

GAS's highlights from Essendon -v- Geelong - Rd6 1993
Ablett makes a young Hird look like a NAB kids player + Derek Kickett hapless lol The way GAS uses his body, such enormous strength through out his torso. The way he gave a quick nudge with his side +/or shoulder, turning to take the mark + bang! Goal! Also the utterly phenomenal huge, long kicks from outside 50m
That's a fantastic interview with Sandy Roberts, not seen it before, so thank you. GAS is very quiet + gracious, isn't he? Interesting he said Danny Frawley was his toughest opponent.
Finally, two things from that era, which should return:
- Those very tight shorts

- The umpires' white coats + hats lol

Thanks Kitty but I meant the footage of Brad Sewell on AFL 360https://www.google.com.au/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0ahUKEwjuwrHHxsTYAhUIjLwKHQQUBnAQtwIIKTAA&url=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=86t_cIzUpus&usg=AOvVaw1qHfCWjtYQ-u-529bFPaGs

Thanks for that. I was at that game , it was extraordinary yet like today most of our fans just sat quietly, seemingly unaware that they were watching probably the best that they would ever see. Watched him kick 12 in a game against Sydney at the SCG, that crowd was more appreciative.
How lucky were we to see him every week for all of those years. just like the joy of watching the 2007-11 team every week for all of those years.
GASr kicked 14 that day, I was there with my Mum, a Swans supporter. Probably one of the best games he played, along with his 14 goals against Richmond.

^^^ In case you don't believe me again
Do you remember the mark GAS took that day, with one finger? A total freak!
And who can forget the prodigious kicks by Ben Graham?
it was fantastic until david cameron decided to order a coffee and have a nap before he took his kick with 1 or 2 mins to go in the GF.In 1989 when we had lost the 2 close ones in a row at Princes Park against Fitzroy and Hawthorn after being miles in front, we came out and won by about 15 goals the next 3 weeks. Then we rolled good sides like Melbourne, Collingwood and Essendon on the G and for the first time in my life i thought, we can really win this.
On reflection the entire 1989 season was just magnificent except for the obvious at the very end.
Did he play it right out? I thought he had 8.8 or something ridiculous 5 mins into the third quarter. On poor old Scotty Turner too iirc. Unlucky bastard couldn't even hide from him in the twos!How does a player with a torn ACL play out the game while kicking (IIRC) 8 goals? Something has always smelled fishy to me about how he was handled... Ablett kicked 80+ goals in his final season, not a bad return by anybody's standards... Gary Ayres has been there when three different clubs have looked down the barrel: Essendon, Geelong (he deserted GFC when it seemed that perhaps it most needed him - but it was a blessing in disguise) and Adelaide. I would never let him put a single toe in Kardinia Park ever again.
Ah yes that sounds right and yes it was 14.If it was Rd8 - 15 May, 1994, GAS kicked 14 that day. I was there with my Mum + also David the Cat was there with his sons - we could have had a BF meet-up, if we'd known lol
Probably my favourite time as a Geelong supporter was the 09GF. Knew there was no hope of getting a ticket to the game, people were selling tickets on Facebook + eBay for $1,500⬆︎, so a Qld friend + I decided we'd make the trip to Geelong + watch the game at Steampacket.
As I was boarding the plane, wearing my Geelong scarf, another friend rang + said:
"Kitty, this is NOT a joke! I'm taking you to the GF!" Well I just started screaming, every passenger just stared at me, so I announced to the whole plane, pointing to my phone "My friend is taking me to the FG!" + the whole plane erupted into cheers + clapping.
Unable to contain my excitement for the next 24 hours, I was just OTT. We went to the GF parade, managed to get a park outside Hardy Brothers *first good omen* + we had so much fun.
Checked into our hotel, run by Colliwobbles' fans Receptionist, Roxanne, was mortified we were Geelong supporters lol
Next morning my friend went to breakfast wearing her Geelong pyjamas, socks + slippers + was booted from the dining room for being inappropriately dressed
Went to a pub before the game + enjoyed some banter with Pies' fans, then off to the game. Our seats were in the Members' Stand, right up in the gods, row QQ IIRC, but I didn't care. When we sat down, it was such a surprise that our view, on the Wing, was fabulous + we could see really well - fantastic design of the MCG.
My friend was seated next to THE MOST VILE Pies' fan, who sneered, made nasty comments + regarded us as on her shoe!
The build-up to the game was huge! Helicopters sneaking a look at StevieJ proving his knee was OK. The massive win over Hawks in in QF2 + WCE in PF2!
The game - faves:
At half-time when I went outside to have a gasper, I was kidnapped by five Pies' fans. I'd witnessed their violent behaviour at the SCG + was petrified, imagining being tarred + feathered. They dragged me off to their group, force me to drink VB + to smoke Longbeach ciggies. One woman cuddled me saying "We're so happy we're playing Geelong in the GF! All the other teams' fans are so horrible to us, but Cats fans are so lovely!" I just thought, yeah, because we're petrified of you lol
- Brad Ottens wining the first centre clearance + Varcoe's opening goal;
- Varcoe's second goal in first four minutes;
- The way Selwood + Bartel surged, taking the team with them in Q2;
- Five goals in the Premiership quarter;
- StevieJ's four goals;
- Tomahawk's three goals in Q3;
- Bartel 3, Hawkins 3, Varcoe 3, Selwood 2;
- Duncan's goal changed the game;
- Ling tagging Swan
- Lonergan shut-down Travis Cloke;
- Ling's goal to seal victory with five minutes to go;
- Scott's fist pump.
What can I say about the atmosphere at the MCG. It was my second Geelong game at the G, my first was when GAS booted 14 against Richmond.
For a NSW person, everything said about the G is true! You just have to experience it + on GF day is the ultimate!
Q1 was nail biting, with the lead changing four times.
Q2 Bartel's goal from the boundary!
Q3 more nail biting with the lead changing five times. Tomahawk's soccer in the goal square.
Q4 when Tomahawk missed two goals, was forced by StevieJ to handball, who kicked the goal lol Varcoe's coast to coast goal!
After 10minutes in Q2, Geelong turned an 18 point deficit into a 38 point win, for a 56 point turnaround!
After half-time, when the Pies were leading, the vile Pies' woman started on us lol Making cracks about the 09GF, to which I replied, it only took us won time to beat the Saints lol She was among the Pies' fans who fled in Q4. Didn't believe we'd won, even when my friend said Pies fans were leaving because they'd lost. Only believed we'd won when Scott did the fist pump when Ling kicked the last goal!
The eeriness of the Geelong chant, towards the end of Q4 - shivers down the spine - goosebumps
Following the GF win, we went to the Geelong Cats GF Cocktail Party + what a blast!
When I shook hands with Ottens, I burst into tears, floods of tears of joy! His hands are ENORMOUS!!! The length of a Sherrin! He gave me a cuddle, while I sank into his blue eyes.
Commiserated with Enright that Rooke didn't play. He said we'd all have given anything to have him out there with us today.
Flirted with Billy Brownless, who said to his friends "All the old girls love me!"
One of my friends was secretly taken on to the Geelong team bus, by StevieJ + when she was discovered, the bus had to turn around + return to Rod Laver Arena lol
The next day at KP for Family Day was another fantastic celebration. Highlight - Stokes dressed as Ironman lol
Forgive my marathon post, I could say so much more
11GF is right up there with one of the best days of my life!
Forget how bad the commentary was. Geelong had all the play with 7 mins to go and 25 points up yet they were still willing them to win with crazy comments like they have to kick 5 goals. Was anyone ever on our side.
In the time Ive been watching he is comfortably the biggest by at least a good 5 plus metres on average. Some of his kicks from kick ins at full back were insane. There was one kick that went a good 5 plus metres past the centre circle at geelong before it bounced. Think it was against Port. No one else has got close to a kick that big since.At times I think he was the biggest kick of a football I've seen. Absolutely effortless 65 metre drop punts.
If you go back to the month leading up to finals, we weren't even considered to make the grand final.If you just watched the pre-game coverage of the '09 grand final, you wouldn't have even known we were playing.
