At least 183 players have nominated for next week’s AFL Mid-Season Rookie Draft, including 29 players who have asked for longer-term contracts if they are to be selected.

While nominations officially close on Wednesday, an updated list of early nominations was circulated to recruiters on Monday.

Players from state league competitions around the country have nominated, as well as some potential surprise packets from local competitions.

Eleven players are undergoing medical testing from the AFL in the lead up to the May 31 draft after attracting significant interest from clubs.

Those players are Clay Tucker (Eastern Ranges), Ethan Stanley (Box Hill), Flynn Riley (Northern Knights), Jack Buller (Claremont), Jaiden Hunter (Perth), James Trezise (Richmond VFL), Mutaz El Nour (Richmond VFL), Robert Hansen Jnr (Subiaco), Ryan Maric (Gippland Power), Rye Penny (Calder Cannons) and Will Elliott (Oakleigh Chargers).

Key forward Maric debuted for Box Hill’s VFL side on the weekend and is one of the players to have nominated for a longer 18-month minimum contract given he is shaping as a likely top-three pick.

Towering 204cm ruckman Tucker has requested a deal that will see him contracted until at least the end of 2024.

Other players to have nominated for longer-term deals include Richmond VFL defender Luke Teal and Frankston VFL midfielder Mitch Szybkowski, who were both expected to be selected in last year’s national draft but were overlooked.

Szybkowski trained with Essendon during pre-season in search of a pre-season Supplemental Selection Period spot, while Teal has impressed with the Tigers in the VFL as well as in two recent Young Guns games.

Tom Hird – the son of Essendon champion James – has also nominated for the mid-season draft as he seeks a second chance at AFL level after some good VFL form with Port Melbourne.

Hird was delisted by the Bombers at the end of last season.

Former Essendon forward Brayden Ham, former Melbourne defender Marty Hore and former Geelong livewire Quinton Narkle are among other nominations.

Small forward-wise, I really like Brandon Leary but I don't know what's going on with him. He was close to grabbing a list spot with Hawthorn this last off-season, then last I heard he signed for a SANFL club, but he hasn't played a game this season.

Leary was meant to go over to the SANFL but he pulled the pin on it and went back to North Launceston. I can’t remember which club he was set to play for in the SANFL, but they were filthy that he pulled the pin because they had sorted him out with employment as well as a rental.

He has played 5 games in the Tassie state league and kicked 14 goals including one bag of six.

I know we were interested at the end of last year as a potential rookie but obviously didn't go with him. I'm not sure why in the end, but he hasn't turned it on at VFL level either this year.

I just watched some clips of him at WAFL Seniors level this year and this kid is electric. Natural off both feet and super zippy - I'll be honest in that I didn't know too much about him before having a quick look at these clips.

Something to work with for sure - I wonder whether being a WA kid might mean he's more likely to end up at a WA club.

His old man was a gun footballer and an even better human.

I have friends that know him well and apparently he’s raised Jnr to be hard at it yet humble.

They’re a very solid family unit but I’m sure they wouldn’t care where Jnr played as long as he’s looked after by the club and his team mates.

North Adelaide's Noah Casalini and Subiaco teenager Robert Hansen Jnr have impressed over the opening rounds of their respective campaigns to be seen among the chasing pack of Mid-Season Draft prospects.

Casalini's 2023 season culminated with a six-goal haul against reigning premiers Norwood on Anzac Day, with the mobile 192cm forward quickly having an impact with the Roosters after signing with the South Australian side last November. The 21-year-old would claim the Sydney Premier competition's best and fairest award in 2022 after booting 35 goals from just 11 games.

After missing out on the draft last year, Hansen has proven to show no issue in taking the step toward senior football in the opening month of the WAFL, impressing as an agile small forward target.

"Guys like Noah Casalini from South Australia. He's moved over I believe from New South Wales. He came from the Northern Academy system there," Alvaro said.

"He's a forward, he won the best-afield medal in North Adelaide's Anzac Day game. He's certainly a pretty handy goalkicker.

Speedster Hansen jnr has received interest from a number of clubs in the lead-up to the mid-season intake and has nominated on a longer-term (18-month) contract through to the end of 2024, while Buller has lodged a short-term (six months) nomination as the 22-year-old key forward aims to land a rookie spot.
