I have some questions, that none of us is likely to know, but i would be interested in some of the varying news reports that you people have heard that might shed some light.

1) What kind of drugs was Cousins using? (you might answer "irrelevant" but humour me)

2) How often do you have to use drugs to be a substance abuser? Does Ben like popping a pill at the pub of a saturday night, or does he sit at home on a wednesday night snorting cocaine?

3) How long have the West Coast Eagles been aware that Ben Cousins was a drug user? Reading in between the lines on The Footy Show tonight, John Worsfold implied that it had been since mid last year. This may be incorrect but it would completely undermine the AFL drugs policy and the West Coast football clubs responsibility to their players if this was the case?

Thoughts opinions anyone?

1) There is a report in the Australian today that Cousins "drug of choice" is cocaine. Note the words "drug of choice" - It would not be unusual to be apoly drug user, and require significant drugs (often illegally obtained legal drugs) to manage the come down. There has been speculation that ice is involved. There is a lot of hysteria in Australia regarding ice - which is not yet backed by police arrests and seizures. If I was a betting man, I'd suspect occasional ice use, but with coke being the stuff he'd come back to.

2) There is no answer to this. Coke and Speed are "functional" drugs. You can use them and most people wouldn't know the difference. I'd argue Drug use becomes abuse when it starts interfering with the rest of your life - in Cousins case dating back to the missed training sessions in July. While there is no word on Cousins usage habits - it could be assumed he is doing more then popping a few E's on a Saturday night.

3) This has not been answered. Worsfold states that he heard rumours back in his Carlton days as he moved back to Perth. He states he questioned players and they "lied" to him. My read is that rumours started becoming facts for the club as of October last year - and October -> December were a major drug taking period for more then one member of the club. I'd also imply (primarily on Worsfolds interview) that some players have backed off since the New Year as season proper approached.

thankyou

that was very insightful

its hard to distinguish a media frenzy from facts

i've often thought over the last couple of days has forced cousins to admit he has a drug problem when in reality he could have been an occasional user
much like Andrew Flintoff was forced to deny he was an alcoholic because he enjoys a big red wine and had a big night out.

3. worsfold heard rumours and innuendo for some time, but without the drug tests results he cant do anything. He asks the Playes concerned and they say there is no problem.

Whats he going to do? suspend players on a hunch?

all he can do is wait for their professionalism to slip and then he can suspend them indefinately. unfortunately in this case cousins was so good that it took a very long time for his professionalism to slip.

1 - Coke and Ice.

What's your source on ice?

The reports on Cousins behaviour (notably the Crown Casino reports) indicate extreme paranoia - which you get when you really start shoving serious quantities of coke up your nose - as well as being an obvious negative effect of speed/ice. That said - him being "asleep" on a park bench albeit "shivering and twitching" tend to fall more in line with coke use then ice use. With ice - sleep is a pretty difficult thing for a long time - and would be nigh on impossible on the same night as ice use, while Coke has a much quicker come down and it's a bit easier to sleep on the same night as it is used.

no source, just Ice usually go's with Coke. Waters it down though.
oh we are talking amphetemines, sorry my mistake.

seriously though, It has been reported as Ice as well as coke as well as speed as well as ecstasy, im just guessing really.

come to think about it though, you're right it probably is'nt ice he is heavily into, grom what i've heard heavy ice users become all scabby on their legs and their face and never wear shorts, this has'nt happened to Cousins so you're probably right.

id imagine ice would have a much more rapid negative effect on ones ability to train and play football at any level.

unlike cocaine ice can quickly render the user to lose all motivation, very quickly, and would cause rapid weight and muscle deterioration in the effected individual.

coke and valium.

remember kerr got done for forging scripts for valium.

guessing maybe a few other players at the club enjoy this combo???

1.It may be Ice, with cocaine being used as an upper, probably sleeping tablets as well. Interesting to note that John Worsfold said the other day that the only drug he was aware cuz had used in recent times was sleeping tablets (perfectly legal). What woosha doesn't know is that people who use ice use sleeping tablets or legal drugs such as zanex's to slow the body down after a binge as it becomes too dificult to relax and fall asleep on ICE. This is what really pretty much gave me the suspicion with regards to the ice, previously i thought maybe it was just cocaine and the odd biccie here and there.

2. In this case if my feelings are correct( i may be wrong and it may be other less 'dangerous' substances) cuz would have got to the point where he would have needed to use the drug on a daily or by daily basis over the past few months as the comedown is not something you want. This drug has a 95% addiction rate in its purest form and is 600 times stronger than cocaine. Makes ecstacy look like a bicardi breezer and cocaine like a jack daniels and coke(pardon the pun), whilst this substance is the equivalent of sculling a vodka bottle straight, if you compare drugs to alcohol. It's very addictive and users often become dependent on it almost immediately, given cousins slide over the past few months you can see the correlation and why it is a possibility that it may be involved. It is also well documented that cuz has been around that scene for a number of years and use of cocaine and ecstasy would of most certainly been occurring, why suddenly such a dependency or larger problem over the past nine months? suggests he thought he could dance with the devil! How wrong he obviously was.

As i've said previously this particular substance makes others such as ecstasy and cocaine look like childs play and it would not surprise me if it is involved. I absolutely despise this substance, this thing has taken over so many lives of people that i know, people that like cuz who are good people from good solid families who probably did substances every now and then and decided to try this cos "surely it can't get me addicted i'm too strong for that and it sounds like a good buzz" how wrong most people are. Nobody is immune no matter who you are or what you do.

All the best to Cousins with his rehabilitation i hope his story and subsequent fall from grace encourages others who may be in a similar position to identify their problem and to seek help, and others who may want to head down that path to have a good look at this bloke who had it all and is basically on the verge of losing it all all because of hardcore illicit substances.
