Game Day NAB Cup Game 1 - Brisbane Lions v St Kilda @ Burpengary

Honestly, I'd be more worried if we'd come out all guns blazing and won by 50. No need to go 100% in our first practise game of the year.
We also didn't get an intra-club game, so added rustiness was to be expected.
- Berger beaten by a Vic club player in Holmes and Longer destroyed him in the ruck. Martin will prove he is the better ruck this season.
- Close not hard enough and doesn't get near it. Get some mongrel in you...
- Zorko makes far too many clangers under minimal pressure
- Both Beams look the goods, Squiz played a very good game aswell.
- Merrett should have demanded a trade last year... will be the top whipping boy this season after Lisle left
- Bewick is best 22
- Green needs to stop lounging around all day and get out there and start running... looking like our new Boonj
- Game plan is rubbish, forwards are soft and don't want to run and our defence is a huge liability... Clarke and Gardiner are good players but we need a decent mature body in there ASAP. Rance would be a perfect get.
- FFS our disposals are absolute crap. Never seen a worse game of footy since my brothers U12s preseason game years ago.
You're in fine form already I see. No need for a warm up, get straight into it. If only our players were so committed!

Nothing like an overreaction to a preseason match.

Don't think it is an overreaction. We named a very strong line-up, we've heard nothing but good reports from the track, we had the chance to win big and make those non-members who turned up want to become members. It was pretty disappointing.

Edit: OK maybe a little.

Only big concern is the delivery from the midfield to the forwards was very poor. Surely having guys like Redden, Beams, Rockliff, Rich, Taylor, etc would mean we should be more efficient then St Kilda's midfield consisting of Armtiage, Weller, Montagna and Newnes.

Fair to say anyone who made the effort to go to Burpengary today is already committed to the cause.

Rarely does preseason form relate to form in the season proper.

And preseason form usually doesn't have much of an effect on membership totals.

Unless you're Dayne Beams.

25 possessions at 80% DE and 7 clearances, those are some Simon Black numbers and admittedly something the fans can get excited about.

But yes, pre-season is mostly about executing game plans, improving match fitness and testing youngsters - I wouldn't get to worked up about form etc.

Dunno ZoBlitz, our membership numbers have stagnated - hazard a guess they went up when we won the NAB Cup. Happy to be proven wrong if there are figures.

Some absolutely shocking handballs given how basic a skill that is.
Thought I'd pull this up, one thing I noticed about Dayne was his clean hands with handballs.

If only you could combine Claye's kicking and Dayne's handballing!

A bit lack lustre, IMHO. just a few random highlights =

Claye Beams looks so at home down back. I just got the feeling that he has decided this is where he belongs.

Lewie Taylor will win a Brownlow. 2 minutes into the game he got a free cos he was the only one of a dozen players that hunted the ball, & just got better.

Paps also looked at home in his new role.

DBeams & MRobbo showed why they are such important pickups.

We can only get better than that.

Oh I think that the nab Cup win probably helped out our numbers but whether you play well or not in preseason matches generally doesn't make too much of a difference in our membership numbers. But then again, I can't give any numbers to prove it one way or another.

Justin's Press conference - he said about players performance:
"JL: Rich was good, as was Dan Merrett, Paparone impressed as well. Dayne Beams was good too, he even copped a tag later in the game"
Interesting that he gave Big sauce a compliment describing him as good.
Also
"POST-GAME PRESSER: @JLeppitsch We were scratchy at best - we underestimated the lack of a practise match to be honest"
