Re: Hardwick now Dons' frontrunner

Maybe Bomber has told them no?

we havent met with him yet! they would have said anyway if bomber said no. How could none of this be announced on essendonfc.com.au or the afl website. If it can get leaked to ten then afl could find out pretty easily. Really dont know about this!

Re: Hardwick now Dons' frontrunner

Until the club confirm it, it is only speculation.

Ten might be right, but they have been wrong before and will be again.

Seems like it could be right though.

Time will tell

if he and Williams hAD ruled us out then we would've made the decision much earlier, you'll see that no decision will,be made untill after the granny

apparently hardwick is soon to be announced as coach said so on sports tonight. As for assistants i can't help but think that stephen silvani would be an excellent defensive coach. He mentored lewis roberts-thomson for the season he was gud since then he has been shit. He's now at St.Kilda and when you think about it there defense has improved with sam fisher etc. I reckon he'd b alright if we could pinch him.

Re: Hardwick now Dons' frontrunner

It might just be just me that maybe the reason why essendon chose the coach could be Judd. They wanted Mark Thompson but i dont think they could wait anylong for him or he said no but i think the coach had to look at the list and see what deals could be done.

How can this be if the deal has already been done with Bomber Thompson?? There's been a few people on here who have said it's been a done deal for a while (citing inside knowledge etc.). We'll see who is the best at making up stories soon I guess.

Re: Hardwick now Dons' frontrunner

Not sure what's going on but this was in the paper today...

AUSTRALIA'S biggest bookmaker has framed a bizarre market on Essendon's coaching job.

Sportingbet Australia opened a market late yesterday offering odds of $1.50 that Geelong coach Mark Thompson would coach Essendon in 2008 and $2.50 he would stay with the Cats.

The bookmaker's AFL manager Stephen Fletcher said rumours had been rife that Thompson would accept a four-year deal worth up to $5 million to coach Essendon.

He said it was planned to keep the market open until game time on Saturday when Geelong plays Port Adelaide in the Grand Final.

Fletcher said he was happy to back his sources that Thompson, who is yet to sign a new deal with the Cats, will return to Essendon where he began his league career as a player.

Already the Bombers have announced their former player Neale Daniher, who resigned as Melbourne coach during the season, has been ruled out of the coaching job.

Hawthorn assistant coach Damien Hardwick, also an ex-Bomber player, and Essendon assistant coach Matthew Knights, remain in the running.

Essendon plans to speak with Thompson after the Grand Final.

Fletcher said he was prepared to punt on Thompson taking the multi-million deal with Essendon.

"Essendon have seemingly stopped looking and are waiting for the Grand Final to end," Fletcher said. "Thompson hasn't re-signed with Geelong, so it seems to make sense. I mean it's just a rumour, but I believe the sources so I'm happy to run with it."

Fletcher said Essendon had plenty to offer Thompson even if its the list was clearly inferior to Geelong's.

"Essendon would be willing to offer Thompson big money and a long-term contract," he said.

Fletcher said if Thompson coaches Geelong to the premiership, he might believe it was the right time to move to the Bombers and rebuild the team as a power.

Sportingbet Australia is also offering odds of $51 that Thompson will coach a club other than Essendon or Geelong or not coach at all.

Thompson's future at Geelong was also the subject of bizarre comments from Collingwood coach Mick Malthouse on the eve of last week's preliminary final.

In his column in The Australian, Malthouse said coaches looked for every skerrick of advantage in September.

"So I can't help but wonder whether doubts over Thompson's future might unsettle Geelong," Malthouse wrote before his side played the Cats last Friday night.

"When you have taken a group of young men this far, the sense of dedication and commitment is intense. I can understand Essendon's interest in Mark, but I'm struggling to work out why he would be contemplating leaving Geelong."

I've highlighted the interesting part of the article...
why would they wait this long, and a week out of the grand final name a coach..
