Best case would be -

Coach: Mark Thompson
Midfield Coach: GOD
Forward Coach: Peter Sumuch
Backline Coach: Damien Hardwick

I know our new coach will have his own ideas on who he would like his Assistants to be but i would really like to see Neal involved in the club, hopefully as a football manager, in some form or another.

He has plenty of experience and that could be invaluable for us to draw on, but only as advice, not as the main man.

I would love to see Neale back at Windy Hill in that capacity :thumbsu:

Pure speculation.

Bomber is a guy who keeps his cards close to his chest, always has.

I just find it hard to believe that Bomber will leave Geelong and hand over a Premiership side (they should win) to someone else with a list as strong as Geelong's got.

I can't get my head around a valid reason why he would come back to Windy Hill. Unless the love of the club is pulling him back..its not about money thats for sure.

Of course it is speculation. Unless any of us are Bomber himself.

I find it just as hard to believe that if he was 100% committed to Geelong, as per your above thinking, that he would not have signed yet. What rational would there be for delaying talks till after the season, when the club comes after you to sign on the dotted line?

And in regards to reasons for leaving, heck, there could be a million possibilities from personal/family/friends to money to the lure of the EFC or a combination of all. Nobody can speculate on that. All we know is that Essendon seem to be delaying the naming of the coach until we meet him next week, and he is refusing to even talk to Geelong about a new contract.

We can only put two and two together.

Coaching appointment process continues

Wednesday, 26 September 2007
Statement from Essendon Managing Director, Peter Jackson: Contrary to some media reports, the Essendon Football Club has not made a decision on the appointment of a new coach for 2008.

The process that we originally implemented continues.
We are not discussing publicly the names of people, or time-lines, involved in this process and an announcement on the coaching appointment will be made in due course.

I am extremely disappointed that some private information regarding the coaching appointment has been provided to the media.
Again, I would like to thank those people who applied and stress that the quality of all candidates has been excellent.

Sumich weighing up Eagles future

WEST Coast assistant Peter Sumich says he will inform the club this weekend whether he will stay with them for 2008 after falling short in his bid to be Kevin Sheedy's successor at Essendon.

Sumich and former Melbourne mentor Neale Daniher were told they were out of the race to coach the Bombers next year, with Hawks assistant Damien Hardwick now the hot favourite to take charge at Windy Hill.

But with offers to become a senior assistant at a couple of Melbourne clubs on the table, Sumich said he was now weighing up his options.

"It is disappointing, but I understand the caper," Sumich told Southern Cross radio.

"I was rapt to get this far, down to the last couple at Essendon and that is probably the pleasing part. The stuff that I presented I know now I am on the right track,"

"Hopefully it is just a matter of time now for me.

"I have sat down with Carlton a few weeks back, and had a good chat with (coach Brett) Ratten and (football operations manager) Steven Icke, and they are going to be a terrific club in the near future.

"And Essendon have gone about offering me a senior assistant's role.

"They are great clubs and it is a matter of me weighing it up and sitting down with West Coast ... seeing where I am at, and where they think I am at with the club.

"I will probably have a decision by Friday or Monday."

John Worsfold's right hand man at the Eagles, Sumich has also been responsible for coaching the midfield touted as the best in the league.

But with Chris Judd leaving and Ben Cousins still rehabilitating, Sumich said he was excited by the new breed of Eagles emerging.

"I have been there six years, but what is the exciting thing for me at the club now is blokes like (Jamie) McNamara, (Sam) Butler, (Matt) Priddis," Sumich said.

And admitting disappointment at Judd's departure, Sumich said he felt the groin injury which hampered the former skipper this year had a bearing on his decision to leave Perth.

"He couldn't play his best footy, and it is amazing how the mind thinks. You look at the Brownlow votes, he probably wins the Brownlow if he was fully fit," Sumich said.

"Would he go then? I wouldn't have thought so."

As for Judd's destination in Melbourne, Sumich said he was not sure where that would be - and it would have no bearing on him staying or leaving the Eagles.

"I don't know where Chris wants to go at the moment, and they are things I don't really worry about," Sumich said.

"If Juddy wants to go to Carlton, he wants to go wherever - at the end of the day I hope West Coast get the best deal.

"I am not worried about Chris Judd any more in that sense."

Sumich would be ok in my books to be an assistant at WH...but I just don't think he will accept an assistant coaching job in Melbourne.

He has alot of offers back in Perth to consider.

For his own career, it's probably better that he does come to Melbourne.

By the looks of it, he has a couple of offers. It would make sense for him to take the chance ala Mark Harvey.

do u think with hardwick at the helm he will have a soft spot for his old team mates and possibly keep them for longer than this year eg mj, jj, bolton, heffernan?

No chance.Although keeping JJ will happen given he is contracted.

I don't think that Hardwick is the right choice for Essendon he has done nothing ( in requards to coaching ) and doesn't have any runs on the board just my opinion.

What does 'requards' mean? I think the word you're searching for is 'regard'.

Hardwick has 3 years as an assistant, he has done something in regard to coaching.

How exactly do you get runs on the board? I would've thought that Hawthorn's ladder position rising every year he's been at the club may suffice.

He is a little green, but if he's the right man for the job, he's the right man for the job.

Today's Hun describes Bomber as saying a meeting time hadn't been made, but indicating that a meeting would happen - but only after he had met with Geelong.

This is a great scenario - Thompson know first hand how fickle Geelong can be and that even a contract may not make his life reasonable - why not go for more money at a club that will take a long term approach. If not Hardwick is a great fallback.

Also in the press are reports that Sumich is looking closely at an assistants role at Carlton.

And if clubs didnt take chances on assistants who have not coached then the coaching pool would be very small.;)

the fact that Bomber has admitted to the press that he is meeting with us, in GF week when the "I have a GF to worry about" line would have worked absolutely beautifully and should really be the answer he gives, surely speaks volumes and volumes?

Watson has been very "fishy" about this on SEN, and who remembers Hird on the footy show, when Billy said Thompson was definitely staying, "How do you know Billy" ,but it was the smirk/body language that got me.

Just trying to put pieces together, but somethings brewing here folks. Undeniable.

Thanks for your concern. Do you have any sort of clue at all?? Appreciate everyone's entitled to their opinion, but this has surely gotta be a troll!

Hardwick's got a sensational track record.... tough, tenacious, uncompromising, aggressive, defensively-minded premiership player at 2 clubs. AA, Club B&F (ours), Twice International representative. He's experienced tremendous success as an Assistant through the rebuilding at Hawthorn... a few more coaching runs on the board than Kevin Sheedy had when he was appointed (Kev only had 1 year between ending playing and starting coaching!)

Tell me... how else do you get coaching runs on the board? You think we should appoint Neale Daniher or Dennis Pagan? Or maybe even bring back Barry Davis?

If the club reckons he ticks all the boxes in which we (as outsiders) can have no real insight, then I reckon he's a top choice.

If I was you, I'd be more worried about getting half-decent compensation for your departed skipper! :D
