Re: New Coach Rumours and Suggestions

Was listening to Swan on MMM before the game, and it got me thinking - do we have a committee (football) of any sort given this job (finding a coach) at all? I know the board has outsourced a company initially, but this outside company surely is just sorting the junk from the eventual shortlist?

Swan was saying that whatever the Committee puts to the board, they will accept (hence "giving away" Ratten as the coach) and they made a good point - how can a board, mostly there due to business accumen, make a call one way or another on a coach - what football knowledge do they have? They have to go with the football expertise they have put in place to find a coach - such a highly specialised position.

As far as I know, our board has outsourced (what an outsourced company can do I'll never know, but thats another story) will present a shortlist to the board, who will then take it from there. Are we in a position, structurally, to make this transition?

Listening to Swan, who seems to be one of the best at running a footy club, he seems to be building Carlton to a place like Collingwood, with a very solid off field football base. Just wondering where we sat in this regard?

We outsourced it to Stride Managemnet . They conduct the intial interviews. The reason we do it is that they have the personal to put together all the testing and profiles on canditdates. It saves the board from interviewing 10 to 15 people for the job and to be honest the board isnt fully qualifed in this area anyway. If you want a short list of the best canditdates then you hire a profesional firm who does that sort of work.
And on top of this yes the board does have a sub comitee for selecting the coach .Keven Egan, Peter Jackson,Andrew McKay, and a couple of others who have slipped my mind are on it and they will make a decsion and submit it to the board. It works pretty much the same way as everywhere else. Most clubs including a lot of non AFL clubs are using firms like Stride mamagement to hire coach's.It is there specialsied area.

I get the feeling it will be whoever he wants.

Travis Auld is the other one.

HIGHLY rated assistant coaches Chris Bond and Guy McKenna are believed to have missed out on the five-man shortlist for the Melbourne coaching job.

It is believed Bulldogs assistant Bond and Magpie deputy McKenna have been told by the Demons that they are out of the running. The pair have been considered the best-credentialled assistant coaches in the marketplace.

While those on the final shortlist were yet to be notified by Melbourne yesterday, the omission of Bond and McKenna enhances the prospects of Kevin Sheedy or Chris Connolly.

Both appear to certain to be on the shortlist, which is due to be announced tomorrow. Port Adelaide assistant Dean Bailey and Demons caretaker coach Mark Riley are believed to be two others on the list.

McKenna said he had spoken to Melbourne but did not confirm he was out of the running. "I have had a chat, presented to Melbourne during the week and they are in the process of finalising a shortlist and that is going to be announced on Monday," he said on SEN yesterday.

The five people on the shortlist will be asked to carry out a match simulation exercise next week where they must pick a Melbourne team against an opposition club and outline their game plan.

Sydney coach Paul Roos' revelation on Friday that John Longmire is earmarked to be his successor at the Swans has been confirmed by Longmire's agent Liam Pickering.

Pickering met the Swans hierarchy last week where a long-term blueprint was discussed. It is possible Longmire could be given more match-day duties as soon as next year.

Awesome we can take our time now.. Talk to Bomber Thompson and Williams

Re: New Coach Rumours and Suggestions

interesting article in today's age about dean bailey in the race for the melbourne job. has done a ross lyon and come from nowhere. he is up against sheedy and chris connelly there. could he be a smokey for the bombers job? is very highly regarded by mark williams as is quoted in the article. he was their backline coach from 02 - 04 when they finished on top and took over the midfield role when clarkson left. they have a pretty potent midfield and apparently the preso he gave to the melbourne board has thrown him ahead of bond and mckenna, so much so that they are now out of the race. very interesting read.

Re: Rumour about a replacement coach!!

lol i stopped reading after Hutchy said ;)

I always do as well.;) Still I think you lot need someone young like Dimma or Bond. Still interesting to see if they can get the choice right. Not having to make a decision like this for 27 years puts added pressure on those making the choice.

Sumich in running at Essendon

Greg Denham | August 24, 2007

WEST COAST assistant coach Peter Sumich acknowledged yesterday that he was in the running for the vacant senior position at Essendon.
Sumich, who denied he had spoken to Carlton before the Blues appointed Brett Ratten this week, did not make the final cut at Melbourne which yesterday began its serious process by again interviewing Kevin Sheedy.
The dual premiership full-forward said he had not spoken to Fremantle, but expected to be interviewed by Essendon in Melbourne as early as next week.
"We play Essendon next week and I won't be talking to them in Perth, so if it's not next week here in Melbourne it may be the week after or even the week after that," Sumich said.
Sumich, who kicked 514 goals for West Coast in a 150-game career, has been John Worsfold's right-hand man in the coaches' box for six seasons after a successful stint coaching South Fremantle in the WAFL.
Former Melbourne coach Neale Daniher was yesterday interviewed by Essendon.
"Melbourne of course is out, Fremantle looks settled (with Mark Harvey) and I've had initial talks with (consultants) Stride Management who are looking after the Essendon position," Sumich said.
Sumich said he would not leave the Eagles for an assistant coaching role, only if he were successful with a senior position.
Melbourne will restart its extensive interviews on Tuesday when Chris Connolly, Mark Riley, Dean Bailey and Damien Hardwick make their full presentations.
The Demons are expected to announce their new coach before Essendon, which may not happen until after the grand final.

Re: New Coach Rumours and Suggestions

I dont understand the conjecture, how hard is it to give a game plan when u have lloyd, lucas in the forward line. You buld a decent midfield that can win and carry the ball ala port adelaides and kick it in long and direct to our key forwards, you clear the forward line creating space for lloyd or lucas to go one one one with the likes of davey, lovett and jetta waiting on the half forward flanks ready to pounce on the crumbs. all those other useless midfielders can run back and help fill space down back giving support to fletch and michael.

how can a coach give a bad presentation really??? i dont know why Mckenna isnt given a crack, he is a dual premiership player he played down back and was an incredible reader of the play that helped the weagles thrust forward towards goal, at one stage it was thought whenever he touched the ball by foot is usually ended up a goal such was his ability to set up the correct play. He is now an assistant coach at one of the most disciplined sides in the comp, collingwoods list isnt fantastic but they win because they play towards discipline much like the eagles of the early 90's, although there side had a champion midfield.

Woosha and Roos were also backline players who can read the play and if you can ready the play during the game on the ground theres a good chance u can read the play from the coachs box.

I dont want Bond, what has he done as a player, what side has been sucesfull under his tuterage as an assistant coach???

I have a feeling however and its not news from the supercoach that we are going harder for bomber thompson, if they lose the grand final he will lose the job at geelong. I think horsborough's comments about our pursuit for williams was a smokescreen that would help alleviate the pressure off thompson and geelong, because in the end we want a victorian team to win the bloody thing again.

Re: New Coach Rumours and Suggestions

Guy McKenna is doing special comments on the Hawthorn Bulldogs game on the ABC this aftenoon.

At half time he was quizzed about being in the mix and what a presentation amounts to.

Made an interesting comment about how the most offensive team in the comp makes the grand final more often than the most defensive. But the most defensive has the better strike rate when it gets there. And that was the basis of his coaching philosophy.

Whether his theory stacks up, not sure, but he came across as a premiership coach in the making. Suppose they all do.

Coach interview

I can see there is a thread about romours and suggestions,
But I am wondering if anyone has heard any news or dates confirming anything about our new coach.

Who have Essendon interviewed etc..

Just seems like other teams are doing their 'job interviews' now and are getting some publicity..I haven't heard diddly about EFC.

Perhaps they are waiting for the season to be finished,
or maybe are keeping things under wraps?

Or maybe I've been hiding under a rock?

Thanks :thumbsu: :)

Re: Coach interview

The fact that their prime target BT (it would seem) is about to be involved in a finals campaign for another club, would put the brakes on the whole thing I'd suggest.

Re: Coach interview

I hope that we can get Bomber Thomson from Geelong but he probably wouldent come if they won the premiership but I think we will have our eye on him

FFS, don't make me want to throw up, that would be a ****ing joke.

The only one decent on that list is Dimma.

Purely based on his high level CV, Hardwick sounds fanatstic.

6 minor premierships knows what it takes to win week in/week out
2 premierships knows how to win the big one
Coached by Sheedy & Williams Experience with 2 great coaches
Hardnut We all want the side to be tough
With Clarkson from the start Seen/involved in successful redevelopment of a side
Essendon player Not necessary, but nice :)
Defender I rate defenders as coaches
