well if you're asking who's the best right now the essendon and richmond are light years ahead of carlton.

but essendon have 4 senior midfielders over 30 and while richmond have improved their list they've been stagnant for a long time. if you don't think there's a flag in store for essendon and richmond over the next 3-4 years then the answer is carlton.

That would make sense if Carlton had the clearly more impressive youth which just isn't the case.

That is dopey as all hell - and disingenuous garbage.

Essendon has four players in total over 30. Two of them (Stanton and Kelly) are half backs, Goddard is a utility, and ONE player in Watson is a pure midfielder.

Essendon's midfield is driven by Heppell, Merrett, Parish, Zaka, Langford...

Not to mention we have Laverde, Fantasia, Colyer, Walla, Francis - a list of talented youth your club could scarcely dream of.

"It's Carlton"

They're shit now. And if we're forecasting based solely on the current crop of youth at the club, they'll still be shit in the next 3-4 years.

Hell - you don't even have veterans of any repute to speak of. What, Murphy? Gibbs?? Thomas???

You couldn't compare your side favourably to any side in the AFL - it's an absolute shit truck.

When you talk of youth you look first at he spine. Carlton in this respect have the makings of a impressive lineup. Marchbank, Weitering, McKay, Krunow even Silvani are all young, good sizes and will develop as a group. Essendon has some good youth but all besides Francis are not big. Richmond has a spine right now, but they will need to act on it as they are older. We will get two first round draft picks and hopefully draft some quality talls.

Richmond have a good spine now? Rance & Riewoldt plus two average players in Astbury & Griffiths does not equate to a good spine.

Daniher and Hartley no good?

Astbury is better than average, he rarely gets goals kicked against him, I can't remember the last time a forward got hold of him. Rance is the best CHB going around, Riewoldt is top shelf and Griff is average but should improve this year without Vickery always getting first dibs (for some unknown reason). So 3/4 of a good spine.

Have to agree to disagree on Astbury. I don't see it at all and he is no longer young so isn't going to be adding intercept marking to his game any time soon. He's essentially a good honest trier like Sam Rowe.

geez are essendon fans up and about this week? you'd think by the way they carry on that they'd won a final in the facebook era

with the exception of heppell and colyer every one of those players you was eligible to play last year and you came last. and you want me to believe you're a flag contender without that senior contingent? The difference between last year and this year is that you have experienced leaders doing the heavy lifting to compliment the youth. i'm sure hawthorn said the same thing, 'we'll just ship out some senior players and bring in some talented youngsters and the wheel will keep on spinning' right?

You're not wrong we do have to transition four or so senior players out of the side in the coming seasons but what about the likes of Hooker, Hurley, Heppell and Colyer who are all still in the prime of their careers and have 4+ years of good footy left in them.

Beat carlton still last year

No - I want you to understand that your list is complete shit, and vastly inferior to Essendon - whether right now or thinking forward.

WE MAY NEVER LOSE AGAIN

yes the spine is there, no question. with everyone there it's a team that could do some good things. but modern footy is about depth and my assertion is that when that transition occurs you'll need to go backwards to replace the depth lost by losing those senior players. That transition can be quite seamless like what geelongs done, or it can be a rebuild in itself like it is with fremantle.

carlton right now is like slow cooked lamb shanks. they're gonna be in there for a while but boy is it gonna be good when it's finally ready
