Essendon. Will do better than most think this year.

Love how knee jerk this thread is.

I don't think even the most wildly optimistic of any of these sides sets of supporters think any of these sides are close to a flag.

At this current minute Essendon and Richmond look at least competitive, while Carlton are clearly in development mode

Yes, but if both are not able to actually challenge in their current shape then they will need to rebuild and are behind Carlton! Oh I need a crystal ball.

Essendon's young core is pretty ******* good now. We need to get some games into Francis and Laverde this year though.

Richmond are in an awkward position as was stated earlier, I wonder if trading out 25-28 year old stars at the end of this year and going hard rebuild is a good idea for them.

Carlton have finally started a methodical rebuild but just two years in I don't think they are even expecting to climb the ladder this year. Nail this draft and they will be hoping for a rise over the next few years. Still probably 4 or 5 years away from finals, maybe 1 year earlier at best.

I think Essendon is in the best position, but we may find that by the time our young core is ready to go to prelims we lose a lot from Watson, Kelly and Goddard leaving. Best chance is if we pick up a FA gem like Martin at the end of the year, especially if we can win one final this year.

I also think it will be a while before you can judge Essendon. Perhaps last night's win wasn't so good and Hawthorn is sliding more than most expect. We have Brisbane and Carlton in the next two games. As both are likely bottom 4 teams we probably can't take much out of those results either.

I am more confident in Essendon than the other two from 2018 onwards, doesn't mean they will do anything significant in the finals though.
Good grief, trade out your 25-28 years olds?! The cycle gets shorter and shorter!

The answer is obviously Richmond for the next 3 years that Rance and Riewoldt are in their pomp. Only hitting the draft next year for KPPs is a big issue though, they'd have to be at Weitering level to contribute immediately.

This is why I was so angry at the club for letting GWS pay for Deledio only at the end of this year.

5 year time frame, EFC or Carlton, hard to pick that far out

This is not a pot at Essendon, more that round one cannot be a measure of what is to come, but Hawthorn at crucial moments in that game we dreadful. How many dropped marks and missed un contested handballs can players make. Rioli decides with an open forward line to kick for touch on the wing. Yes Essendon applied pressure but this is a side that goes into finals footy thriving on that pressure. Burgoine had his worst game since under 12's.
Besides all three are in the bottom half of the ladder at this stage, so many good sides above them.

Wrong.

Hate to say it but Essendon have every chance in the next couple of years. Got their list in order (gifted #1 pick also remember o_O), and now have a hungry group of senior players. Plus guys like Goddard and Zaharakis will be jumping out of their skins to play with some talent around them.

Bad timing with the GWS and Dogs set to dominate but replace the older guys and they will be competing.

Richmond will surprise a lot this year but a lot needs to go right to pinch a flag, could have a few years of top 4 finishes though.

Carlton way way off.

I think they are going to be passed in the next few years. As good as Kelly and Goddard are I think having both in defense costs us run. Stanton will be replaced. Watson is the only one who is replacable. Having said that this year his role may be to draw the tag and let Heppell and Zerrett shine.

Prestia and Caddy make a difference to your side now. I think it is about time we count players like that as young players. Both will be good contributers for more than 5 years. Is Conca still playing?
Yes Conca has finally got on the park. Played half back, rebounded well, 450m gained (4th highest on ground), used the ball well and is a hard tackler, thanks for the interest....

Good time to revisit this now that a new season has started.

Right now, we're probably the closest, but I like what Carlton are doing under Bolton, and I can see them following a similar trajectory to Hawthorn 2005-2008.
****in LOL.

Richmond aren't winning a flag.
There should be a LOL button...

Pressure will be back on Hardwick if they lose to the Pies.
Well yeah. The pressure is on all coaches who had a shite year last. But it's one game in so far, so there is no real pressure on anyone just yet, and besides the Pies are going in to this game playing pretty well, so if we lose (unless we lose badly) that's footy. The only thing we Tiger supporters have been happy with this year so far is Hardwick and the coaching panel, because we didn't play ring a ring a rosie with the footy last week. Nothing else to go on really after just one round. And Essendon shouldn't get to cocky about beating the Hawks, they we dreadful last weekend.

Don't confuse cockiness with happiness - no one with any sense is having delusions of grandeur about Essendon; I think at best many of us think finals are a decent possibility.

It's more a smug sense of satisfaction that the deep holes in Hawthorns list have been exposed for all to see.

To add to this, None of us trust the team/club enough yet in terms of consistency, We are all worried about dropping this weeks game to the lions.

I think we've been pretty realistic about where we stand.

Be just like us to drop this weeks game.

Very Essendon thing to do.

well if you're asking who's the best right now the essendon and richmond are light years ahead of carlton.

but essendon have 4 senior midfielders over 30 and while richmond have improved their list they've been stagnant for a long time. if you don't think there's a flag in store for essendon and richmond over the next 3-4 years then the answer is carlton.
