With Jack Martin last year and Williams this year, Carlton are becoming the new Essendon.

Big club who hasn't won a final in several years, fail to make/win a final in the current year, recruit the big-name in the offseason, win trade week, don't win a final the following year, rinse and repeat.

It is very, very funny to see some 30 years on with drafts and equalisations and the like, the big clubs who found success before that era still living by the "recruit the best players and we'll win" method of modern footy.

I like the moves from Carlton. They’ve had ten top 20 picks in the last five years and added two more through trades (Setterfield, Kennedy). It’s time for them to add more experienced talent to help Cripps now, not sure you can keep going back to the draft year after year. The best thing for them with Martin and Williams is they’ve added two guys who would be in their best 5-10 players with five years left of their best footy ahead of them, without losing any draft assets.

They’re free to choose where they go for their offseason however they will not be able to stay at the hotels paid for by the AFL. They’ll have to cover those costs themselves.
