How is Allir Allir allowed back on the ground after being knocked out cold?

The AFL needs independent doctors to rule on concussions. Team doctors cannot be trusted.

Weird round. All of the favorites have lost so far this weekend. Tigers, Hawks and Eagles all capable of winning their games.

This is called the fencing response. It’s a form of abnormal posturing that’s a sign of a concussion.

They have priors in this as well. They’d be lucky if they don’t get a big fine and think they might be forced to have a change in doctors.

Will renew the call for the AFL to have independent doctors making the call on concussion incidents. You’d hope we were at the stage where clubs would care more about the players than the match situation but we’re clearly not at that point still.

It will come down to whether there is enough industrial or legal pressure.
The AFL won't do it purely out of concern for the players' long term health and welfare. If they really felt that way it would have happened years ago.

The AFL will respond if the AFLPA take a stronger stand, perhaps threatening industrial action. Or if they suddenly find themselves with a raft of negligence lawsuits from damaged past players.

Concerted media pressure might also help. However while we have commentators declaring "the bump is dead" any time a rule or interpretation change is in the wind that seems unlikely.

Maybe the bump in its traditional form does have to die. Maybe we do need to refashion (but not eliminate) some of the contact aspects of the game to achieve a reduction in the number of concussions, while still acknowledging that some accidental concussions can never be eliminated. I suspect brain injuries have probably always been in the sport but were publicised far less in past eras than they are now.

I feel that as each generation passes the players get stronger, heavier and faster so the impact of collisions is commensurately greater than it was say 50 years ago. I don't have data either way on this, but it does seem a logical conclusion.

Sure, the traditionalists (I'm one) won't like any change to the way the game is played. But what's the brain health of our young sportsmen and sportswomen - maybe our own kids - worth to us? For example how about setting and working towards a target of a 50% reduction in concussions? And reporting on it as a KPI of the AFL.

Here we are lamenting our habit of throwing massive leads. Saints went into QT winning 56-19, have now hit 3QT at 89-78, with the Hawks having all the momentum. At least we've been throwing against quality opposition, the Saints are doing it against one of the worst teams in the competition

Saints are shit but they're a game clear of us after today...
