Watch the bulldogs take the air out of the weekend by losing to the hawks in tassie.
It's amazing how little criticism they've received this year despite their drop down the ladder.

Absolute protected species club.

I have some mixed feelings about the Clarkson move to North.

Firstly, I think it is a great move. Back to where he played is a good story. Also really good for North.

From the Clarkson perspective he takes over his old club, while they are on their knees. If he lifts them up and makes them successful, his standing as a coach will be assured forever. More so than if he did the same with GWS or Essendon. You can be certain the VFL will be throwing priority picks his way to help him re-build the team.

From the North Melbourne perspective it gives them some credibility which is great. They desperately needed something.

From a competition perspective it's probably a bad move. There are clearly too many teams in Victoria and North looked like the weakest and first to be removed. Now they will probably be strengthened.

From a Tasmanian team perspective I also think it's a bad move. Will Clarkson still be in favour of a Tasmanian team?

From a Crows supporters perspective, it's good news that poor old Port will be stuck with Ken in 2023. Will be great when they get an easy first 6 rounds and then will sign him back up. Classic.
Of course North will not trade JHF under any circumstances now, so there is that as well.

Like I said - mixed feelings.

Very much sounds like a "we can't sack him right now because it's too close to the game, but after that he's done"

I hope the players put in a big effort for him, will be a tough game against the Tigers but the players owe him a bit

Hawthorn nearly merged in the 90s.

For financial reasons only. They won the flag in 1991 and played finals the year the merger was being floated (1996). Pretty sure when Clarko got there 10 years later he wasn't managing accounts payable.

Rutten to speak with the media shortly.

If he resigns, you would imagine he has been promised a significant payout (similar terms to those if he was sacked)

1996 was for financial reasons not onfield performance. They made finals in 1991 (Premiers), 1992, 1993, 1994, 1996.

Hawthorn then made a Preliminary Final in 2001.

Ok this is Hawthorn’s record from 1999.

1999 - 9th
2000 - 6th (after finals)
2001 - 4th (after finals)
2002 - 10th
2003 - 9th
2004 - 15th then Clarkson took over in 2005

Draft wise (players of note)

2001 - Luke Hodge
2003 - Trent Croad
2004 - Jarryd Roughead (PP -2), Lance Franklin (5), Jordan Lewis (7)
2005 - Grant Birchall (14) Xavier Ellis (PP - 3)

North Melbourne are a totally different story.

I don't really know the history here.

But are you saying the Hawthorn was given priority pick 2 in 2004, after only 2 years not making finals and finishing 10th and 9th?

And another priority pick 3 in 2005 after only the third year not making finals?

Yes I am.

The PP (Luke Hodge) in 2001 was actually Fremantle’s but Fremantle traded it to Hawthorn in exchange for Trent Croad I believe. Fremantle finished bottom in 2001 (2 wins) after finished 12th in 2000 (8 wins).

Back in those days they gave PP out like candy.
