Channel 7 newsbreaker Tom Browne dodged a bullet by knocking back an approach from Sportsbet to feature in a viral ad which has caused a stir through the media world.

Browne was an obvious choice to feature in the spoof video given his polarising nature on social media but he knocked back the four figure sum on offer which in hindsight was a masterstroke.

For those who haven‘t seen the ad – it has had 1.3 million views – the betting company did a mock AFL Journo Tribunal featuring Channel 9 newsreader Tony Jones, afl.com.au writer Damian Barrett, SEN‘s Kane Cornes and Age reporter Sam McClure.

On Monday night the ABC program Media Watch came off the long run, sizing up the journos for promoting the gambling giant given a couple of them in particular had previously made anti-gambling statements.

Media Watch took great delight in making the link to Channel 9 given all four also came under the network’s expanding media umbrella in different guises

4 figures? Is that all? WTF.

My Final Top 8
1. Brisbane
2. Fremantle
3. Carlton
4. Melbourne
5. Geelong
6. Sydney
7. St Kilda
8. Richmond

Port wont make it. Port have the 15th ranked attack meaning they simply cant kick match winning scores. Hinkley is defending games to death but really, that strategy wont stop the big scoring sides from kicking decent scores. Even the Crows have a better attack.

Not hard to create a prediction where a side gets to 13-9 and misses out on finals this year. Could be very tight at the top.

I end up with:

1. Brisbane
2. Geelong
3. Sydney
4. Melbourne
5. St Kilda
6. Fremantle
7. Carlton
8. Richmond

Between GC, Collingwood, Bulldogs, Us, GWS, Port and Hawthorn there's an unusually high pile of adequate to meh without being horrendous.

Would be rough if we go 9-1 from here on only to miss!

You can rule out anyone below the Suns. It's between them, Collingwood, Bulldogs and Richmond for the final spot.

I think the real shocker results are about to start coming thick and fast. Injuries, long seasons, short breaks, older lists, poorly and well timed form peaks all start coming into effect about now. They always do!

I've done these ladder predictors in the past after the bye round, and the teams you expect to win out almost never do. And there's always a team or 2 that you predict to go around 50:50 or worse, but instead they go white hot and fly up the table.

If Port score more than they do, you could with some confidence suggest they could make a run. But when you look back at their wins,

Eagles: only managed to kick 18 goals in what was a witches hat exercise
St Kilda: had some horrendously bad kicking at goals that would have won them the match. Were boss team all game.
Bulldogs: Legit win where the dogs cant overly claim injuries. Missing Bont didnt help but wouldn't have made a difference.
North: lol
Essendon: lol

Not one of their wins resembles anything close to an impressive win. In fact, most of them were gifts. Richmond showed where Port is at. Port defended the game to death and almost stole it but they simply didn't have the gear to go with Richmond in the dying stages and Richmond were 9th or 10th going into that game. You can't honestly state with any confidence that type of game Port brung will beat Sydney. Let alone Gold Coast then Fremantle. Can only lose two more games for the year to make finals. It may even be 14 wins to get in this year because of West Coast, Essendon and North.

Gawn out for 5 weeks! Misses the game against us in 3 weeks time.

I wonder if Jackson will play sole ruck?
Expect they will bring back someone like McDonald as backup ruckman as Jackson becomes the main ruckman.

The AFL wants to increase the soft cap by $500,000 for next season to help boost football department staff levels.

The league told a meeting of club chief executives on Wednesday the soft cap would likely increase to about $7 million (plus a separate $700,000 welfare provision) per club for 2023.

Clubs would be permitted to spend the extra money on staff such as coaches, physios or medicos or other personnel related to the football program.

The league argued the economic impacts of the pandemic was the main reason for the heavy reduction which saw clubs’ soft cap cut from $9.7 million to about $6.2 million in 2020.
