You draft elite midfielders first is what I’m saying.
You always draft best available talent with your early pick first, who would you have drafted instead of Thilthorpe, McDonald (who we were also linked to) or Rachele (who was mainly a small forward but "luckily" for us also played midfield and looks like he can develop into that elite midfielder).

Remember disagreeing with you re: the potency of the Dees’ forward line

I was wrong, they’ve look super efficient in their forward line this year and tonight
Missing their leading goal kicker too.

Is Fitsch injured?

I wouldn't call gun KPD and ruckmen as "foot soldiers" and they rarely leave or traded even as FA. Jackson did but he already won a premiership and then got offer big money to go home.

McAsey the gun KPD

Has an AFL club ever sacked, or not extended a coach who played Finals?

Ken Hinkley is a career coach, and not old enough to retire. The notion of a hand over to Josh Carr is a fairy tale . No way he has agreed to that

They make Finals, he will coach till 2026.

Pretty sure Grant Thomas was sacked for Ross Lyon after St Kilda made top 4.

McAsey the gun KPD
Possibly would have been if he didn't get drafted interstate, we will never know but clearly he didn't have the desire to be a professional footballer after being drafted here. Apparently, was Talia like defender who can lock down KPF and intercept but a better kick and had the ability to play both ends. You do know there are "gun" midfielders drafted who are also bust as well.

Agreed. Not since I saw a 19/20 year old Buckley and Dangerfield have I seen a kid who is a certainty to be a superstar midfielder. In 2 years JHF, Rozee and Butters will be an elite midfield combination for 6 to 8 years.

I give myself a migraine every time I think that Ogilvie is still at the club making key decisions.

In regards to landing JHF it was always an almost impossible task. People forget that JHF and his management reached out to Port. Like no recruiting was done.

Don't we need both?

We've been there - elite midfield in the 2000s but not a strong forward line and fell short. Then we had a very strong forward line but not a strong midfield in the 2010s and fell short (would have been different had Danger stayed).

Elite mids are much sooner to hit their peak than elite forwards so if we draft e-mids first, we end up wasting several years before the e-forwards catch up.

It was fortunate (or unfortunate) the year we bottomed out Thilly was available and that draft crop wasn't strong in mids available that year. Other years we were near bottom we didn't have the picks to get the elite seeming mids.

OTOH, we now have Rankine, Rachele, Soligo, Berry, Laird, Schoenberg, Pedlar, Dawson, Taylor (projecting very high). Then there are hints Nankervis, Dowling and Bond could have high ceiling potential as well.

If all these guys come on, we could have a very strong and deep midfield.

None of these are elite midfielders, you surely have the chance of getting one by drafting one high up the chart.

I’m sticking with my “the dees are the ones to beat this year”..

They are just relentless.

Looks like they have that 2021 hunger back.
They certainly have the best turbo mode... to pile on goals in quick time.

Imagine if North had accepted our reputed offer for pick 1 - it would have cost us Rachele and Soligo in 2021, Dowling and Bond in 2022, and our r1 pick this year (for Rankine) for JHF.

Given the way JHF seems so intent on getting to the PAPs, we could be having all sorts of drama right now with him trying to get to the PAPs that North had last year.
