Hawthorn racism review: Lions considering Chris Fagan’s future

Former Hawks staffer and now Lions coach Chris Fagan has been devastated and blindsided by the damning revelations of Hawthorn’s racism review as the club considers his future.

Brisbane is considering whether to temporarily stand down senior coach Chris Fagan pending the results of an investigation into allegations of treatment of Indigenous players at Hawthorn.
Former Hawks staffer Fagan has been devastated and blindsided by the allegations and he has told he has no knowledge of the meetings that have been alleged by former Hawthorn indigenous players.

Those allegations include a player being told he and his partner should terminate a pregnancy.

But as the Lions work through the fallout the Herald Sun understands one possibility is standing him down until the investigation is complete and the findings returned.

The AFLPA has called for a full and independent inquiry into the allegations which concern Hawthorn staffers and coaches.

Fagan worked at Hawthorn from 2008-2016. He was the head of development and coaching between 2008-2013 and football boss from 2013-2016.

The Lions are yet to come to an official position on Wednesday as the AFL world responds with shock and dismay to the allegations contained in an ABC report.

Article mentions ‘a group of coaches’ and ‘club officials’, perhaps there are more high profile names to come?

If even a fraction of what has been reported is true it's absolutely disgusting. And I'm not naive enough to think this was unique to Hawthorn either. It's a cancer in the entire football industry. I just hope (but doubt) that this kind of shit is gone now, and those responsible get what is coming to them.

They aren't allegations. They are findings of an investigation.

Where are you getting this from?

I've only looked back on the article and a quick google, but all I can find is mention of the review containing allegations. These are generally being levelled as allegations not findings(I'm not sure that is even the function of the investigation. Is it?).

Sounds semantic but there is a big difference between gathering evidence and passing judgement/handing down findings.

Hawthorn racism review: Luke Hodge ‘deeply shocked’ as AFL prepares to investigate allegations

The AFL has confirmed it will hold an independent, externally-run investigation into damning allegations surrounding Hawthorn and key football figures.
League boss Gillon McLachlan announced that a four-person panel, led by an eminent Kings Counsel, would be confirmed in the next 24 hours.

Victorian Minister for Sport Steve Dimopoulos said he had spoken with AFL chief executive Gillon McLachlan in the wake of the reports, which he described as “extraordinarily serious allegations”.

“I feel for everybody involved,” Dimopoulos said.

“I’ve spoken to the AFL and they will investigate them thoroughly and comprehensively, and that’s exactly what should happen - both Hawthorn and the AFL.”

Dimopoulos stopped short of calling for an independent review.

“I’m not going to tell the AFL how to manage its affairs, other than to say they are extraordinarily serious allegations … I am pleased that (McLachlan) clearly has stated they are serious,” he said.

“They will investigate as they see appropriate with all the stakeholders the AFL will meet.”

McLachlan and the league’s general manager of policy and social inclusion Tanya Hosch will address the media shortly.

No Hawthorn commissioned the investigation.

AFL boss Gillon McLachlan announces league won’t release bombshell

AFL boss Gillon McLachlan says the league will not be releasing the bombshell report detailing allegations of mistreatment of Indigenous players at the Hawthorn Football Club.
The shocking report, commissioned by the Hawks, was given to the AFL integrity department two weeks ago, the league has confirmed.

McLachlan was an hour late in fronting the press for a scheduled media opportunity on Wednesday morning as the league continues to reel from the allegations.

The outgoing boss said the league is now establishing a four-person independent panel to further investigate the allegations included in the report.

He said the make up of the panel will include a King’s Counsel and will represent people of a culturally diverse background.

Among the revelations included in McLachlan’s press conference, it was suggested the immediate futures of North Melbourne coach Alastair Clarkson and Brisbane Lions coach Chris Fagan will be announced later on Wednesday.

McLachlan said the report and a follow-up investigation from ABC Sport was a “challenging, harrowing and disturbing read”.

He said the wellbeing of the women and players mentioned in the report were the league’s top priority.

Football commentators on Wednesday morning reacted with widespread calls for former Hawthorn coach Clarkson to stand aside following the release of a bombshell report surrounding allegations of shocking mistreatment of Indigenous players.

The external review alleges four-time premiership coach Clarkson and former assistant Chris Fagan, who is now the coach of the Brisbane Lions, were involved in some of the cases.

Football journalist Jay Clark told Triple M on Wednesday the report was commissioned as a result of complaints previously made by former Hawks star Cyril Rioli before he left the club and retired prematurely in 2018.

Robbo didn't miss us in his article but..

"You don’t want to believe it’s true.

To demand an abortion to aid a player’s career is beyond comprehension.

Fagan and Clarkson are decent people, family loving people.

Yeah, they are determined and driven, and these allegations will rock them to their core.

There will be context and/or denials, but - if true - not sure there’s any imaginable context that places human life above playing football.

The AFL has no choice.

Neither does North Melbourne.

Franky, if true, neither does Clarkson and Fagan.

They must step down today.

This is a time for action from the AFL. Not words. Not promises. Not backslapping about how inclusive football is.

This is yet another example of the intergenerational trauma suffered by Indigenous players.

Eddie Betts revealed the horrors of the Adelaide camp where white people told black people how to think, what to say and banned them from the leadership program.

There was also the well-documented racism at Collingwood.

In both those scenarios, no one was punished by the AFL."

In this case, the AFL must finally take a stand, be the leaders they say they are.

Not only is the whole football world looking at the AFL, so too, is the sporting world.

This story will sweep the globe, just as the Essendon supplement saga did.

These allegations are much, much worse.

That was about needles.

This is reportedly about an unborn child.

If true, the legacies of high-profile people will be destroyed fore
ver.
That sounds wildly misleading. Told them what to think and say? Was that just to the Indigenous players or tot the whole group. there is a vast difference. Did we BAN Indigenous players from the leadership group? Was that an actual planned decision?

Watch the Vic media try to smash us along with Hawthorn.

All these reports filtering out when it slips from the AFL's fingers is concerning.

There needs to be independent reports commissioned for ALL clubs, and AFL House. No more hiding. No more piecemeal information and sweeping under the rug. Total transparency in respect of every single club and the AFL.

It's not that we came out and said "right, all black people at the club, here's how to think and speak and also you're banned from the leadership group." But when a black person did speak out about the camp he was asked to speak about it in a different manner, and when he refused he was banned from the leadership group.

We deserve to get smashed for it, but not nearly to the same degree as Hawthorn. We made a bad decision to host the camp, and then made it significantly worse by trying to cover it up. But Hawthorn appears to have had a standing policy in place to shepherd young indigenous players out of relationships and especially out of fatherhood, seemingly out of a belief that they are incapable of handling AFL football and family commitments simultaneously. That's genuinely monstrous.

I'm in shock, I can't believe in this day and age we have white men in positions of power telling young indigenous men to abandon their family and then on-top of that force them to tell their partner to abort a child for the sake of a career.

This is wildly horrific news, unbelievably disturbing that this was happening inside the walls of an AFL club.

Why? What was the motivation, to just out of the blue, commission this

I can only assume that they learned this was coming out one way or another and decided to get on the front foot.

At the moment the people in charge at the time are implicated. If the club is seen to be covering it up, then the current people are implicated as well.

Seems Victorian Government don't want a bar of it. I would have thought they'd consider themselves "stakeholders".

If true, these allegations expose a disturbing underbelly in professional football, where tyrannical leaders believe they have the power to determine life and death.

The flinch reaction is not to believe it’s true.

Obviously the indigenous aspect adds another many layers of depravity, but imagine telling anyone that regardless of race

In what world would you ever speak to another human like that, even before accounting for particular sensitivities or vulnerabilities.

I think so. Or maybe just in the sense of Public Officers abusing power.

Should be some kind of OHSW law they broke.

Not only that, but a vulnerable teenager, just starting adulthood, desperate to establish an AFL career that could genuinely change their life. And being told to them by their senior coach and player manager, people they would respect immensely and believe they need to trust implicitly to build their career.

The idea of someone with that kind of power imbalance demanding that you force your partner to abort their child, and then never speak to them again, or else your AFL career might just be over... it makes me so angry.
