That Clarkson et al have continued on their merry way right up till recently, it makes me think they feel they are armour plated.

Knowing this was about to drop, how could any decent person accept a position as head coach, for example, what, 2 weeks ago?...with clear conscience?

Is there any grasping-at-straws excuse or explanation where the coaches believe any of this was ok?
Yep.

Someone said I was a bit sharpish saying that the Murdoch press and the AFL have said nothing.

The AFL have had this report for TWO WEEKS! And they allow Fagan to continue and Clarkson to be appointed. Were they hoping no-one would find out?

It takes the ABC to get wind of the story and publish before anyone says anything!

Gill has to go

So Fagan has denied it.

What happens if none of this is provable?
Has he?

"The Brisbane Lions are aware Senior Coach Chris Fagan will work with the AFL on an investigation into allegations concerning historical events at the Hawthorn Football Club, where he was a former employee," the Lions said.

"Chris supports and welcomes the investigation. He was not consulted during the Hawthorn sponsored review and looks forward to the opportunity to be heard as part of the AFL investigation.

"The Brisbane Lions and Chris have mutually agreed that he will take a leave of absence from the Club so he can fully cooperate in the investigation.

"As the matters are now with the AFL Integrity Unit, the Brisbane Lions won’t make any further comment at this stage."

No denial there.

I've been waiting for something big since he made his sudden retirement announcement. Wonder if this was it.

I've missed something here - so, Hawthorn commissioned an external investigation, which has now reported. My question is - why did they commission the investigation in the first place? Had there been allegations / accusations made?

I think it arises from Caroline Wilson's reporting on Cyril Rioli

I thought I read that he has in this thread. I might be mistaken.

There is now an AFL investigation. Presumably, they will do a proper job and ensure that everyone has a chance to tell their stories.
Regarding your question, if the reactions on here are any guide, hangings will occur regardless of proof.

Apparently Jeff Kennet suggested it after his issue with Rioli last year.

You need to understand, the hawthorn review did not contain specifics. Gil said today that they learned more today from the ABC article which did contain specifics.

As much as North have been collateral damage in this, it may actually end up saving them in the long run.

I would not be surprised if Hawthorn end up vacating a licence for a Tasmanian team out of this and the Hawks brand being absorbed somewhere.

Nah. They might get Essendoned (i.e rightfully punished significantly) at worse, but they've got way too much money/power for anything close to that drastic.

This is much more aligned with our camp than it is with the Essendon drug issue

I would be shocked if the club is punished at all - Fagan, Clarkson and Burt will likely be the casualties (and rightly so) in a similar manner to Burton, Pike etc from us

They may find themselves more on the outer than those guys have though

The allegations are of course disgusting.

But isnt it also disgusting there are like 800 AFL "accredited" journos and once again it took someone outside this echo chamber to write the story.

Makes you wonder how many stories are hidden due to the AFL's tyrannical control over how the game is reported
also consider the massive resources available to the AFL and their Integrity Unit? What have they been doing for years?
How is it that it takes an independent journalist to uncover this?
The AFL and Integrity Unit also failed dismally in the Essendon drugs scandal.
Heads need to roll at AFL house, this sort of disgraceful, and seemingly systemic issues should not have been too difficult to detect. Who knew about this? And if they didn’t why not?

Honest question what would you do if you were North?

You've just landed the highest profile coach in the game and now this happens, would you get rid of Clarkson or just ride the storm and stick by Clarkson even if he gets suspended for a year or two?

Sack him and move on, learn from the AFC and don't die the death of a thousand cuts

A club could invade Poland and the AFL Integrity Unit would still give it the tick of approval.

I think if he gets suspended you sack him and get another coach

If the investigation clears him it would put up a lot of question marks

There will obviously be more details that arise, but Fagan could have very well been a Yes Man who was too afraid to stand up to Clarkson. It would've been nice if someone did if they really felt as appalled as we are on here.

It is also possible that people who have done terrible things in the past, no longer do those terrible things. Or people that have held harmful or racist views in the past have been educated, and no longer hold those views.

They wouldve commissioned the “external investigation” so they can control the narrative…

Rather than risk a real external investigation which they have absolutely no control whatsoever over..

Unfortunately the results of their own commissioned investigation have been so damning an real external one is now gonna be held..

Which will probably delve even deeper and expose even further disgraceful and damaging information!

If that is the case, it is a pretty big hole in the report.

Procedural fairness 101 is allowing a person the opportunity to respond to allegations that have been made against them.
Clarkson saying the same thing just now
