Only if eveyone's kicking was similar. That would have been awesome
I was in the Gili Islands that day on a months surfing trip through Indo , my mum and brother went .
I still kinda regret not going
Can we blame the surface conditions for Fyfes bad kicking ?
It still amazes me how so much of this is kept under wraps until you hear stories from players or their families - this wouldn't be making headlines if it was say Taj Woewoedin or Daniel Turner or had happened in a VFL game/training.Melbourne star Petracca undergoes surgery after series of injuries

How the hell could the Melbourne doctors allow him back on the ground?
I still have the suspicion that player welfare and how doctors remain independent in high pressure, win at all cost scenarios, is a murky area for the AFL.
Ive been to the majority of Freo games at the G since and not one has come close to the conditions on GF day 2013. The first quarter especially the wind was intense and sitting behind fyfes kicks at the other end of the ground didnt give him much chance of kicking them at the time.Nah, the conditions were terrible that day with the wind swirling around. Our lack of familiarity with the ground and the weather conditions was a major factor. Plus the nerves.
That is mind blowing that they even contemplated putting him back on the field. Regardless if they knew - or didn’t know - the extent of the damage, he was clearly in severe pain and distress. No doubt he would have said he’s right to go, but the club medicos should have over ruled. Gobsmacking.Melbourne star Petracca undergoes surgery after series of injuries

There were multiple reasons why we didn't play well in the GF and the ground conditions were a factor. I was there and the wind was strong and swirling around. It was raining overnight and the morning before the game. I think a quarter of the team had played either 0,1 or 2 games at the MCG in their life. I remember seing a replay (on the big screen?) of Tendai's foot slipping about 20cm when he kicked our first goal. That would have been awesome

Turn it up its a open shut case of why you don't play on with a rib injury with obvious potential to include a fracture. It's the doctors job to overrule the code when required.
Yes that can happen, but not in this case where there was ample vision of him being kneed squarely in the ribs then extended vision of him in agony in the hands of the trainers. Did the Doc Arsène Wenger all that? There are multiple guys in just our current squad playing with sore impact injuries in the chest, they can't tell whether they are broken by looking at them and the players hide their reactions when they get poked.
But you're spot on that there's big risks.

Doctors have this great method of detecting something is wrong internally without X-rays by pressing on the affected area and looking to see if you wince or scream in pain.I don't think it's a reliable metric to use the player's reactions to measure severity, I don't trust them either way.
I do think it's valid for the club doctor to be able to signal to the reserve umpire on the bench that he/she requests a stoppage of play, that gets radioed to the field umpires and next stoppage they hold play for the doctor to make an assessment.
Works for all the injuries, but particularly the head injuries where they find it harder to lie to the doctor. That thumbs up from Rowan Marshall was a terrible indicator after his knee to the head.

One thing I can say about Freo this year, if there is any doubt, the player is taken off. Can’t believe there’s even a discussion on whether he should have been on the field for a whole quarter.
I get that he’s brave to say I’m going back on, but after 1 minute you could see he couldn’t run, was hunched over most of the time, protected his side but the most obvious was how pale & ill he looked.
He should have been taken off within minutes for his own health & again it looks very poorly on Melbournes current cultural standards.
