North Melbourne Priority Pick 2021

I agree that the recruitment method is vital, and I don't want to come across as argumentative.

Although personally I'd like to see no incentives for finishing in last place. It should be the opposite; rewarded highly for wins only. The current draft system is workable, but priority picks and points etc is just unnecessarily complicated.
Fair enough apologies for being snarky but I guess, watching the club week in and week out for years I don’t see the any no. 1 pick as a reward as such nor do I think the “did this to ourselves” thing is completely accurate.

I do think our current situation is due to trying to remain competitive for 20 years, going back to the laidley years, I’m not knocking it, it was necessary but going back to 2002-2016 (2016 the attempt 1 of the rebuild) we had something like 3 top 5 picks (wells, Hansen, Cunnington)
And maybe 5 picks in the 5-10 range, part of that was the recruiting of Thompson (2005) hay (2006), part of it was having mid 1st round picks pushed to mid seconds with the Gc/GWS drafts (being mid table really sucks there because you don’t get a shot at top picks nor do you really have the cattle to trade as your mid tier, nor are you insulated as a good side due to limited scope for a mid table improver .

The results we are seeing for north would have either happened now or maybe in two years had we re-signed some of those delistees, keep in mind we were going very poorly even with them in 2019/2020.

Whilst not perfect I don’t think there’s a better way to equalise the comp than the draft as it stands.

Re: PP I’ve said previously I’m not really sure they are a good thing but teams have received them in the past basically the only sides that haven’t are Geelong/Freo/Adelaide (arguably they’d be close to qualifying by the “criteria” we’ve seen/north (currently) are the only teams that haven’t received some form of concession and whilst that isn’t an argument to having them now I do think it’s not as unfair as many are making it out to be.

I really like the idea that someone mentioned before of accessing future picks early by “buying” a pick with points from future drafts. Obviously that mechanism should only be opened in PP like circumstances but I like the creativity.

Don’t know why they abandoned the old 90’s system of PP’s in the first place.

IIRC a team had to get less than 10 wins in a consecutive 3 year period to get a PP.

Then the genius AFL COO of the late 90s Ian Collins changed the rule and reduced this period to one year , quickly after this the system got rorted.

It should revert back to something similar to the old system where there is a transparent formula that everyone understands, not this current undignified process where clubs have to beg for one.

I am more than happy with that system tbh

The Kangaroos are not expected to be granted an early priority pick, but have also asked the League to give them two extra rookie-list spots, which would allow them to re-contract some of their own players whilst also having enough vacant positions to target mature-age talent from around the competition.

AFL media doesn't think they'll get an early priority pick.

Shouldn't get more than the start of second round that Brisbane got after the Go Home Five episode. I'm ok with a couple of extra rookie spots, that doesn't hurt anybody. A lot of their trouble has been self inflicted

Well yeah cos he wanted 800k for like 5 years and his body is *ed. You guys should give Hurley a 5 year deal if you think trading Brown was a bad move.
What??? He's still playing and played 17 out of a possible 22 this year. I don't know how you justify his body was/is ****ed. Dan hannebury played something like 14 games for the Saints in 5 years, that a ****ed body.

What difference would it make?
Because **** the AFL.

And also in a business full of dickhead blokes who only have their job because of they who they know and how they take credit for other people's work Dr Hood deserves the credit for what she did.

Freo got a PP. just because they traded doesn’t mean it didn’t exist

Granted a future 2nd and a future 3rd which must be traded this year. Plus 2 additional rookie spots on the list.

Ha ha, may as well scrap the concept of priority picks. Which I am absolutely fine with.
Hopefully this is the standard going forward, should gc or gws, or anyone else, ever find themselves in a hole again.
Oh for the days when you could get a pre-draft priority pick because you had five wins two seasons after losing the grandfinal!

Future 2nd for Logue I assume
I guess, might have to play hardball and use future third which isn’t really fair but there isn’t a great deal to work with.

Which is fine. I’m sure the future second will be it. I hope they don’t throw the future third for Tucker but they probably will
