Gutting your club on purpose and then receiving high priority picks would have set a bad precedent. Got what they deserve

Yep. Would have just given every mid tier team the licence to do the same

If it was Collingwood in North’s situation it would have been five first round picks + a million dollars in extra cap space.

I think North have a pretty good future so I don’t mind them not getting a first round pikkie, let clarko work his magic and they’ll be good. Good outcome I think.

GCS package was bullshit.

Pretty happy with the results. I thought the AFL would tell us to go away after landing Clarko - especially given that he'll partially be paid outside the cap.
At least it is showing they finally finding some consistency in this space. I was half expecting some wild deviation from their last stance but it not too far from the value of two state league players to have access to. Which hard to replicate now the mid-season rookie draft is in place so two draft picks to trade is nice currency to assist in the trade period for a ready made player or two. The two extra rookie list spaces are nice too.
Does that last for two years or one before it has to be in line with other clubs?

Idiots still don't understand the reasons for and the big picture of the Gold Coast package, just no point going over it again, those that are too stupid to comprehend it first time still won't with repeats.

North got as much as they deserved for their own incompetent list management.

North are a minnow in the big pond, always have been, always will be and failed to take the offer of relocation when it was offered to get them out of that big pond. Just have to sink or swim now, Clarko the last hope for North in this new world, no miracle PP rescue packages for any club any more.

Cool.

Just when I was getting worried this thread was starting to lack nuance and good will, along comes Prince Charming here.

But we are entitled to extra picks. And if we decide we want some more next year, we'll take those too. When you're the top dog, you have to throw your weight around.

Will be interesting to see what the AFL does if North finish last again. They gave Brisbane a priority pick in 2016, and then denied an application for another pick in 2017 even though Brisbane finished last.

I think the picks themselves for North are fine. I do think the stipulation that they trade it is a bit unfair for North; I think they should do whatever they want with those picks. Given the AFL knew North were into Logue/Tucker, the stipulation essentially applies a trade value to certain players which seems a bit dodgy.

Which was obviously the right call, given the Lions finished second on the ladder and equal first on points only two seasons later. Clearly talent wasn't the issue.

Also the Lions finished last with 5 wins, North Melbourne had two this year.

I've been against Priority Picks throughout my time watching footy and this viewpoint hasn't changed one bit. What grates me and a lot of other North Melbourne fans is the statement made by the AFL.

'The assistance package has been designed to make North Melbourne more competitive sooner whilst also not penalising other clubs' draft positions, with the League keen to protect the integrity of this year's draft order.'

The AFL has never cared about penalising other clubs draft positions and has never cared about protecting the integrity of the draft order. On the contrary, every step the AFL has made previously has reduced the integrity of the draft order and penalised other clubs draft positions. Further, they seem happy to negatively effect the draft order for next year with these additional future draft picks. Every club finishing ahead of North next year (which will be most clubs) will be negatively affected by these additional picks.

I would have preferred the AFL to announce the end of Priority Picks for all clubs and if they were to provide assistance then it would be in other areas such as the soft cap. The AFL using integrity of the draft order and not penalising other clubs draft positions in their statement is what frustrates.

Gives them an avenue to trade for senior experienced fringe players, whilst not having to use their existing picks which is important North continue to bring more youth through the door... although like Carlton, it wont help if they cant develop the talent.

Yes, that all goes without saying. The picks are pathetic, was my point!

That's kind of the idea, I think. Good enough that they could be used as sweeteners or bundled as a package, but not good enough to basically gift North players.

Which is just them controlling the club from atop their ivory tower.

"They can't be trusted to run the club, make sure this is how they do it" AFL House

considering you had 5 more wins than us across a 3 year period you would hope so
Over a 3 year period yes. But over a five year period you see Carlton having 26 wins between 2014-2018 (0 finals). North had 33 wins between 2018-2022 (0 finals). I don't think the teams were in very different positions.

If you let North do it, you have to let the next club do it. North probably got a bit unlucky in that AFL has decided to draw the line now rather than years ago when everyone else was rorting the system lol

It is sad to see a proud organisation like North accept handouts. Genuinely never thought i'd see the day. They had such a strong shinboner spirit for so long. Good luck to them I suppose.

If only they could get exclusive access to all draft talent from a large geographical area or something. Maybe that is a handout that would be more palatable to opposition clubs :thumbsu:

The AFL love screwing the draft order so sons can get to their daddy's clubs or some NSW/QLD academy kid can stay home. Where was this concern about draft order integrity when Carlton, Collingwood, Hawthorn were raping them for priority picks? But yes, North getting help when we have won 9 games in 3 years is the problem? F me.

Not a fan of academies hey? Which is funny when you consider Noah Cumberland won Richmond games off his own boot this season and wouldn't have bene drafted without our academy. Own goal.

Kinda want us to tank now

Nah what do you mean? I think it's cool Brisbane, Sydney, GWS & Gold Coast are given special help that allow them to get an advantage over every other club :thumbsu:

You only get one accident of history, sorry Clarko.
