You should, that way you would maybe get the underlying point.

Which was - it is easy to suggest mergers (or folding, or relocation for that matter) when it is not your club involved.

How do you think North supporters would like being forced to merge? How do you think supporters of the Tassie side (I am one) would like being forced to not be a stand alone entity from the outset?

I'm sure you wouldn't like it being done to your club, but it's okay in your mind to be done to other clubs. Poor form.

Hence my post.
I'm sure he will be fine and swoop up the Tasmania membership

Dont move North to Tassy.

Take back Norths license, and re-issue another license to Tasmania. Problem solved

Ahh yes.

The "take back North's license" like they aren't part of the group who actually own the license :tearsofjoy: Genius' on here.

Who is "they"? The AFL commission? The same commission that can't do anything like that without the vote of the shareholders? I.e the AFL clubs?

If it was that easy, North would be on the GC already.

You basically need every current interstate club, as well as 6 Victorian clubs to vote in favour of this motion.

Good luck.

Not to mention you realise you would have to distribute North's fair share for license in the event they moved to another league? You can't just transfer it and all it's intrinsic value to Tasmania because you want to.

The NMFC is a legal entity and has an equity share in the AFL.

The knock on effect to something like this would be the sale of Marvel Stadium given it's the AFL's single largest capital asset at the moment.

For the same reason, the buy in cost for a license is in the hundreds of millions of game investment and infrastructure like stadiums and training resources for someone like the Tasmanian Govt. This is agreed by the other clubs, as compensation to dilute the current quantity of license holders.

It's actually a serious issue now with North. They are the worst last 100 game team in history, and next year isn't looking to be any better.
I think it's the best solution for the AFL, reasons being.
1. With an existing Melbourne and Tasmanian supporter base, this will help the new Tasmanian side with support and membership.
2. It will make the competition 18 teams.
3. It will allow the Tasmanian team to be more competitive from the get go, rather than having an under 20s team for the first couple of years. The addition of the good North players around the young kids will help the team immensely, and keep a better age profile.
4. The addition of Clarkson as a senior coach will be a bonus.
5. With there being less of a strain on the young kids in the draft going to Tasmania, it will help ensure any other teams at the bottom of the ladder can still get some decent talent in.

I think it's got to a point where this needs to be a serious conversation moving forward.
Cool post, would read again.

Why is all the heat being put on the head coach?

What have his support done to help him in the last couple of years?

The CEO and President still haven’t outlined a strong exit plan from Tasmania, outlining their long term vision and plan to achieve it. Membership has gone backwards, they can’t attract talent to their club and their biggest win off the field in the last 12 months has been signing LDU and Zuurhar to long term contracts and getting pick 3 for Mackay. Has LDU signed yet????

The best thing both Sonja and Jen have done was to FINALLY sack Thomas after multiple recurrences of bad behaviour and go cap in hand to get more draft assistance. Their list management is atrocious. Just because they get a plethora of picks, salary cap space and list spots doesn’t mean you waste it on guys like Pink, Shiels and Howe. Giving guys like Zuurhar a career contract is ok if you know they want to put in, not just cash out a pay cheque.

Theres no one there to challenge Clarko. He has recruited his own team and the CEO and Pres won’t utter a word to pull him into line when needed.

When the club is so rudderless you can’t go blaming the head coach. He can only do what he’s enabled to do.

They need help at the top to set the long term strategy and execute.

They need a list manager who knows what the plan for success is and have the foresight to action it.

They need a strong coaching group that will build a very young list up, knowing that success will take time and these are very much still early developmental years. Whether or not Clarko is the man to do this is a question within itself. But it’s not the solution to their bigger issues.

I agree with all you’re saying, however I still think there’s issues with what Clarkson is trying to do.

He seems to be trying to get them to play the same way he’s Hawks teams played, with elite field kicking and creative ball movement.

The problem is that:
A) I don’t know if he has the cattle to do that.
B) Is that game plan still sustainable in today’s footy? There’s been a significant decrease in average scores for amongst the top sides since that period, and teams have had to have more of a defensive focus.
C) Can you implement that sort of game plan successfully without first building a strong base of winning contested footy and defending well? I’m not sure.

Then there’s some of his other antics which are well documented.

The game had definitely appeared to have gone past him in his final years at the Hawks, what evidence do we have that it’s not the same at the Roos?

You don't have to be einstein to realise that there is too many sides in Melbourne. The merger with the Tasmanian team is never going to happen though as there is no way the State govt is going to fork out the $500K for a new stadium to have an uninspiring merged team play there. Contractually, I don't believe it can happen but a central point of the new Tasmanian State team is about State pride and you don't get that with a merged team.

Regarding, north they should have been made to relocate to the GC and could have played in north's colours been known as the northern kangaroos, and would have had their financial viability assured. When your playing 2 or 3 games a year in Hobart, why is it such a big issue to shift base and play on the GC with that type of deal. The GC and for that matter the GWS, should never have been given licences in non-traditional AFL areas without a relocation of a Melbourne team. I still think one of St Kilda or Melbourne should be made to relocate to western Sydney with the same deal that north would have got if they had relocated to the GC i.e. Sydney saints.

The competition would be the winner and so would AFL followers of the game, with the quality of players currently in the game probably at an all time low. The only losers in this scenario are the burnt on supporters of north who probably still want games played at Arden Street, the AFL who evaluate everything based on dollars in the immediate and the television rights owners who only value the AFL as a product.

Its not poor form either, its common sense. If a club were as uncompetitive as north after years of handouts, then the spotlight should be on them. I cannot recall Fitzroy ever getting the level of assistance that north have received, in fact they got just the opposite from the AFL who engineered for them to fold.

Why would North Melbourne members want to kill off their 155 year old football club and have their brand & identity consumed by the AFL’s Tassie franchise?

Would you like to see your club, the Crows merge with Port Adelaide? I bet you wouldn’t. So why would you wish for another club to merge? Easy for others to to be blasé about these things. But when push comes to shove, no members are going to vote their club out of existence

Secondly, let’s look at the other side of the equation… Why would Tasmanians set aside their love of Hawthorn, Carlton, Collingwood, Essendon, Richmond, St Kilda, etc, to barrack for a transplanted North Melbourne F.C.

Answer: Nobody, except for a few North fans already living in Tassie

What would be the point? What a waste of time!!! The venture would be dead in the water before it had even started.

Tasmanians want their own team. They don’t want a transplanted team, or some merger bullshit.

So the question is, why are you (and others) determined to kill off North ? Sure, they’re a basket case at the moment. They’ve spent the past 5 or 6 years in the cellar… But I don’t see people calling on West Coast to fold or merge. I didn’t see anyone telling Lions, Demons or Blues fans to merge when their teams were anchored to the bottom of the ladder for years.

North are at rock bottom, but they’ll be back

I voted yes, and feel the Tassie team can come and play out of Vic, they won't need a new stadium.
So they send us their juicy draft picks and we acknowledge Tassie before every home game. Like a 'thumbs up' when the coin is tossed.
When we play away games we will be the North Melbourne Tassie-roos! And the players will wear green jocks.

FMD, FFS and FML!

Obvious troll question, and the answer is clearly no.

While North should be looking at continuing to play three or four games a year in another city, it shouldn't be a full-time relocation. Perhaps a few games each year in Bendigo? Albury? Newcastle? Wollongong? But most in Melbourne.

And here's a list of all the North players who are 23 or younger:

Dylan Stephens
Bigoa Nyuon
Charlie Comben
Tom Powell
Charlie Lazzaro
Will Phillips
Eddie Ford
Tyler Sellers
Jackson Archer
Miller Bergman
Paul Curtis
Josh Goater
Blake Drury
Brayden George
Robert Hansen
George Wardlaw
Cooper Harvey
Harry Sheezel
Riley Hardeman
Colby McKercher
Taylor Goad
Zane Duursma
Geordie Payne
Will Dawson

No wonder they're struggling if a good chunk of their list in 23 or younger.

But there's a lot of young talent there.

Add some quality talls, give them another two or three years, and you'll see them rise up the ladder.

No it hasn't. Nowhere near it.

Temporary onfield results shouldn't determine the existence of a club. North last made finals in 2016.

With 51,000+ members in 2023 and being debt free, North won't be going anywhere. They had 48,024 members on July 10th this year.

Both clubs with 100k supporters Tigers and richmond are of need of assistance but the fat boy north can't stop eating the emergency food.

Something most be done to move the fat boy out of the way so both clubs can rebuild fast.

It's either relocation or both Tigers and wce need to use their profits to buy north up or let the fat boy stand on own two feet.

Afl need to understand either lose 40k north supporters or lose 200k supporters from wce and tigers
How's the $600 headphones going?

On field doesn’t seem to be getting better even with the greatest coach of the modern era.

To be fair, drafting plodders like Wardlaw and Phillips with high picks doesn’t help the rebuild.

Newcastle and Wollongong don't have suitable stadia so they're immediately out. Bendigo vs Albury is a reasonable conversation though. 10 000 capacity in Bendigo, 12 000 in Albury. Both cities about 100 000 people (when Wodonga is included with Albury).

I feel like Albury is the more untapped market and will give the greatest rewards if committing to playing games there for the long term. Guess it depends how much they're paid though. North have never stayed that long in any secondary home, always chasing the almighty dollar rather than making a real commitment (Sydney, Canberra, Gold Coast, Ballarat, Hobart, now another one).
