Imagine Adam Goodes lining up for goal and on the big screen they cut to Kurt Tippett in the stands.
If it was our home game and Goodes was lining up for goal and the collective "19th Man" started booing, I'm sure there would be a politically correct flog like Dwayne Russell condemning us as racist; just so that he can make a headline.o_O

Goodes has made his bed so he's gonna have to lie in it until the storm passes.
If he misses this weekend or is "forced from the game" at the end of the year because of the furore he started, I will be booing him.

Yes McLeod and Long do good things for their community. They do it quietly and generally unnoticed.

If your argument requires you to bend and misrepresent facts, then your argument needs work.

This is just not true. Both have been very public for a long time - just as one example, look at what McLeod publicly fell out with Hewitt over?

i think the canonisation of a dubious tool like Goodes is insincere tokenism, a way to prove one's right on credentials. A cause looking for a home

So Goodes has taken compassionate leave and is no certainty to line up against us. His mother had also come out and said 'just let my boy play'.

God im sick of this prat. Fair enough don't boo him as it hides the racist element but now I just wish he would go away. No individual is bigger than the game, but Adam is sure trying to be.

What other players have been booed to that extent? There have been lots of hated players over the years for whatever reason, but as far as I can remember no one has come close to getting booed like Goodes.
I might boo the very odd bad decision by an umpire, I just don't get booing an opposition player. Especially every time he goes near the ball...every time!
Other players who have been booed in the past have ignored it and moved on , and so in turn do the crowds. They get bored and move on to the next 'villain'.

Adam Goodes on the other hand wisdom felt compelled to perform a highly confrontational dance that culminates in throwing an imaginary weapon at those who booed them!

Can't believe opposition supporters who are already predisposed to booing him didn't stop after that?!

I stopped reading there.

it's as far from irrelevant as it's possible to be; you can't wish away facts, context and comparators that undermine your point.

All your really saying is you have not thought about or developed your argument in sufficient depth.

I imagine you continued to repeat the same fallacious, wafer thin nonsense beyond this point.
Here's the context via the Sydney Swans CEO:
"Should anyone choose to deride Adam through booing, then they are part of something that is inherently racist and totally unacceptable. The people involved in this behaviour can justify it any way they like. Our Club calls it racism."

Up to you what you do from this point. Me, I'd prefer not to engage in conduct that would have me and the club I support seen to be promoting and condoning racism.

I think the Goodes situation is pretty simple when you stop and look at it.

People don't like being confronted on their casually racist attitudes. And make no mistake about it - Australians, by and large, are casually racist. Adam Goodes has used his privileged position to challenge Australians on the treatment of indigenous people, and they don't like it. They can't boo him for that, but they can dislike him.
I think also that there are people who aren't racist, have friends from many nationalities and backgrounds etc and having their entire country dumped upon rubs them the wrong way. Even though they understand that there are still (large or small) pockets of racist morons.

So the racists hate him because Goodes is a confronting black man who raises their behaviour and attitudes as an issue.

And the non-racists hate him because Goodes labels them as racist.

Even your sentence above - Australians, by and large, are casually racist - would prompt a **** off, boooooooooooooo cmndstab response from some!

I've seen this written a fair few times and honestly can someone point me to where this idea that Goodes called everyone racist came from?

the thing is that most of this group are actually racist and just don't think that they are.

I don't think I've spoken to a single person on the right side of this issue, there's just been the odd few on this board.

I must be a special racist. My girl is Asian, my best mates are Portugese, Indian and half-Japanese and I've spent probably 150k plus dollars over the last twelve years living in and visiting other countries, most of which have very different cultures than ours and I love it. I wouldn't boo Goodes unless he whacked one of our guys but I also think throwing imaginary spears at the crowd and calling Australia Day 'Invasion Day' was never going to end well for Adam. I think he's going about things completely wrong. But I'm a racist because clearly I can't stand an 'outspoken black man'. See if I disagree with the leftist view that we should open our borders to all and sundry and that the white man is to blame for all of the Indigenous populations problems and we should always apologise and tolerate anything said by the Indigenous population then I'm a racist. See how that works?

Theoretically, is it possible to dislike an individual of a particular background and not actually hate their whole group?

Canonisation? The only reason he is getting any attention at all is because of the racism he has suffered. Once again the victim is blamed.

Great post

I was looking forward to going to the SCG on Saturday but now not so keen.

Seems the racism debate has hijacked the game again. Not sure I want some guy throwing pretend spears at me and my family all day.
How am I supposed to react to this?
Am I supposed to take it as a form of friendship?
If so why do I feel threatened by this new Indigenous "Hakka"?....... (Jetta's version had a little salute thrown in for good measure).

Also I feel that I will have no right of protest in return at the risk being ejected from the ground. Am I expected to just sit there and politely applaud while dodging imaginary spears?

So with the above in mind I say this to the AFL.....I do not want this "Traditional dance" directed at myself or any of my family while attending the game. I expect the AFL to fulfil their duty of care to all of the patrons attending the SCG this Saturday. Black or White!

of course it is, but I think the reasons why people claim to hate Goodes have been well discussed already.

The thing is, comments like "he has contributed to some of them" are not fair. It's a similar line of thought to the "don't wear revealing clothes if you don't want to be r*ped" attitude.

Is this more asinine or offensive I can't decide?

Goodes is incendiary, provocative and inflammatory, and he's never stepped back from that. Many others have adopted more constructive, public stances to effect change.

If you believe Goodes is being deliberately challenging to provoke debate, then fine. But he isn't much of a martyr, an agent provocateur if all this sanctimony comes down to also worrying about his feelings?

Which is it? Courageous revolutionary lightening rod, or just a guy with a big mouth who bites off more than he can chew and has hurt feelings? Mandela with hurt feelings?

he's just a tool, and wanting to conflate him and a cause just does not change this.

Also, theoretically, is it possible that not all members of a minority are perfect?

And, if they are not perfect, is it at all possible that they are responsible for some of their imperfection, or is it all the cause of the oppressive majority?

Mate, if you find it inappropriate then it is :thumbsu:…let's be consistent about this.
