NRL v AFL.. are people serious?

Is this still going on?

AFL > NRL nationwide. Unarguable.

In WA, VIC SA and NT AFL by a mile. RL non existent with tiny player participation and a team in Melbourne only capable of drawing over 10,000 when ladder topping. Against AFL, Union and soccer it has no chance to grow and knows it.

In east RL ahead and Union and AFL well established - The largest sporting clubs in the East are almost exclusively AFL or Union with all Sydney League clubs unable to compete with any of them at the gate.

These are facts. AFL closer to RL in League heartlands than League is to AFL in footy heartlands. FACT.

Rugby League and soccer are invasion sports imported from England.

If you want to do something that is truly Australian in your life then support and watch Australian Rules Football.

If you wish you were back in the "home country" then support or watch soccer and rugby.

What about our TRUE NATIONAL sport cricket?

Another AFL clown

And in the latest news flash for Ronin:

Adelaide v Fremantle average rating in SYDNEY

170,000.
(Source: The Australian media liftout, 14/9)

Yes, that's right, just 2,000 less than the Swans game. For Adelaide v Fremantle.

Any more pearlers about the Sydney sporting market Ronin?

What were the ratings for the game in the other 4 capital cities?

The Australian shows the top 50 TV shows each week. Is there a link? I didn't buy the Australian today and I like looking at that liftout.

Why not throw in the AFL GF as well. I was talking about the regular season, not the finals. In any case, if 170k for either game in a city the size of Sydney is considered fabulous, I guess 100k for the Storm in a smaller city like Melbourne is not disgracefull.

Idiot dont try and spin your Sydery bu***T here mate when last counted Melbourne had 3.6 million to Sydneys 4.2 million not such a big difference!
The latest census will show the gap narrowing as Melbourne has been growing at a faster rate the Sydney.

Do you actually *know* how non Swans games in Sydney rate?

170k for Adelaide v Fremantle is only considered fabulous because the Swans could only draw 172k. It proves your previous comment that 'no-one gives a crap about non Swans matches' is just made up tripe.

So now we have a non Swans game in Sydney nearly doubling the average audience over 3 hours of a Storm game in Melbourne over 2 hours.

No surprise that you don't get it, how many live in Dandemong?

So why does this not happen in the regular season? Lets see.......because no one gives a crap when the Swans don't play. In fact, no one gives a crap when the Swans aren't playing in the finals either.

Did 170k make the top 20 for the week? Has any AFL game made the top 50 this year in either Sydney or Brisbane or any of the regionals up here?

Blah blah blah.

Rugby League is an inferior sport. Deal with it and move on. ;)

What's this all about?
All these sports have growth opportunities, all that is neccessary is 2 teams in each market/state.
Having a cross town rival makes a huge difference it gives people the illusion of choosing a side being threatened and grabbing fans more firmly to their teams cause it's easier to play up for interest value.
I don't watch league or union simply because of the skill level involved in the games I've seen its not that hard to catch and run at a bunch of guys and throw it and catch and run at a bunch of guys you simply have to be well-built balanced, reasonably quick for your size.
You are tasked with covering ground and putting the ball past a line by sheer force, wrong footing opponents and creating space.

Soccer involves pace alot of foot skills the ability to fall down and cry like a baby in a believable manner which takes acting skill :p most of the game is however spent kicking back and fourth to find an opening to penetrate or wind down the clock which really can be done from the start making for an uneventful spectacle. Again you are trying to put the ball past a line but the lines entry point is less vast.

Now Australin Rules Football involves all those things as well as leaping more space to move quickly and no restrictions to where players can be allowing for more scoring and spectacle.
It is a much more entertaining game quite simply which is known by the threatened persons attempting to convince themself of things such as this post is me also doing so.
You introduce all the codes to unspoilt non-hypnotised from birth people, even people who don't like sport and AFL will be the sport with the greater appeal with more to offer.

Feel free to ramble on about revenue, noone is under threat at all with all having room for growth.
But the trifles of vanity go on :p

Whoever you work around is going to be more like you then not inside your proximity of influence it is the natural course.
You take any person to a spectacle where people are enjoying themself and the newcomer will likely do the same unless they are rather sadistic then you just take them home and spank them or vise versa.

Besides this battle was fought out on family feud Akermanis gave the NRL lads a pasting even with the Fevola handicap.

This is the exact reason why the NRL and it's supporters fear the inclusion of a second Sydney team.

Imagine !!! :)

Yep and 70,000 is not 17% of 170,000 is it?
BTW the AFL is going to spend $100 MILLION over the next 5 years on development in NSW and QLD how do you like them apples?

The Australian — Sport$100m punt to over take rugby codes

Greg Denham
September 15, 2006

THE AFL will pour more than $100million in development money to NSW and Queensland over the next five years to establish itself as the pre-eminent code in Australia.
The league yesterday released details of how it will spend $1.4billion between 2007 and 2011 and 15 per cent of it will go to game development and establishing new markets, especially in Sydney's west and in south-east Queensland.

In a document titled Next Generation - Securing the future of Australian football, the AFL said its aim was "to clearly establish ourselves as the pre-eminent sporting code in Australia for the long term".

I am rapt that the money collected is being spent in our economy. I am sure Bracks would love it to be spent in Victoria after all the money that he p1ssed against the wall for the Commonwealth Games. That was a few hundred million wasn't it, way more than $100m over 5 years.

Look at where all the millions that have been spent has got the Swans in 20 years........170k watching the biggest game of the year. This is after they have won the flag. The SOO easily beat those numbers in Melbourne. Lets see what happens when they have their eventual downturn. The Lions have shown us what happens.

I guess IF these 2 new teams come in, we can expect even more of your hard earned being funnelled into buying Sherrin's for Auskick sessions. Then, once the sessions are over, its back to the sports they always played.

I notice that the AFL now says that they want a team in Sydney by 2015. WTF? Everyone on this forum was saying that it would only be a few short years. The closer it gets to those dates, watch it slowly being pushed back.

Hell, the incompetant NRL will have at least 2 new teams by 2015 out of Wellington, Central Coast, Brisbane or Perth. What is the AFL waiting for, as it is the biggest game around isn't it?

All of the Sydney clubs are now either backed by leagues clubs or rich benefactors. In terms of crowds, the NRL average crowds are comparable to many sports around the world.

I guess the NRL should look at the powerhouse examples of Carlton, Nth Melbourne and Bris Lions. In any case, without the AFL funding, all the clubs would be broke, just as the NRL clubs without their funding.

Your club had to sell out its fans by moving games to Tasmania. Why would they do that if they where on top of things. Maybe we should look at the Nott Forest example of how to blow up a club.

I watch sport for the enjoyment of the game. Fools like yourself talk about how AFL is going to take the world by storm, then in the next sentence mutter how Football is a joke where they have expanded into new regions around the globe. It is very entertaining.

English second division soccer averages more than your RL! :p

HAHAHAHA

It is known as the dumbest game in the world! At least you rate No 1 for playing a dumb sport!

Perth! ha, Sydney has a greater rate of support for Football than Perth has for RL with 3 times the population. I'm sure that a new Perth team will go the way of the Reds.
Thanks for the laugh anyway

Sydney Swans: Average attendance (11 games) 34,252

Melbourne Storm: Average attendance (12 games) 10,853

Melbourne Victory: Average attendance (2 games) 27,756*

*a 2-game comparison isn't really fair, so: (2005-06 season: 10 games, 14,158**)
**Just to point that out: Of the 10 games the Victory hosted, exactly one drew less than the average Storm attendance for this season, when the Storm are flying.

Each code's largest crowd for the current season:

60,307 Sydney 11.16 (82) Collingwood 14.11 (95) Telstra Stadium AFL Round 12
39,730 Melbourne Victory 3 Sydney FC 2 Telstra Dome A-L Round 2
15,690 Storm 12 Eels 6 Olympic Park NRL Qualifying Final

There is nothing resembling comparison. AFL in NSW/QLD >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
NRL in Vic.

Hell, the NRL is Code #3 in this town now and they know it. And even such attempts at success as they acheive in this town directly correlate to the performance of the Storm - their average yearly crowd peaked the year after they won the Premiership, and then settled in to a steady decline until this year, when they're flying and STILL couldn't average as much as they did five years ago. Pack the Drizzle off to Gosford.

Were the Swans even drizzle in their 8th year?

Melbourne Storm are there to stay! Give them a half decent stadium and they will pull crowds... Victory got 15 odd thousand to there first game at the same stadium (Fudged figure? The Storm V Eels game surely had more, it seemed that way looking at the crowd)...

A large portion of the Victory crowd either sits in the Eastern Stand or stands up at the North End, so it'll look like that on telly while actually not being true. (But hey, you keep assuming bad faith...)

The NRL doesn't need to publish an AFL style manifesto each year on how they are taking over Australia, to expand the game. Remember that there where two other bids that lost out to the Gold Coast (Wellington and the Central Coast). If News decide to get behind a team in Perth, then it will certainly happen before any AFL team is launched in Sydney.

Lets see what happens when North Melbourne play at a 'packed' Carrara, just like they did in Canberra. I guess it will be like old days when they tried to crack it in Sydney, and then packed their bags and scurried away.:p

I could take some of the other crap in this thread (from both sides) but this comment is so laughable it deserves derision!

Fear a second Sydney team?
Hahahahaha! Who the hell would even go to the game? Who would care? It would rate just above Kings vs Razorbacks in terms of a derby and that's only cos 7/10 are forced to show it FTA.

If AFL wants to throw away its money in western sydney feel free. No Rugby fan fears that level of stupidity.
