Great stat work.

We are reigning Premiers.
I would expect us to be experience heavy.

Not sure there’s a problem here. Yet.

EFA. If we win in 2018 Buckley survives 2021 and we don’t now have McRae…
I would have been delighted to see Bux get a flag.

I’m now delighted we won it with McRae

At the risk of being controversial, the longer this season goes, the more grateful I am that we snatched a flag in 2023.

The more I look at our list, the bigger the holes I see. We are still far too reliant on aging warriors and they’re not being pushed aside by talented hungry youngsters. And we lack top-tier structural tall players, which are so hard to find.

I’d go so far as to say that we have the weakest set of under-22 players in the league. Mismanagement of our salary cap and draft picks (and a bit of bad luck) over several years had left the cupboard relatively empty. There’s nothing much in the VFL for any of us to get truly excited about and we don’t even have a first rounder this year. We’ve just not capable of going back-to-back.

I know that all sounds like a negative whinge but it’s not. I’m eternally grateful that we seized our moment. Much better than the likes of Brisbane, Port and GWS who have been knocking on the door for years without ever getting it done.

I expect us to miss the Eight this year and to slide into the bottom four in 2025, before starting to rebuild in 2026. But the memories of 2022 and 2023 will keep me smiling as our renewal period runs its course.

Agree with your sentiment. Fly not only did a great innovative job coaching a list that was only just there in terms of contention but he also went all in with his career. Rather that take a partial rebuild type process he went for immediate success probably knowing if he didn't pull it off his senior coaching career may have not lasted.

Now despite our old best 23 and a fairly empty cupboard of players coming through we are basking in the reflection of a flag and Fly will coach us for a good while. We are in excellent hands.

Our veterans will not be at their peak when they’re replaced. Therefore there is nothing to fear in term of pure football ability in replacing them.
We will lose their experience and on field leadership- so the question becomes do we have emerging leaders to replace them.
Pendles will be the hardest to replace - he’s a once in a generation on field maestro.
I’m comfortable we’ll be able to replace
these leaders, and combined with our war chest I doubt, if we fall to bottom 4 as you’re predicting.

Would love a Key forward but below highlights the pressing need:

The two oldest teams in the last positions (is that really Geelong's starting midfield?) but on the upside Carlton could be found out in September with those numbers.

It's 2 x mids I reckon, replace Pendles and send Nick back to defence while his body matures, it's easy to forget how young he is he's such a gun.
Source?

I'm keen for Harrison to get Beau's F50 role as I think the spot as a more accountable, tackling 3rd mid could be more permanent.

Sully surely gets a chance to rotate with Titch soon.
I would imagine Sullivan gets a look in very soon, even as a sub. HH will add nicely to our F50 pressure.

I could see Beau moving to a defensive midfielder role. My dream is for him to develop into a Tom Atkins type - low possession numbers, but maniacal tackling

Ignore the number of under 22. That's simply because we've moved away from late draft picks and chosen the SSP route instead. It's all about the quality when it comes to the young kids on your list. Other than Nick, we don't really know what we've got yet.

If it didn’t cost an arm and a leg, we should be trying to coax Ryley Sanders to leave the Bulldogs and be saved from Bevo? If we took him from the Dogs for three seasons and oversold high …

They don't? Who did they trade it for?
The AFL on Monday confirmed the Bulldogs had received Picks 4, 46 and 51, as well as Gold Coast's future third-round pick. The Suns, meanwhile, acquired three first-rounders: Picks 10, 17 and the Dogs' future first-round pick. The three first-rounder deal was flagged by foxfooty.com.au in September

They gave up a lot for sanders

What do you mean if it didn’t cost an arm and a leg? You well know it would and we hardly have an arm, let alone leg 😂

He’s literally just been drafted. Next thing we will going after a players first born

Extremely unlikely, but what do people think it would cost in trade value if JUH was to nominate us?

Clearly our picks are limited, so it would need to involve players. Therefore, which players?

To my mind Macrae, McCreery and our future first would be the minimum.

That would be the entry fee 😂
Yeh, probably. There’s probably a few more picks and maybe a player too - I don’t think we have a player we’d be willing to give though, other than perhaps, at a stretch, IQ.

Dogs to me lack a big defender, a quality wing, a small forward and someone who is capable of playing hybrid tall/small in their backline. Our options in these spots aren’t players I’d see us as being willing to trade.

We might have a future leg, or can trade in an arm if one of our pelvises wants to leave.

The Dogs don't want Fins brother so I doubt they want Fin. McCreery would be right up their alley and would take him in a heartbeat but we are going to need a hell of a lot more

The Dogs seem the most exposed and there seems to be something wrong at that club which might just make it easier to pry players out. They have so many players who will command big dollars. The maths can’t add up.
Is naughton a million dollar forward? He’s a great player but I look at the million club as players like Cameron, free kick curnow, etc.

I think he’s a step below them. JUH will be though.

English a mill? Not for me. He’s way too uncompetitive.
