I’m no draft expert. But simply saying our first next year should net us 12 this year is far to simplistic.
This year’s draft is reported as very deep. Next year by all reports is not as strong, and seems even more full of academy players. So to simply say for example pick 10-12 next year is the same as pick 12 this year makes no sense. If the top 20 this year is the equivalent of top 10 next year then the pick value is diff. None of us have scouting notes in every kid this year or next. The clubs do. So they know the values of the picks more than anyone here. They will know what quality they could potentially get in pick ranges. That’s their job.

Second to this, it’s already clear Gold Coast has multiple suitors wanting pick 12. It’s a bidding war. In an auction, you are going to pay more.

I don’t know the value. But it’s not a straight swap.

You can if you value them very differently and don't consider them essentially the same player.

If they pay 6 for him, they obviously value him way higher than you or I do.

I would have thought they'd be able to trade 6 and 12 for Rioli, Noble and 2 future firsts - but sounds like both they and Richmond are in love with Rioli.
At the end of the day that’s fine, but it means they miss on Noble. Let’s not pretend though that them rating Rioli as worthy of 6 (7 post an Ashcroft bid) isn’t going to influence our thinking on Noble’s worth.

I think that’s about what 6 & 12 are worth and realistically it’s what they need given Uwland should be the favourite to go number 1 overall as we speak, but their preparedness to pay way overs for Rioli is going to be what costs them that pay off. Leave it go down to the wire and they’ll do a Weller because they need to get players over the line that want to go there.

If we wanted a Murphy replacement why didn't we have a crack at Josh Battle? Weird
We did. Cal Twomey reported it on Gettable earlier in the year. It very quickly came down to staying at the Saints or going to Hawks based on his relationship with Jarryd Roughead.

Just keep F1st. We’ve been burnt everytime we trade it.

Leave it there and at least there will be some silver lining if next season turns out poor.

Get 20, give for Peatling or Lord.

Get 20, take it to the draft.

We should trade Mcinnes and Macrae, we need to be ruthless and look for better replacements.

I'd also see if there are any takers for Lipinski.

Noble can go.

Johnson and Kruger are worth nothing more than a packet of chips.

No one I've listed makes any difference to winning a flag.

If Richards wants to go, let him.

Cut Bytel, Long, Sullivan as well.

That leaves me feeling pretty flat. Geelong extracted 3 draft picks for an injury prone fringe player in Esava.

If Noble stays he is locked in for 15-20 games minimum. That's a pretty valuable squad player to be lost.

Picks around that range in recent years.

2018 - Pick 29 Kelly 5 games in total

2020 - Pick 17 Henry 10 games in 22 and 15 in 23.
2020 - Pick 19 Finlay Macrae most games in a season is 9
2020 - Pick 23 Reef most games in a season is 9
2020 - Pick 30 Poulter most games in a season for us is 11.

2022 - Pick 19 Allan (will be good)
2022 - Pick28 Ryan 1 game

So for me 6 flops and 1 possible success in Allan.

Noble has outperformed all those draft picks imo. The only 1 I can see be better than Noble is Allan.

Soery but pick 20 does not cut it.
Take some comfort that Dimma wants Rioli and Noble running out of defense next year.

Here’s a crazy scenario. Collingwood value Noble at the same or a similar level to Rioli 🤯

McRae is on record as valuing players not picks and that he doesn’t want to lose Noble. GC, like Collingwood last year with Shoota, have come for a player under contract so the value needs to be right to move him.
There definitely is such a thing as “contracted player tax”.

Get 20, take it to the draft.
That pushes back to at least 27 based on Perryman and Battle compensation plus bids on Ashcroft, Lombard, Marshall, Tauru and Kaku. Is that enough for Noble with two years to run on his contract?

I believe the contract for Perryman will put us out of the race for Houston. I can't see him fitting under the cap with Harry.

Even with Noble and Richards most likely going, I think we'll only be able to bring in modest players now. But I'm pretty happy with the Perryman acquisition!
With imminent retirees in the next couple of years, you can easily back end a contract for Houston knowing that cap space will open up.

No one wants them including us!

THat's not a crazy scenario, but how we value Noble doesn't affect Rioli's price and how we value Rioli doesn't affect Noble's price.
I don’t believe Scodog was suggesting one affects the other - more how we value Noble and it may not be dissimilar to Richmond and Rioli.

I think it'll make us push harder for a more advantageous deal, but not necessarily get it. He's contracted, we'll have a minimum we are willing to acept and they'll have a maximun they're willing to pay and he'll be traded within that range - or no deal will be done. If they pay a bomb for the sofa, it might mean they're willing to pay a bomb for the armchairs, but it also might mean that they get stingy on the armchairs as they've already spent too much. I think the last point you made - it being GC and someone having nominated them is the biggest reason why we're a chance of getting overs.

It’s mad that posters actually think this is a good outcome!
Bonkers isn’t it? We’d be far better off just taking pick 20 for Noble in that scenario and holding on to our F1 for a different trade, be it this year or next.
