Opinion Paddy Dow, can you see a pathway for him to break into our best 22 or are we resigned to losing him?

What are Dow's chances of breaking into the best 22?

Looks like he'll be a late inclusion. Not sure who comes out, but he hasn't been named in the reserves for today's game so I would imaging this was the plan all along.
named as sub.

he is probably the most appropriate sub. will need cover in case a mid goes down.

on the otherhand if no injuries he misses a week of footy.

Dow has a number of hurdles to overcome:
  • Lack of flexibility. Doesn't have a 2nd position when things don't click. In fact he's so inflexible you can't even re-assign him a new role in the midfield such as a tagger or blocker. If he's having a bad day you're effectively playing a man down for the entire match.
  • Two-way running is non-existent and lacks a defensive side to his game.
  • Decision-making is very suspect at AFL level.
  • One percenters such as blocking, bumping, tackling, taking an opponent's run, shepherding, creating space, etc are more often than not non-existent in Dow's game.
  • Skill execution by hand and foot at AFL level has been well below par as a general rule.
  • Lack of consistency.
The good news for Dow is that development is definitely a much higher priority under the current coaching regime than it ever was under the previous one. In that regard I'm sure Dow his been given sage advice on which parts of his game need work and how Power and O'Keefe can best assist with developing those areas. You only have to look at the rapid rate of improvement in Setterfield's, Owies, O'Brien's and Durdin's games as proof. Heck, even Cripps and Kennedy have added layers to their game over the summer.

The bad news for Dow is that should a spot become available in the next few weeks he'll be competing against the likes of Stocker, Carroll, Motlop, Fogarty, Honey, Philp, Kemp, etc all of whom are developing just as quickly and provide greater flexibility.

If there's one player I'd love to get a full preseason into under this coaching group before we let him go it'd be Cunners. I'm not saying he'd be any better or worse, but I'd just like to see what they can do with him.
This is spot on !
eventually LOB showed more than Dow !......[this is just an observation]
Dow seems a slow learner.....he has had so many chances and so much time put into him...but still he has not gone out there and got himself properly fit,yet he still has not gone out and attacked some games
However....perhaps ...perhaps,he just might scrape in...
Cerra also still needs time and may be not as good as we think....he is not Elite as i observed him directly at the Suns match and attracked bullying from the Suns !!....the gap between him and Dow might not be that much.......but probably still quite a bit

CFC have put so much into Dow and we have been slaughtered because of him......surely Dow would want to try and make up for that?
His Bro looked ok for Tigers....
I dont think CFC will move him or LOB on this year....i think LOB has more to offer than Cottrell etc

If we get enough wins in the 1st half of the year yiu could bring in Dow for a 5 week stint and spell all our midfielders for a week each.

If injuries occur at any stage he will get in earlier.

He can potentially play 5-10 games. If he plays well you try and keep him on the list or trade him for decent value.

Spot on..each way win
bit of a disapointment Dow......Wow he always looked good....Walsh elite fitness, attainable via determination,Dow not so just doesnt want that...cannot coach that....force him to bust his guts and attack, its just not him [big difference in approach]
Notice Samo SPS got any early game for the Eagles not now tho.....same issues he just chipped the ball around.i thought he would be a star !!

sometimes just got to let it go !!

I think he will request a trade if he ends up playing a handful of games only this year. He had some moments - specifically the Freo game last year at the G - where you thought he could come of age and finally arrive. But he mustn’t be meeting particular KPI of coaching staff to get a game, seems many who have watched our ressies every game have said it’s most likely defensive running or aspects of his game.

Kennedy is twice the player Dow is even with a thigh injury/corkie. Kennedy had 20 possessions. I don't think Dow has 20+ 10 times in his 60 games. Kennedy was ok against Port with 2 games in the votes on top of that.

Stop with the hyperbole.
Dow has had 20+ 10 times in his career. Kennedy has been in the votes once this year.

There's also the fact that Kennedy is 2 and half years older than Dow.
