Well it's only been five weeks since the Grand Final but I suppose the 'drop Masten' crew have found it safe to re-emerge from hibernation.

Firstly Masten is 29. Hill will take two seasons to reach AFL fitness levels to play wing. Do the math. Hill replaces Mqsten when he retires.

Secondlt, if you can be bothered checking I am not in the drop Masten crew. Been pretty supportive of him last year.

Two seasons ago I was refering to Masten as the most tackled man in the AFL and said he needed to decide to hit the weights hard and get stronger or cut down and get quicker. Sammy Mitchell came in and said stop doing heavy weights and get your run back. The rest is history, Masten is a premiershio player.

Drafting kids is planning 2+ years ahead.

Imagine Hill on a wing getting 20 possesions instead of Masten.

He actually can apply tackling pressure, is super fast and the hurt factor is 10 fold that Masten has.

At pick 20 which will slide to 23/24 its a no brainer IMO.

Then grab a bigger inside mid two picks later in Valente, O'Halloran or Ely Smith.

This GWS wikl draft Hill at 19. They need a small hffer with pace and x factor.

Adelaide a good chance at 21 if thise SA boys are gone.
Based off the 2 minute highlight video I just watched I see a slightly more outside Daniel Kerr.
Or Malcolm Karpany part 2.

Well no shit, but the way you're posting suggests Ian Hill would immediately replace Masten because he's apparently already better at so many things than Masten. I was a big proponent of dropping Masten at the start of this year but he has earnt his spot for 2019. It's up to the others now to push him out. The only one that deserves a spot ahead of him that wasn't in our GF team is Gaff.

I give it two weeks before the 'drop Hutchings' crew also chimes in.

Based off the rankings for the past 12 months by draft experts Hill was ranked a top 10 talent who has slid to the teens.

If that talent is there at 23 we would seriously have to consider taking him.

I still remember us taking Tom Swift ahewd of Walters.:(

Walters was picked up in the 50s so it's not really comparable. Every now and then you get the massive sliders that become stars. Them's the breaks. Almost 100 players were taken ahead of Jeremy McGovern.

Wasn't having a go, I already agreed we should take him if he was there. But I think it's a very high risk/reward pick.

Didnt think you were having a go.:thumbsu:

Using one of our picks on a high risk high reward pick isnt silly though given our position list wise and success wise.

I actually hope someone grabs him so its not an issue for us.

I would like some bigger more flexible mids like Duursma, O'Halloran or a pure mid like Valente.

Again I keep saying it would be nice to get another mid or late 2nd. Stack, Ely Smith and other good kids will still be there.

How would we realistically get another mid 2nd rounder though without giving up a player which it's already too late for us to do?

Both the Dogs and Swans will lose their 2nd rounders to bids on Blakey and West, trade our 2019 2nd plus our 2018 picks worth 300+ points for pick 25 or 26. May also need that 2019 4th we got from Saint Kilda.

Go in with picks 20 + 22 + 26.

And if we get a bid on Cameron what do we use?

That depends of where he is bid on.

IMO he is a late 30's bid at the earliest. What did Waterman get taken at? 72.

A 3rd round bid say pick 40 is 429 points less the 20% discount is 343 so we would lose our 3rd round pick in 2019.

We already have two 4th rounders in 2019.

Can see the Lions bidding with 56.

I think people are seriously over rating where a bid on Cameron will come. That should in no way hold us back from being aggressive in chasing another 2nd rounder that could land a player the quality of O'Halloran or Smith or Bailey Williams.

They need those points to match bids though. So they won’t trade them.

They can only take in as many picks as they have spare list spots. So they can’t pay using heaps of late picks.

Where did we get the extra 4th rounder from next year?
So in this scenario basically Syndey/Bulldogs get an extra second rounder next year but then have to use their next highest pick/picks to get the academy or f/s selection. I guess it depends how much they value those later picks and how many players they want to take this year as to whether they'd do it. Our later picks aren't really going to do much for them if they have to use their earlier picks to match.

Where do I suggest Hill would replace Masten straight away? Never said that at all in fact. You interpreted that which is your thoughts not mine.

You have to be an exceptional talent to be drafted as an 18 yr old and to displace best 22 player.

I have been a big supporter of lesser role players like Hutchings and Masten. It is all but impossible to have 10 gun players in a side never mid 22. The salary cap as well as 18 teams ensures that.

I will say though that after three years I would not be surprised to see Hill doing things off a wing that Masten can only dream of and that 20 possessions by Hill would contribute more than 30 from Masten plus Hill can chase and tackle. Hill could also end up a lazy flop.

I can see Nelson being Hutchings replacement in another couple of years as our run with mid. Again a role player that is important to team structures and our defense.

Masten will hold his place next year but in 2020 when he is 30 turning 31 the kids will be snapping at his heels which is exactly what we want.:thumbsu::thumbsu:

I was hoping we could trade our pick 20 for the dogs 27+45 if they havent had a bid on west yet .
22 for o'halleran/valente / smith
27 kennerley
45 pickett

Too big a risk that 45 would be needed on Cameron IMO. Hence we need to land one of those picks between 25-30.

Kennerley or Bailey Williams at 27ish would be nice. Williams ay 198cm is a Vardy replacement in 2-3 years and provides a bit more depth in the ruck division.

Talk of clubs trading out and then trading back in after academy bids sorted. We are well placed to help with that.
