After reading this article, I find it amazing how a club can offer picks that it never had or hadn't gained.

http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/story/0,20867,20576997-36035,00.html

Sounds like Pelchen had made an important statement while at Port (Stevens) and grabbed a great deal for Hay last year, but other clubs become well aware of these tactics.

I admire the guys like the Scott Claytons' of the Dogs and the recruiting department of West Coast. Both are clear, negotiate well and reach a fair and reasonable outcome.

He has really shown himself to be a joke... On thursday night he was on SEN proclaiming the high ground (using the Stevens example) & stated that Hawthorn would definately NOT accept pick 33 for Spider.

What happens 18 hours later? Roos beautifully calls his bluff & Pelchen weasels back to the table to accept pick 33.

Pelchen may have screwed the Kangaroos over last year in the Hay deal but he is fast becoming a loathed figure in AFL ranks. The Hawks had better be careful with him at the helm of trading talks as he has a growing reputation for wanting to screw other clubs at all costs.

I couldn't agree more.

People keep talking about how well he did with the Hay deal, but all he did was ask for a high price, and the Kangaroos were dumb enough to meet it.

They never should have done that, but it's hardly good dealing on his part that they were willing to bend over and take it in that deal.

I mean, I'm sure we asked for Pick #8 and David Mundy, but we were never going to get that from Freo. However, it would hardly be great dealing on our part if Freo just opened up their wallet and emptied it out for us - It's just good fortune.

Spot on.

How can it be good ealing, if you don't deal. (see Bret Thornton)

It was obvious Hawthorn was trying to get more out of the Sydney deal so they could throw it at Carlton for THornton.

Sydney put pick 33 on the table and it was left there, all Hawthorn had to do was accept it, Thats why Hawthorn offered it.

He has proven himself to have zero integrity and of being a fraud. He makes offers with picks he doesn't have. Gets in the public forum and mocks others when he has no grounds to.

And regardless of what others think of Thronton, he is a 22 y.o KP defender who is still yet to produce his best footy and probably has 8-10 years service ahead of him which will take him to around 200-250 AFL games (barring injury).

If such a player is only worth 2 speculative 2nd round picks then you're all as dumb as Pelchen. If you think he is so worthless then be glad he is not at your club

Pelchen tried to rort us like they did the roos last year with Hay and it didn't work. Carlton listened to that pathetic offer and rightly chose to ignore it. The whorks were never serious and if they were hoping to get him in the PSD for nothing, well you failed there too Pelchen! :p

This is funny stuff, Pick 33 was on the table since Tuesday, all we had 2 do was accept it, either way Carlton refused.

2 second round picks for a stock standard full back is worth it.

Funny how much changes in 12 months!
This stock standard FB is still better than anything you've got. Its funny stuff that a Kp that can play in one of the 2 key defensive posts is worth 24 and 33. Fanstasy stuff im afraid. Try again whorks! :p

I never said he wasn't better than anything we have got, but he is stock standard. He wouldn't be in the Top 8 fullbacks in the league, that would make him stock standard and worth 2 second round draft picks in the so called best draft.

No grief here, we have a up and coming full back in Dawson who should be fine once he puts on weight and we get to keep our draft picks :)

Pelchen lacks integrity and by association so does Hawthorn.

The Hawthorn Football Club has lost a great deal of respect, these last few years under Pelchen's rule. The Hawthorn name has been tarnished , by an ego, who's scale and proportion , is not welcome in the greater AFL community.

For future traders with the Hawthorn Football Club whilst Pelchen is in charge, well all I can say is:

" Caveat Emptor"

I started in French.

Summarised in Latin.

I will finish in Australian : Pelchen is an ar$hole.

You are kidding right? Aker for pick 34! The Lions may as well have just given him to the Bullies. Clayton would have spent 2 nanoseconds to work out how good a deal that is and said "where do I sign". Zero negotiating skills required.

It's not the fact of the Aker deal Peerless, McDougall and Birss deals were quick and clean. Chick and Stinger in previous years

West Coast was clear on what they would offer for Tarrant, when Collingwood wanted more, they stated they were pulling out, that is an indication of clarity

I agree pick 33 was there for a while, so why not take it and concentrate on a more appropriate deal for Thornton.

Become inventive rather than preaching about taking a stand then fold for the very thing that Pelchen regarded as inappropriate.

A poor mans Greg Miller with about as much idea of a 'win win trade deal' as Mick Malthouse. He along with the veritable army that is the Hawthorn recruiting team are something of a joke!

Let me touch on somethings here:
1) If Pelchen goes in to a trade period with the idea of engineering a "Win-Win" trade, I want him sacked on the spot. He should go in with the sole idea of doing the best for the Hawks. If the trade works out as win-win (e.g. Thompson deal to the Roos), good.

2) From my understanding from everything reported, the Everitt deal had components that only made sense if the Thorton deal went through. Thats why it went so late. What do I mean? If you list to the press conference with Pelchen after the end of the trade period on Friday, he mentioned that the Swans had also offered a 4th round pick that Hawthorn chose not to take. My reading of this is that if Hawtorn had traded those two 2nd round draft picks for Thorton (i.e. 2 players for 1) they would have wanted the extra draft pick. Seeing the trade never went through for Bad Santa, then no need for the 4th round pick.

3) Must remember that after the Swans said they wouldn't budge on a third round pick, the Hawks got to at least a 2nd and 4th, a bit of a difference.

The essence of trade week is to acquire and offload at a fair price for the betterment of your club.

Pelchen ran a dumb risk of delivering the hawthorn fans nothing at all for Everitt...Sydney could have just said "nahhh...too difficult"....all for the sake of his childish ego games.

The Everitt deal for a start SHOULD have been the simplest thing in the world and done and dusted early on....when a fair deal is on the table you do the deal and work on others instead of risking failure. Apparantly with just minutes left he's run in to tell Syndey "yeah we'll take it"...derrrrr...my hero..holding out like a rank amateur.

Paul Roos has already come out and stated how ridiclous it was...Sydney is an active trader and doesnt muck about....they put something fair on the table and were stuff arsed about.

What goes around comes around....if Clarkson asks Pelchen to get him something he might find he's now screwed. Dont stuff around the other clubs for the sake of it...aving idiots like Pelchen in the mix is one reason clubs are so bloody conservative now....its amateur hour at the hawks.

Rang on a second. Everyone that is saying the deal should have been done early in the week are probably the same ones that said that we should have just take the Syndey 3rd round pick. In the end we where offered a 2nd and 4th (we declined the 4th as we won't be using it).

I don't get it - why would you not take the 4th round pick if they offered it?

Sounds like he is talking crap

Because you have to use any selection that you trade for.

Richmond declined Pick #59 or so from Western last year because they weren't going to be drafting that late.

Gotcha, so you can pass with your own draft picks, but must use ones you trade for.

Thanks :thumbsu:
