Player Watch Pick #49 (2020) - Ollie Lord

As has already been said Lord's kicking is about 50/50 at SANFL level, so as per Ford I'm also of the opinion it's probably nerves and maybe also a bit of fatigue that makes it worse at AFL level.

What the club absolutely cannot do is let his kicking deteriorate to the level of Butch, I can distinctly recall the final game of the last incarnation of the Maggies against the bays at Glenelg oval when I was directly in line behind him on the outer half forward flank northern end when Butch lined up for a set shot from about 45 metres out and his boot made contact with the ball with it outside the line of his body, and it went exactly where it should have gone given the point of contact, ie out of bounds on the full 15- 20 metres to the right of the behind post.

Interesting to note that Melbourne players are saying that Choco has been working very hard on their kicking.

Chocolate knows what it takes to win a flag, Tredrea and Schulz both offered their service with our goal kicking but of course we don't need it, Ken's got it covered.

I've never seen him kick that badly at sanfl level so would lean toward a mix of fatigue and nerves.

He's such a natural forward and plays a rugged game of footy, they have to get the kicking right. Maybe work with whoever improved Dylan's off-season fitness regime.
Based on instagram photos, he and Dylan were training with the same PT over the last offseason.

At least he knows the guy. ;)

Don't forget his pre-season fitness took a big hit when he lacerated a kidney, missed 7 weeks of training and lost 10kg in a month which he put back on by much eating and gym work, but that would have impacted his endurance.

We know he is committed to being the best he can be, so he will work hard to sort out his kicking issues.

Lords like what? 5th on our kpf depth chart.

I’m not sure there’s a team with a better 5th kf than lord.

He did lots great last night up until those kicks, for. Young kpf you persist. They’re just so hard to find and worse case scenario if what he is is all he ends up being that’s far better than the depth a lot of clubs have.

Persist but look to address looming deficiencies. Like a specialist kicking coach for Mitch and Ollie. I won't hold my breath.

He did a lot right today, sure bad kicking is bad kicking however comparing his issues &/or kicking action to someone as diabolical as Butcher is ridiculous.
No, it really isn't. Lord had a shank in his first game and a second shank last night which were both worse than any kick I've ever seen from Butcher.

I've seen Butcher kick a ball off his knee & another completely miss his foot.
The comparisons with Butcher are irrelevant. The facts are from any shot at goal there is a 39% chance he will kick a point, a 33% chance he will kick a goal and a 28% chance it won't make the distance or will be out on the full. That is diabolical and deflating not only to him, but the team.

I don't know how many more games Dixon is likely to miss and how much the time off helps his injury, but he is more of a headache to opposition coaches on one leg than Lord is on two. Alternately perhaps we should look at playing Burton as a tallish forward if McKenzie, Bergmann and Aliir are available down back depending on the opposition.

It's clear Lord has a lot to offer but he needs a full preseason and, like certain other forwards, time with a coach who will instruct him on areas of kicking for goal. Routine, kicking when fatigued, how to use the clock, goalkicking action and follow through. The whole box and dice.

Warren Tredrea’s kicking for goal wasn’t great when he started but really improved over the years, he was saying during the week he had a kicking coach who taught him all about routine and following through, not sure if they still have specialist kicking coaches but Ollie Lord could definitely benefit from one.

typical big man that tends to lean back late on his kicks, Dixon was the same for a long time
This plus young fella jitters
No real concerns
There's a bit of concern.
Some of his sets shots are diabolical. Needs to sort it in the offseason. All his other attributes are great.

The fact that we don't, to my knowledge, have a specialist goal kicking coach says it all.

And I don't care if other clubs don't have one either. It's unprofessional and disrespects the importance of goal kicking to performance.
