Player Watch Pick #5 (2018) - Connor Rozee (AFL Captain)

Rozee told News Corp the main reason he played in attack early in the season was because of personnel – the Power was missing small forwards Robbie Gray, Orazio Fantasia and Kane Farrell.

All off-season, Port Adelaide spruiked how Rozee would get more midfield opportunities in 2022, along with Zak Butters and several other youngsters, yet until last week, he was mainly stationed in his customary spot at half-forward.

“Sometimes it’s hard to get involved as a half-forward because it’s getting kicked over your head or not getting kicked to you,” Rozee said.

“That’s why I like going back into the midfield and get back into the game and I feel I can build my confidence through that.

“I’m obviously happy to play forward if I have to, but when we have everyone back and I can get back into the midfield, that’s where I think I can have a pretty big impact.

“It’s nice to go in there, have a bit of a longer stint and feel like I’m a bit more part of the midfield now.

“Hopefully, like the team, I can keep building on this.”

Did you actually just suggest not playing Wines in the midfield? Good lord
Actually I said I would rather Ollie play forward than Boak. What I didn't do was make it clear that I was talking on a rotational basis, not a permanent basis. Why Ollie instead of Boak?

  • Boak demonstrably is not a good high half forward. His goalkicking accuracy since 2015 is 41% for a start...
  • Most seem to want Ollie to become a goalscorer to take the 'next step up' ala Dusty, Bont, Petracca etc. Surely the best way to do that would be to rest/rotate up forward?

Has been really good, but, Devils advocate, want to see him do it against a very good midfield. The Eagles mids were non-existent really, and Cartlon stopped after half time. But he HAS to be left in the midfield now.

I don’t think anyone can say Rozee has made it as a midfielder on the back of beating up a half arsed opponent. His second half against Carlton was impressive though. What last weekend told us is if he is on song in the midfield, he has a high ceiling.

Expect inconsistent performances though, if he continues to be used as a 75%/25% midfield/forward.

What I like however, is that Rozee and Butters are now in direct competition with each other for midfield time alongside Wines, Boak and Drew. I hope to see them push each other to new heights to be that 4th midfielder.

Has Connor's past month turned his game around.

He has looked so comfortable playing around the ball. He finally gets the chance to run at the ball toward goal and keep going.

His clean hands and blistering acceleration away from contests has been so important to us and changed the way we played. Dare I say almost Bradleyesque?

He can deliver a ball with precision and is one of those players who might not be a stat pig who accumulates 40 possessions with no harm, but can cut a side up with 20 touches.

Has copped a lot of criticism the past couple of years, but looks to have shaken off the persistent injuries and found a role that uses his immense talent and allows him to flourish.

Now for a few hangers around the ground like Max James for another ye olde comparison.

His burst of speed is one of the best I've seen in a port jumper. It's really good to see him using that running towards goal as you said, rather than running around in circles with his back to goal.

Sam Hayes at centre bounces hits the ball into space, Connor Rozee runs onto the ball first, is something I have noticed clearly since after half time of the Carlton game.

I think this is a good point, having a good tap ruck makes a tonne of difference.

That said, I have very much liked the way Connor has gone over the past few games.

Not sure why it has taken so long to get him into he midfield more, he's a clean ball user with excellent pace and we couldn't hit the broad side of a barn in the first few weeks.

Further to this story and several other posts since it was posted in here, outside of injuries, its very hard to pick a turning point in a player's career. The going into the middle after half time of the carlton game might very well be one of these ocassions for Connor. A double act with Sam Hayes might be a decade long thing.
