Player Watch Pick #5 (2018) - Connor Rozee (AFL Captain)

Any truth in the rumour that he has played last 2 seasons with a bruised heel he can't shake?

Possibly. It was also possibly an excuse that he happily took up to stay in his comfort zone and not progress as a player. Frankly it took until he was basically not at AFL standard before things changed, as the above article alluded to.

LEADERBOARD

84 Clayton Oliver (MELB)
72 Andrew Brayshaw (FRE)
72 Touk Miller (GCFC)
68 Lachie Neale (BL)
67 Christian Petracca (MELB)
65 Patrick Cripps (CARL)
63 Jeremy Cameron (GEEL)
62 Connor Rozee (PORT)

He is an astonishing talent. Appears to finally be injury free and comfortable in his midfield role, while also impacting the scoreboard.

For the first half on Saturday night he looked like he was playing a different game to everyone else.

Waiting for him to realise he can just pluck the ball from the ball up burn everyone off with his pace and ping the goal from 60m out. When he does this he's reached full self actualization. It's soon.

Sounds about right, I know from experience’bone bruising’ is a campaigner of a thing then one morning you wake up one morning and it’s gone.

Best thing he has taken out of his game which has made him more of a respected player is the throwing the head back complaining no free kick at any opportunity jack riewoldt style. Instead he is putting his head over it and winning the hard balls, those frees come naturally when you do that. Amazing

Things I wish Wingard learnt

King just saying what most of us should be thinking.

The first month of the season was hugely disappointing for a myriad of different reasons - Rozee's form being one of them. Many were questioning when we were going to see proper midfield minutes at all, let alone when we were going to see what had made him the best 16yo in the country 6 years ago. Was pick 5 a total bust?

His shift into the midfield has been a major highlight of season 2022, and his past 4 matches have been mind-blowingly good. Now it's the next part of the challenge - Melbourne and Geelong. Step on up, Connor.

Brilliant! That's the sort of heat our players need to keep them improving. I like it from King. He's spot on as far as I'm concerned, even though Rozee was very good against Freo and hasn't put a foot wrong since the Carlton game.

Now that he has his lethal goal radar back, he is going to be super dangerous to all opposition sides. Let's not forget his outstanding performance in 2021 against Geelong when he kicked 5, in 2020 in the Prelim vs Richmond, and in 2019 against Brisbane at the GABBA when he kicked 5. He has history of performing well in big games against good sides.

The other thing that excites me about Rozee's surging form, is that it should keep Butters that little bit hungrier. Prior to this year, Butters had been anointed the best of our young players based on his preseason training form and match form over the past two years. Rozee has just shot past him again. Internal competition, as well as collaboration, is going to be great for these two.

In media sensation, David King says something negative about Port Adelaide.

Not being good enough to mix it with the best and settling for beating up on the also-rans instead?

That sounds like a perfect description of David King equilibriating as a run-of-the-mill hot-take talking head and below-average game analyst after discovering he wasn't even close to good enough to eke out a career as a junior assistant coach.

Pretty poor reasoning from King. Says Rozee needs to stop polling votes against bottom 8 sides. Then highlights the fact he didn't poll in the first 4 games of the season, 2 of which were against cellar dwellars Hawthorn and Adelaide. Also conveniently leaves out that Rozee polled votes against Fremantle. In fairness it was a whole week ago...

He also conveniently left out that he polled well against Sydney, Gold Coast, bulldogs which are around our mark

He mentions the first 4 games, but forgets to add that Rozee was not playing as a mid then .... since being moved into the middle mid-way through the 5th game = Superstar!

If Rozee had being playing as a midfielder (where he trained all pre-season) from round one, it is just about guaranteed that we would be in the top-8, and Rozee would be up there as a Brownlow favorite.

Well done Stinkley!

Our defence was also turd. Gollant dominated ffs!

Tbh I don’t think Clurey is getting enough credit for our improvement.

I don't mind this type of "questioning" but I would set the test being within 24-36 months not next week

I think we all know Rozee has come on nicely after injury last year and has a heap of development potential in the coming years.............years not days

As I wrote in the MVP votes thread for the GWS game - Rozee has moved up to 8th spot in coaches votes.

Last 6 games Rd 11 v Ess 8, Rd 12 bye, Rd13 v Rich NIL, Rd14 v Syd - 9, Rd15 v Suns - 10, Rd16 v Freo - 3, Rd 17 v GWS - 10, = 40 votes.
