He probably should win the BnF now. Houston has dropped off. Marshall has had as many quiet games, SPP I don't think will poll as well as he should. Burton the only real challenger I reckon.

Agree Macca. Connor’s strong polling in the coaches’ votes should also be a sign that he will poll strongly in the BnF.

On Marshall, what I like is that even his quiet games are now competitive 2 goal outings, and typically on the back of a lack of support from our other forwards. The last two weeks haven’t been Todd’s best but neither were poor games either. Credit to him that he’s lifted the bar to that extent.

I’ll take a quiet 2 goal game any day

33 & 1. This bloke just keeps getting better every week. It’s a shame he has a millstone in Hinkley around his neck.

unfortunately soon clubs will realise we've got bugger all else happening and go the hard tag.

im not sure connor is at the level to still dominate through a hard tag yet

desperately need butters to get back to the level he's capable of and for ollie to do something

I think Rozee is too quick for a hard tag, half of the reason he's able to be so damaging is that opposition midfielders literally can't touch him in congestion

Opposition teams are going to work him over very soon which our coaching team should be planning for as to which team mate we can utilise for similar effect who'll be getting less attention as a result....someone like Butters comes to mind.
The attention on Rozee won't be anything illegal, tactics like lingering tackles by one to two players, blocks and minor checks off the ball, tactics to stop his momentum and wear him down.

That's been going on since he debuted. He is probably getting used to the treatment and learning how to deal with it, hence his improvement.

Same with Butters and Duursma, have been targeted since day one.

No surprise that all three have experienced a number of injuries given their illegal treatment which is almost never penalised by umpires.

Yes I agree. He is hardening up. I remember a few games back he was given a hard tag, and was getting hammered in heavy tackles, yet he found a way to still be one of the best on ground.

Great players do that!

we haven’t yet really had both rozee and butters firing at the same time. It’s been one or the other since day 1.

Our midfield could be scary good if we can.

This off-season has to be focused on developing butters body. He’s just too small for the crash and bash insane game he plays. A few extra kgs and more core strength will help protect him a bit more imo.

It's only been the last 10 or so games that's he's played entirely in the midfield.
I'm not doubting Rozee's ability to beat a tag as he has all the attributes outside of physical size which will come.
What I do think will happen though as he'll be assigned a hard tag and opposition teams will take a 'team mindset' to wear him down.
When a whole midfield group takes that mindset of gang tackles, resting their weight on him when tackled, bumping, nudging and or sh#t stirring whenever there is a stoppage, boundary throw in, that's when Hinkley and the midfield need to be smart enough to:

1) Provide blocks, checking to Rozee's tagger.
2) Give as good as we get from the opposition.
3) Utilise the player that isn’t getting the attention (Butters, Boak) so that the focus will have to shift to one of them which will free up Rozee again.

This is what concerns me regarding a Hinkley coached side. The amount of young players that have break out years before getting additional focus for which they then stagnate happens consistently.
Port should be incorporating training, match simulation drills NOW to co-ordinate a midfield mindset of working in unison to free up our best player (Rozee) or to utilise our free player (Butters, Boak).

Just 6 months ago we were wondering where our next prime mover mid was coming from, what a glow up! Incredible in traffic and for someone who was probably considered a bit flaky, his consistency of effort and ability to stay composed while receiving some attention from the opposition is outstanding.

Connor, like Marshall, hasn't just became a good player that has exploded out of the blocks.

There's an element of leadership about their game that is so promising. They accept the responsibility of putting the team on their back and dragging it back in to a game. Taking it forward to a winning position.

It may not always come off, but you take that, because the attitude and effort means more than an occasional skill error or bad decision.

True, if Rozee is our only midfield star then yes, we are in trouble. But as mentioned, once Butters hits his straps, the two of them along with Ollie's strength, Drew's defensive work, etc, will make it hard for oppo sides. Add in a fast-improving Bergman, and the yet to be unleashed Sinn, if they become too Rozee-focused, then it allows the others to get off the leash.

Connor was our leading goalkicker and 2nd in the NAB rising star in his first season.

Since then, he has either been playing injured, or in that hole of a high half forward position that coaches persist with, or both until he was moved somewhere where he had more control over his involvement in the game.

Can't compare with Marshall's development at all.

A shout out to Rozee just because he shut up David "I want to see him do it against the best" King.

The stats sum it up. Was quieter against Geelong admittedly but still worked hard in a game where the most disposals for us was 25 (Amon).

Anyway, any opportunity to stick it up that campaigner King.
