Player Watch Pick #56 (2021) - Dante Visentini

Already looks a really good size from those images

Really want that extra 5 kilos on him and he needs to dominate sanfl Rucks.

A couple of games this year is good but without that 5 kilos and without the experience he will get playing the main role in the sanfl this year we may as well play Teakle rather than burn Dante.

20 year old Rucks don't carry afl sides.

All this just makes you realise how far off a flag we are, you don't win flags with baby ruckmen & part timers.

1. He isn’t a baby ruckman, he is The Answer

2. What is Rhys Stanley to you if he isn’t the definition of a part timer?

My point is, you don’t need anywhere near an All Australian ruckman to win a flag. It can be done with a ‘role-player’ level dude and getting Dante in soon increases his chances of reaching that level at a time conducive with that of of our list’s peak in terms of age.

Stanley is a 200cm 102kg guy who’s spent the last decade in ruck. Im not sure why you’re Redding to him as a “part-timer”

Is he an average ruck? Yeah sure.

But he’s a seasoned average ruck, backed up by some of the best backup rucks in the league, feeding one of the more senior and better midfields mostly playing at home every week to umps that love them.

Yeah you’re can win with a “role player” ruck.. if the role player is seasoned and everywhere else on the field is that much better than your opponents.

* this is no argument against getting games into Dante, just against some of your points referring to Stanley.

Stanley is where he is cause of years of development. Getting games into Dante (or any other ruck worth our time) is a good thing for when we are ready

Maybe not but if the other side has an AA ruckman you are pushing the proverbial uphill. It isn't just the tap ruckwork but the telling marks and possessions these guys get around the ground that really hurts. In round 4 against us last year Melbourne's Max Gawn and Luke Jackson had 39 possessions and 17 marks between them on top of 41 hit outs, they also kicked a goal each. That sort of effort around the ground counts. Port didn't kick a goal in the first half and we had one up until three quarter time.

It not just Port games that a top ruck combination makes a difference. In last year's Grand final Biclavs and Stanley had 39 possessions and 42 hit outs between them with Biclavs doing most of the ruckwork. Sydney's Tom Hickey backed up by a 6 gamer in Hayden McLean had had 17 possessions and 24 hitouts. That is almost like giving the opposition an extra midfielder.

Notice anything about Melbourne and Geelong?- that's right they both have two ruckmen with the ability to get the bloody ball around the ground, they take defensive marks and kick the occasional goal in addition to winning the hit outs.

We are ****ing light years behind the top sides in our ruck strength and make no mistake - it counts.

None of this is meant to be an argument against giving Dante or Hayes a go but if we do I would like to think we could work two genuine ruckmen into the equation. Putting Dante or whoever alone and up against the likes of a Gawn/Jackson or Biclavs/Stanley combination is asking for trouble.

I do think he should come in against Melbourne. We're probably ****ed anyway, we definitely need a 2nd ruck, and he's the best of the bunch as far as pushing up forward.

Bassett on Dante Visentini’s growth
Dante's in the mix of ruckmen we can pick, certainly we love his attitude, he’s a very physical ruckman. He's only a second year player and he’s still learning his craft so to play him against Gawn and Grundy is probably not the one you necessarily want first up in your AFL career as a ruckman, but we love what Dante’s doing and how he's learning and I imagine he'll get a chance at some stage soon.”

Doesn’t bode well for Hayes

If we didn’t already know that

I'm of the opinion Visentini could be the most promising ruckman the club has had since the heady days of Primus, Lade and Brogan, but I can't see the club even contemplating giving him a gig against Gawn and Grundy as that could definitely have the potential to destroy his confidence and set him back a long way.

I'm not totally against him being given a taste of the big time in a game later in the season against weaker oppo than Melbourne though.

not sure Stanley is a part timer, he's been playing there for years and is an athletic experienced and hardened ruckman, no superstar but not a part timer either.

Im all for playing visentini along with lycett and bin the teakle experiment.

That's a pretty big call and I hope you are right.

Moved my post on the norwood game to the game day thread as I stuffed up, this is Dante's thread.

However, I liked Visentini's game. He gave some big efforts. He is competitive and if they aren't going to give Sam Hayes a couple games as finals insurance if Lycett gets injured or needs a rest, I'd be happy to give Dante a game or two as finals insurance also. I reckon he will give us more in the ruck than Teakle did and we might as well find out what he can or can't deliver around the ground. Can't put my finger exactly on it, but he has something that says he is going to make it - but I'm not saying he is going to be a dominate AFL ruck.
