Hi Maggie5 just finished watching the replay on Fox.

The midget......sorry Blair did set up a few goals. Bravo Blairy.

By the way that bum fluff on your chin has to go Crisp........ Vicky Park get onto it please!
Your friend Daics did some clever things to.
I liked what he did for DG's last goal. Will be a very clever player.
Apple doesn't fall far from the tree.

He looks like a natural footballer.......with a football brain......something we lack in our team.

Couldn't agree more; and I would add that the game doesn't call for more than occasional brilliance -- most of the time it just calls for competence, moving the ball from A to B in the right way at the right time, applying the right defensive move, etc. The competent provides a foundation for the brilliant, which by definition is rare.
Welcome aboard. Terrific avatar!

I think that extrapolates out to 16-17 possessions per 100% game time. Not that he'd get 100% but at least it's something to work with. His 16 possessions could be damaging.

His 1st hitouts at that level the possessions don't really matter, it's more about the way he moved and that he looked at home. Intensity goes up again at H&A proper but hard to ask for more, especially given all the pre-draft profiles.

Makes me laugh how many threads get hijacked by debate on the relative merits of Blair. He's more divisive that Kim Jong Il, Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump put together, poor bugger.

To assist with the debate, would it be useful to maybe do a statistical comparison with players in like roles at other clubs who have proven successful eg Puopolo, Daniel (more likely the former) in order to give the discussion a more factual element and move it beyond just his height, relationship with Buckley, peoples' need for new toys etc.

For the record I'm super excited about the potential emergence of Daicos, Brown and God forbid, Broomhead. But I also think the journeyman/warrior/role player is an important player in a side because he forces those younger more talented guys to reach certain level of consistency and professionalism to take the spot off him. For this reason we should be a little more grateful for the Blairs on the list, as bland and unexciting as they are. They set a valuable default standard. Just saying.

It's all been done before.

Yes just look at the small forwards that played for the Essendon.

Blair played mainly through the midfield.

But for the record...

Colyer 9 possessions, Fantasia 12, Green 11, Mc-T 8, Howlett 8 v Blair 17

I'm not knocking I just think what he did is the expectation for most AFL players. I will give him credit for the White goal he thought his way through that brilliantly, was being chased and could have either panicked and kicked up the line or try to outrun the chasers and have to kick running at full pace under pressure but instead he held it up allowed the defenders to pass him steadied and kicked it to White's advantage. I'm not saying he played poorly, but I don't think he starred either. He played his role and usually did the right thing. The only issue I have with Blair is he doesn't kick enough goals and doesn't have enough of those moments like setting up White's goal.

But what difference does it make if Blair kicks the goals or he sets up others as long as we get the goal and we win?

In actual fact however, ignoring the third quarter and extrapolating from the last quarter only eliminates perspective. It's like looking at a minute of the game in which he gained a possession, then saying the game was 100 minutes long, so if he did that every minute he'd get 100 possessions.

The quarter of no possessions puts his last quarter in perspective.

Exactly, could just as easily cherry pick the 3rd and extrapolate and he gets 0 possessions for the game.

Neither would tell the actual story.

Tom Phillips - Excellent game. Looks like a best 22 player going off that game. Needs to back it up with another strong game in preseason game 2 and he can establish himself as a wing/hf.

De Goey - Much better and showed some power at stoppages winning meaningful contested possessions. Even hit the scoreboard for a couple of goals when around the ball. Needs to build upon this game as his progress is vital for Collingwood's relevance. If he keeps playing through the midfield, rewards will come and we'll see the gains from him.

Crisp - Also very good through the midfield and showed he needs more minutes around the ball.

Mason Cox - Liked him again. Tap work good. v weak Essendon ruckman outmuscled them. Took a strong mark. Enough signs. Worth persisting with and work pumping AFL games into.

Hoskin-Elliott - A good game. Had his moments where he had an impact which is what you look for. Needs to keep bringing that standard or better to become a regular. If he can, welcome addition.

Dunn - Solid ball use makes him a welcome addition down back. His 1v1 strength and intercept marking will show up more in other games. The kickout turnover for a Tipungwuti goal was poor but that's the exception rather than what you normally see from him.

Scharenberg - solid in the minutes he was out there and can step into the back half if we see a position available for him.

Moore was poor again as he was in the intra-club which was disappointing. It doesn't look like this will be a breakout year by any stretch for Moore and expectations need to be tempered until he finds some form.

Mayne quiet but played his role and we'll see more of that through the year other than the odd game where he may kick 3-4 goals if we're really on top in a big way through the midfield.

The usage of Keeffe through the ruck and up forward is career suicide. Appalling as a forward. Only passable through the ruck. Mason Cox would be my first choice for that relieving ruck position. Darcy Moore while with no other genuine quality key forward needs to remain forward is also a better alternative for this role. Jesse White while not in my best 22 also clearly better in this role as a more versatile type around the ground and also better up forward.
Keeffe as a key defender still has a potential AFL future given what he did in the past as an intercepter, reliable kick and with that length has even at stages proven an effective shutdown key defender.
I'll be rattling on about this from round 1-23 if he remains in this role. It's the worst positional utilisation squad-wide.

Colyer 9 possessions, Fantasia 12, Green 11, Mc-T 8, Howlett 8 v Blair 17
Goals Coyler 2, Fantasia 4, Green 2 Mc-T 1, Howlett 1 (or though don't think he counts as a small forward nor do I rate him) v Blair 0

But what difference does it make if Blair kicks the goals or he sets up others as long as we get the goal and we win?

That comment was more on how I find Blair in general not just that game but really the only goal he set up was the Jesse White goal he was just involved in the passage of play in the others.

Save your arguments for those who truly despise Blair. I see him as a handy player who can play role without starring and always have a go.

Hey mike123 have watched Cloke today?
No and I don't plan to. He looks disgusting in those colours the less I see him in those the better. I can't stand when pictures of him in that jumper are posted on here and I can't stand when I see him in articles on AFL.com. I hope his goes alright but I won't be paying close attention.

Fair enough

Joel Sellwood gets my vote for most headbuttable
Eh I don't really care about him any more, I'm more annoyed at the tacklers who keep falling for it.

I dont normally say much about opposition players. But Goddard, geez, what an angry man. He's been like that since the 2010 GF loss, and I doubt if he's smiled since. I understand he was disappointed with the loss - join the club - but to maintain that rage for so long. Not helped of course by joining Essendon on the eve of their Great Downfall. Maybe he's justified in being angry...

If they win the flag this year though..........."they'll make a movie about us".

When he kicked that goal late in the 4th of the grand final he believed in his heart of hearts he had won them the flag, that's why it hurts him so much

Fair enough, he was a great footballer in that period. I admire that.

But on Thursday night, the grumpy Goddard was back. (Loved the way Cox took that mark and then fell on top of him).
