I'm more in favour of having two first rounders; hedging your bets on one player can be risky. I know it's top heavy talent, but don't underestimate those who go later in the second round.

Ideally, (conceding we've lost Polec), Lycett, Pick 10, (possibly) 11, 23 and 30 really give us some leverage for depth and future.

Maybe we grab Mayes, but i'm not really up for packaging picks to jump a couple spots higher.

I do expect the crows to use their leverage to get onto Lukousious or Rankine though.

I hope we can be smart in this draft!

I was thinking the same. Posters complaining that we are tardy or dumb and have missed the boat have nfi.
Of course our club is considering all options behind the scenes.
Plus trading is a bit like a game of poker. You don’t show your hand.

Not really. Poker is turn based. Trading is asynchronous - so you can have the best strategy in the world but if you take too long to execute it, someone can beat you to the punch.

The way I feel about our trade approach over the years, it’s more likely we are holding 30 in case we have to give it to north.

Edit: I’ve never been concerned about our handling of free agency- we seem to do that well .... buts that’s more about convincing players to come and setting the contract value right. Making smart trade decisions that don’t see us come out either selling too high, or buying too high is another thing.

Haha, if that's underperforming his potential, I'd love to see him hit peak form.

His raw stats don’t need to improve as much as his efforts that can turn games. Peak Chad probably would have dragged us into finals contention, shit game plan and all.

No idea how we're going to get that done. We need a Dom Tyson + pick 9 for pick 2 scenario.

Maybe SPP, pick 10 & 11 for Picks 2 and 3?

While we're chewing on this, here's a stat.

FOUR (4) players across the entire AFL averaged 20 & 1 in both seasons 2017 and 2018:

• Patrick Dangerfield
• Dustin Martin
• Dayne Zorko
• Chad Wingard

That's 2017-18, when he's apparently been an abominable no-man unworthy of a supermegahyperdeal.

Be sure to look shocked if he goes somewhere where his talents are fully appreciated and exploited and he ends up winning a Brownlow.

This is a classic case of where stats are meaningless without context.

Martin and Dangerfield spend the majority of their time in the midfield, where they star, and rest forward to kick goals. They are also super damaging players when playing both positions. People are acutely aware of where they are on the ground at all times because their possessions are generally damaging ones if they get off the chain.

Wingard plays either full time mid or full time forward - and his possession ratio is 12 kicks to 9 handballs.

If Wingard was listed as a midfielder his stats would be mediocre. He’s actually not that great. Let’s put it this way: in 8 games, he scored under 10 ranking points this year.

Dangerfield recorded only 2 games under 10. Zorko 6. Martin 3.

You could favourably compare him to Zorko at the moment because of his lack of application. He should be being compared to Martin and Dangerfield. And that’s the whole problem. He thinks he’s worth Martin/Dangerfield money when he’s really worth Zorko money. And Zorko signed a four year extension for $2m in 2016.

So yeah, he’s not worth a supermegahyperdeal.

Saw talk of Frampton in this thread a few pages back, who I happen to have heard similar things about.

There is a presence in the leadership group that reckons Billy lacks professionalism and commitment off the field and that he wasn't displaying the right attitude this year, hence why he only got a game so late in the season. Whilst it would definitely disappoint me since after getting Lycett we finally have some decent depth in the talls department, I wouldn't be surprised at all if the club pushed for a trade.

Ken on public record “Pick 10 for Polec will suffice”

You have misplaced faith. It’s cute.
It’s not really misplaced faith. I just don’t pretend to be in the know about what is going on in the negotiation rooms and I expect any club to be looking at all options. Cripps is well experienced.

Can I get a list of our regular forwards and how many times they each scored over 10 points in 2018?

His time playing forward in the most defensively minded team in the league in 2018 killed his trade value (another one of many great reasons not to trade Wingard in this offseason). He was our best midfielder when playing there full time.

For what it’s worth, and these aren’t necessarily related, Frampton’s brother fell of the draft radar last year due to a lack professionalism. He was probably tracking toward a late or rookie pick at times last season.

Let it go man. He played forward because he rocked up to preseason unfit. It was no one’s fault but his own, which is why his view on his worth is delusional. He’s asking for money based on the player he could be, not the player he is. And he’ll never be the player he could be unless he applies a more stringent standard to his football.

I’m kind of hoping the fact that no one is offering the coin he reckons he’s worth is a wake up call and he does become a premier mid.

P.S Robbie Gray had 7 games under 10 points, and not once did he play as a full time mid like Wingard.

Losing Wingard is a disaster. It absolutely is.

Shouldn’t be losing players like that - is what it seems like. I’m sure there are issues but seems like they are focussed on the negatives not positives he can bring - which is a very human thing to do. No doubt he has pissed someone off.
