So I’ve had about ten replies to my tariff questions now and all are very critical of the plan, thinking it will raise prices.

The right likes to bang on about echo chambers and fake news so you’ve still got an opportunity here to prove those exist. All you need to do is answer the simple question:

How will tariffs fix the cost of living crisis?

This is easy.

First, prices will not go up, because, if they did, that would make Trump look bad, so that cannot happen.
Second, The Chinese will pay the tariffs, for, reasons.
Third, those tens of thousands of modern efficient equipped factories the US has sitting around idle, will spring into action, to replace the product imported from overseas.
Fourth, after Trump has deported all the cheap labour, honest god fearing Americans will flood those factories, keen to work all those minimum wage jobs to produce the goods that all those Chinese workers used to make, for $20 a day.

All those Maga will go home at the end of every minimum wage drudgery shift, crying tears of joy that they have been able to help fulfil Trumps American dream, and spend their hard earned on high quality, Chinese made, Trump merchandise.

Its a vision that makes me a bit teary myself if Im honest.

President of Mexico shows how much fitter to govern than Trump she is. I especially like the bolded section, but it was hard to leave any part out, sorry if it's too long.

“Dear President-elect Donald Trump,I am writing to you regarding your statement on Monday, November 25, concerning migration, fentanyl trafficking, and tariffs.

You may not be aware that Mexico has developed a comprehensive policy to assist migrants from different parts of the world who cross our territory en route to the southern border of the United States. As a result, and according to data from your country’s Customs and Border Protection (CBP), encounters at the Mexico–United States border have decreased by 75% between December 2023 and November 2024. Moreover, half of those who arrive do so through a legally scheduled appointment under the United States’ CBP One program. For these reasons, migrant caravans no longer arrive at the border.

Even so, it is clear that we must work together to create a new labor mobility model that is necessary for your country, as well as address the root causes that compel families to leave their homes out of necessity. If even a small percentage of what the United States allocates to war were instead dedicated to building peace and fostering development, it would address the underlying causes of human mobility.

On another note, and for humanitarian reasons, Mexico has consistently expressed its willingness to help prevent the fentanyl epidemic in the United States from continuing. This is, after all, a public health and consumption problem within your society. So far this year, Mexican armed forces and prosecutors have seized tons of various types of drugs, 10,340 firearms, and have detained 15,640 individuals for violence related to drug trafficking.

Furthermore, the Mexican Congress is in the process of approving a constitutional reform to classify the production, distribution, and commercialization of fentanyl and other synthetic drugs as a serious crime without bail. However, it is publicly known that the chemical precursors used to produce this and other synthetic drugs are illegally entering Canada, the United States, and Mexico from Asian countries. This underscores the urgent need for international collaboration. You must also be aware of the illegal trafficking of firearms into my country from the United States.

Seventy percent of the illegal weapons seized from criminals in Mexico come from your country. We do not produce these weapons, nor do we consume synthetic drugs. Tragically, it is in our country that lives are lost to the violence resulting from meeting the drug demand in yours.

President Trump, migration and drug consumption in the United States cannot be addressed through threats or tariffs. What is needed is cooperation and mutual understanding to tackle these significant challenges. For every tariff, there will be a response in kind, until we put at risk our shared enterprises. Yes, shared. For instance, among Mexico’s main exporters to the United States are General Motors, Stellantis, and Ford Motor Company, which arrived in Mexico 80 years ago. Why impose a tariff that would jeopardize them? Such a measure would be unacceptable and would lead to inflation and job losses in both the United States and Mexico.

I am convinced that North America’s economic strength lies in maintaining our trade partnership. This allows us to remain competitive against other economic blocs. For this reason, I believe that dialogue is the best path to understanding, peace, and prosperity for our nations. I hope our teams can meet soon to continue building joint solutions.”

Sending a letter to Donald that is more than one paragraph is destined for failure.

These are the sorts of things that news organisations should be reporting on. Instead it's all "Trump said ..."

But - I doubt that nobody in Mexico consumes synthetic drugs.

The Australian dollar slid to its lowest level in seven months while billions of dollars were wiped from the ASX after Trump used Truth Social to declare he would sign an executive order on his first day back in office imposing a 25 per cent tariff on Canada and Mexico and a separate 10 per cent tariff on imports from China.

the age

prices , exchange rate , stock market , nothing to worry about if you import goods or rely on stock market for dividends for your super and that is tariffs not related to Australia

We just did this over on the conspiracy board with one of our esteemed MAGA faithful, EasternTiger.

When confronted with the mechanics of how tariffs actually work over about 4 posts he basically went from "tariffs are great and will fix everything" to "whatever, yeah it'll be more expensive but rich people won't care so I don't either".

Oh, and that people will be happy to pay more anyway. To "pay down the debt".

I am not making this up :tearsofjoy:

It is just staggering how stupid they can be, Mexico, China and Canada will just do the same for USA, so not only will if stuff up importers, it will stuff exports.

Trump team trying to claim credit for ceasefire

US president-elect Donald Trump's incoming White House team is trying to claim the credit for brokering the ceasefire deal between Israel and Hezbollah.

“Everyone is coming to the table because of President Trump,” Republican Florida representative Mike Waltz, who is Trump’s choice for national security adviser, said in a post on X shortly before the Israel cabinet signed off on the agreement.

“His resounding victory sent a clear message to the rest of the world that chaos won’t be tolerated. I’m glad to see concrete steps towards de-escalation in the Middle East.”

As we told you earlier, the outgoing Biden administration briefed Trump's national security team on the ceasefire agreement.

Republican senator Lindsey Graham, who is a Trump supporter in the US government, provided more of a nod to the Biden administration.

“I appreciate the hard work of the Biden Administration, supported by President Trump, to make this ceasefire a reality,” he said in a statement.

Hold on. So Biden Admin is to blame for the recent attacks but Trump is the hero for the ceasefire when he’s not even in office yet. The mental gymnastics is crazy.

It would be precisely the right time to tax US Media companies like Meta, Google and X for the profits they make overseas. Australia should be loading up on that. Meta, Google and X are making out like bandits how low their overseas tax rates are.

Let's see how much Musk likes tariffs when they are placed on his own advertising and car revenues.

Hope America doesnt get a pandemic

President-elect Donald J. Trump said on Tuesday evening that he had selected Dr. Jay Bhattacharya, a Stanford physician and economist whose authorship of an anti-lockdown treatise during the coronavirus pandemic made him a central figure in a bitter public health debate, to be the director of the National Institutes of Health.
“Together, Jay and RFK Jr. will restore the NIH to a Gold Standard of Medical Research as they examine the underlying causes of, and solutions to, America’s biggest health challenges, including our Crisis of Chronic Illness and Disease,” Mr. Trump wrote on social media, referring to Robert F. Kennedy Jr., his choice to lead the N.I.H.’s parent agency, the Department of Health and Human Services.

Doesnt want fbi to check out dodgy choices or have official emails yet so there is history of their plans before innaguaration , quite ironic that

President-elect Donald J. Trump’s team has signed a transition agreement with the White House that will allow them to begin formal briefings with outgoing staff members in agencies across the government, Mr. Trump’s chief of staff said on Tuesday evening.
But Mr. Trump’s team has so far refused to sign an agreement with the Justice Department to allow the F.B.I. to do security clearances for transition members. Without that, Biden administration officials will be unable to share classified information with many of Mr. Trump’s transition aides.
The Trump team is also refusing to sign an agreement with the General Services Administration that usually provides secure office space, government email accounts and other support. White House officials said that would make sharing information with Mr. Trump’s officials more difficult over the next two months.
