Charlie Lewis in Crikey:

"The question remains — what will this ugly spectacle mean in concrete terms? A great deal of horror in the areas of reproductive rights, the environment and the promised mass deportations seems more or less assured.

Progressives pointing out that, say, Trump cannot simply override the US Constitution via decree, as he plans to do on day one by attempting to revoke the birthright citizenship of the children of undocumented immigrants, are missing the point. The history of the US presidency is full of figures who subverted the constitution and America’s status as a democracy, including many of the most celebrated holders of the office. (My italics)

The checks on presidential power are mostly political conventions. The question is not what Trump — who for now has the House, the Senate, and the courts — is allowed to do in his role. Whether it’s in his official capacity, or the general hum of chaos he is able to foment, the question is what he is able to get away with. The fact that we are here, in 2025, discussing the first day of his second term, tells us something about just how much that might be."
It's a matter of time before he starts Kent Stating people and we'll see how keen Americans are on having the government point actual guns at them then.

Anyone checked the price of eggs in the last 24 hrs, should be down to near zero now with him signing all those executive orders

There was that order he signed that said departments need to bring inflation down, so he's done his part. He had the concepts of a plan.

Now it's their fault if it doesn't happen.

Australians cheerleading for Biden always amazed me.
It amazes me that you think anyone cheerleaded for Biden. No-one thinks he was a great option, just a better one than Trump.

Finally an infrastructure announcement after all these years!

Oh... it's AI

US President Donald Trump has announced "the largest AI infrastructure project in history".

Mr Trump was joined by representatives from the companies Oracle, Softbank and OpenAI.

Me too. No-one was.

Most people recognised him merely as a mostly sensible, experienced, non-deranged option. Why anyone would “cheerlead” that is beyond me.

Perhaps they didn’t.

The pro-Trump cohort view it as a team sport, you either deeply support one or the other. There's no alternative.

This is why they always frame it as 'owning the left' despite the vast majority of policies of 'the left' actually being likely to benefit them. It's just about cheering for a team and punching down.

Sadly, yes.
