Researchers at the CSIRO have been sent a Trump administration survey demanding they answer questions on diversity, gender ideology and whether they are studying “climate justice”, as the Australian government scrambles to respond to US attacks on scientific funding.

Two researchers working on American-funded projects have received the 36-point survey from the US government, this masthead can reveal, joining those at seven Australian universities sent the probing questionnaire.

The fact that a journalist was inadvertently added to the chat group is almost the least serious concern.

Just as (or more) importantly they should be addressing

a) why they were using Signal to exchange such info
- not secure
-doesn’t create permanent record

b) why were such detailed operational matters being shared amongst such a large group of (authorised) people on any channel. Surely military operational matters - before they were executed - should be on a need to know basis only?

c) Why didn’t anyone notice who else was in the chat group. Working in an environment where we just used email (and hacking risks weren’t top of mind) I would always look carefully at who had been copied in on any email to ensure commercially confidential information wasn’t being inappropriately distributed (including people carelessly adding new addressees when responding to a long chain of emails without considering what info was on earlier emails in a chain).

It’s all been deflection and blame from the senior people who all shoul have know better.
