It's just dumb. Two best players at the most defining time period in the game. Both off. What did the coaching box think would happen?

Can understand Bont being rotated, but English needed to stay out there, he went off after Port's first goal in Q4 and was missing when they kicked the second.

English went off at Q4 10:25 and came back on at Q4 15:50.

Bontempelli went off at Q4 13:30 and came back on at Q4 20:08.

Port Adelaide kicked goals at…

Q4 10:03
Q4 12:57
Q4 16:11
Q4 25:33

Thoughts on Macrae and Treloar?

I feel like Macrae has been waning for almost 12 months. I'm starting to think he might be declining early. He was never pacy, but he is definitely getting slower, and defending with less power than he used to. I suspect that is WHY he is being eased out of the engine room this year, rather than BECAUSE he is being eased out of the engine room. He seemed particularly ineffective tonight, although his player rating wasn't bad, so maybe my eye test wasn't very accurate.

Treloar got a huge amount of ball. He was in everything and tried very hard. But he was particular fumbly and panicky, which made his impact on the game significantly less than it could have or should have been. It was a shame - if he had handled the ball better in the wet it could have been one of his best ever games, and might have single-handedly won it for us.

We got shafted - would hope if they continue this NRL LITE idea in Adelaide, we don't draw a home side again
Shafted? The alternative is returning to Adelaide again, possibly even three times in total to play the SA teams.

We obviously have all kinds of issues - your inside 50 stats are very revealing, Oliver. But don't go past our 4th quarter pressure gauge for why we lost. 171 is pathetic in the wet.

I will say it again it’s our mature age recruits that are killing us

Hannan 29yld Scott 28yld Lobb 30yld Bruce 31yld it’s like we play 4 short every week because they don’t/can’t compete and love falling over

Its not their fault it’s list management who put them on the list then you can add McComb 27yld OBrein 29yld Baker 25yld then add Duryea 32yld McLean 27yld are cooked thats why we have the 2nd oldest list and we are where we are and not coming back anytime soon

Your point is well made, and I completely agree. But your user name to content irony is very rich.

Our interstate record is also starting to become a worry, we've now lost 4 of our 5 with our only win coming against Hawthorn...

L vs. Fremantle (1EF 2022)
W vs. Hawthorn (R23 2022)
L vs. Sydney (R17 2022)
L vs. Brisbane (R16 2022)

We've also lost 7 of our past 11 outside Melbourne, with wins only against Hawthorn, Gold Coast, GWS and a severely undermanned West Coat...

Why was Bont not in the middle for the last 3 centre bounces, talking about costing ya self the game absolutely stupid decision, lost this by stupid decisions like that!!
Also, English not rucking. Lobb was rucking at the time Marshall kicked those 2 goals. When the games on the line you have to have your best in the middle.

Why are people having a go at TOB? He was fine tonight

Right up until his defensive inability was exposed by Marshall and effectively ended our chance at winning. Allowed Port to get some belief. If Bruce stayed on the park Marshall doesn't mark the first one he got in the last

Tobes is done too heavy and his pace is gone after the 2 knees. Gave away free in the last due to panicking that he was about too be blitzed for speed

Why did we go after Lobb then when we have so many in that bracket

Perhaps we have been seduced by Geelong's success with topping up an ageing list? But they are certainly an outlier.

My understanding of Bevo is that he is philosophically opposed to a rebuild through the draft, and that we should be seriously competing for the premiership in every season. That sounds enticing, but I fear that it is contributing to the limbo we currently find ourselves in. As others have noted, we have stockpiled a fair bit of deadwood in the 27+ age bracket, and Bevo's fingerprints are all over that. IMO, we need to emancipate our list manager from Bevo's ideological bias so that we can hit the draft hard for a couple of years. I would rather endure a couple of years of development than an indeterminate amount of time in football purgatory, which is where we seem to be residing at the moment.

I am a Bailey Williams fan but his lack of progression in the last 12 months or so is concerning. He is an experienced player now and should be exerting more influence on games and , I don’t know, winning his position but it seems the best outcome is that “ he breaks even with his opponent “. He is playing well enough to hold his position but is not a player who will win games for us. Like a lot of team mates.

This is now 5 games with absolutely no fluidity between our midfield and forward lines. We keep waiting for it to turn but there’s enough of a sample that it won’t.

Weightman returned and starred with 4 goals but we still kicked a terrible score. We’re going to lose significantly more games than we win on current trajectory. 4 out of 5 games we’ve kicked 10 goals or less. Pretty deplorable.

We have no excitement with our ball movement at all. Just a boring team to watch.

While we were unlucky with the fixture, the crowd had next to no influence on the match. Our issues of bombing it inside 50 don't just magically go away playing a Victorian side, nor does our horrific tackling pressure. We normally are a very good wet weather footy team but we did not adjust at all to the conditions tonight.
We really have become a poor pressure side, Williams is a case study for that,

he just guards space, often doesnt go hard enough to the contest, often caught "in between" contests

As always…

those pressure stats sum up what i saw with my eyes,

average in Q1 and dropped off badly in Q4, these are the quarters youd expect max effort in a milestone game

How frustrating was Marra’s set shot that Alir touched, how do we not have someone there to block. They took it down their end and blocked Jones on the line for a goal..
Lobb was there, at least physically - no idea where he was mentally. Just stood off to the side and let Allir have an unimpeded run at it.

It's just dumb. Two best players at the most defining time period in the game. Both off. What did the coaching box think would happen?

And Bevo references several times in the press conference that the game was lost in the last when they dug deep and got on top in the midfield. Said with a level of surprise on his part.

Just some random thoughts on the game.
  • I completely accept that Bev knows more about football than me. But what is it he sees in Hannan that I miss completely? Every game Hannan plays as I expect him to. That can’t be what Bev wants.
  • TOB got exposed when having to play as a KPD when Bruce got injured. He did ok as the third tall defender. Give Buku a chance to show if he can do firstly the third tall job and maybe hold his own when needed as a KPD.
  • I fear injury has caught up with McLean. But if he is on 98 games we need to get him to 100. With our good fortune with father sons it is worth a punt. I am serious about this.
  • we need to trial Buku, Cleary and McNeil. We need to see if we can improve the performance of the team and it’s not happening by sticking with our bottom three or four. We know what they give us and it’s not good enough
Hannan is probably the dumbest footballer ive ever seen.

has no idea about body positioning, when to attack and when to just halve a contest, poor spatial awareness.

case in point, 3 seconds to go and defending grimly from repeat PA inside 50s, he takes possession near the centre, gives a sideways mongrel no look handball, almost gifts them a final shot on goal in 3 seconds, amazing!

I’m pretty shocked at how bad a mark he is. I’m sure he was clunking them whenever he played us.

He was getting those marks on thlead against us. We aren't playing to his strength and putting it out in front of him too run onto

We much prefer to bomb it on top of his head which gives the defender time to get across and spoil
